Wetland maps are prerequisites for wetland inventory, development, planning, management, protection, and restoration, for conservation of wetland-dependent flora, fauna and humans. It is estimated that 15.26 million hectares exists as wetlands in India according to Space Application Centre (SAC), pertaining to wetlands having more than 56 hectares area. Past research on wetland conservation in the country has shown that micro-wetlands (satellite wetlands) around a bigger wetland act as constellation of habitat mosaic for resident and migratory waterfowls. Often, the size of these micro-wetlands is much smaller than 50 hectares. Therefore, there is a great need to map such wetlands (smaller than 50 hectares). The Tiruchirappalli district, situated in the state of Tamil Nadu, India, is selected for the present investigation to identify the potential wetlands through geo-spatial technology (GIS & RS). All the wetlands within the Tiruchirappalli district have been demarcated from 1973 applying temporal remote sensing data. A total of 2399 wetlands of various size categories have been identified in the Tiruchirappalli District, Tamil Nadu, India. Satellite remote sensing offers a unique opportunity in deriving various components of land information by integrating with ground based observation. Currently several remote sensing satellites are providing multispectral, hyperspectral and microwave data to cater the need of various land applications. Several old age remote sensing satellites have been updated with new generation satellites offering high spatial, spectral and temporal resolution. Microwave remote sensing data is now available with high spatial resolution and providing land information in cloudy weather condition that strengthening availability of remote sensing data in all days. Spatial resolution has significantly improved over the decades and temporal resolution has improved from months to daily. Indian Remote Sensing programs are providing state of the art satellite data in optical and microwave wavelength regions to meet large land applications in the country. Today several remote sensing data is available as open data sources. Upcoming satellite remote sensing data will help in precise characterization and quantification of land resources to support in sustainable land development planning to meet future challenges.

Classification urban features plays an important part in monitoring and development planning of the area. Optical remote sensing data is currently used in study land use/land cover. However, optical remote sensing data are affected by clouds and weather. Hence, it is difficult to update information. Sentinel-1 is the satellite mission which conducted by the European Space Agency (ESA). Sentinel-1 is composed of two satellites, Sentinel-1A and Sentinel-1B which carried C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) instrument, 10m spatial resolution and provided free of charge. SAR images, which is an active microwave data, is not affected by weather, day and night. In this article, the authors present the experimental results of using coherence technique of two SAR images acquised at different times to classify urban features. The classification accuracy by using VV and VH polarization images were respectively 89% and 93%. VH polarization image data used in classification urban feature is better than VV polarization image.
