Abstract Recently, large progress was made in the development towards low-cost PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) for industrial and educational applications. This paper presents the use of two low-cost action cameras for stereoscopic planar PIV. A continuous wave laser or alternatively an LED was used for illumination and pulsed by a frequency generator. A slight detuning of the light pulsation and camera frame rate minimizes systematic errors by the rolling shutter effect and allows for the synchronization of both cameras by postprocessing without the need of hardware synchronization. The setup was successfully qualified on a rotating particle pattern in a planar and stereoscopic configuration as well as on the jet of an aquarium pump. Since action cameras are intended to be used at outdoor activities, they are small, very robust and work autarkic. In conjunction with the synchronization and image pre-processing scheme presented herein, those cameras enable stereoscopic PIV in harsh environments and even on moving experiments. A questionnaire was sent by mail to 4400 radiologists (i.e. to at least 1000 radiological institutions). The response rate was about 5%. The results showed that 47% of respondents felt well informed about teleradiology, 49% not enough and 3% not at all. Image and report transfer as well as interfaces to reference databases, educational applications, technical quality surveillance and product support (maintenance) were considered to be increasingly important areas. Smaller institutions (1–3 doctors) judged expert consultation as more important than bigger institutions. Standardization, system stability and data security were demanded as well as guidelines, for example concerning the linking of report and image, correct documentation and required image quality. Technically most demands can be fulfilled today but this technology is not yet commonly included in teleradiology systems.

Now that the microcomputer has gained wide acceptance as a teaching tool, it seems appropriate to review the extent to which phoneticians can make use of the new technology. Educational applications will be our primary interest in this survey. Many of these applications involve phonetics word-processing, and of course this has direct relevance for the current debate in this Journal concerning the possibility of a standard for computerization of the IPA.

PurposeNumerous educational applications (APP) have been developed to assist traditional classroom teaching and student learning. APP quality plays a critical role in influencing students' learning behaviors. However, the role negative mindsets, especially computer anxiety, play in how APP quality affects student engagement remains unknown. To address the relationships among APP quality, computer anxiety and student engagement in an APP-based learning environment, we developed an extended information system (IS) success model that includes interface and instructor quality.Design/methodology/approachTo empirically test the proposed model, we conducted a survey with a sample of 225 university students and examined the hypotheses using the partial least squares (PLS) method.FindingsComputer anxiety was demonstrated to fully mediate the relationships between student engagement and interface quality and service quality and system quality. In addition, the instructor quality acts as a partial mediator of the relationship between computer anxiety and student engagement.Originality/valueThis study reveals the important mediating role of computer anxiety in APP-assisted learning and the special status of instructor quality and user experience in influencing student engagement. The findings of this study shed meaningful light on the practical implications for instructors and APP software developers.
