Pollen diagrams from sites in southwest Nova Scotia and close to the New Brunswick – Nova Scotia border show that after retreat of the Wisconsin ice sheets, most tree taxa arrived in the extreme southwest of Nova Scotia earlier than anywhere else in the province. For most tree taxa, arrival times at sites in maritime Canada and in northeastern New England are consistent with very early dispersal of individuals along the coastal strip via the exposed coastal shelf and with their entering Nova Scotia from the southwest. These scattered pioneer populations acted as centres for major population expansions, which followed much later in some cases. Local environments, fire, and interspecies competition appear to have been more important than propagule dispersal rates as factors limiting the spread of most taxa.

The frequency of the middorsally striped morph of Rana sylvatica in Ontario and Manitoba varies from absence in southern Ontario to 80% on the coast of Hudson Bay, with a general value of 20–30% in the boreal forest, a rise to 50% on the forest–grassland ecotone in southern Manitoba, and a decline westward to 20% on the edge of the prairies. This morph is rare in the northeastern United States and Maritime Canada. The suggested relationship between its frequency and the "grassiness" of the background on which predators view it is reexamined, and it is suggested that a linkage with earlier transformation as demonstrated in Eurasian species may explain certain anomalies.

A surface depicting linear vertical movements in Maritime Canada was computed from sea-level data recorded by 8 tide guages and 308 mostly disjoint, relevelled segments of the first-order Canadian levelling network. Owing to the sparsity of the available data and their distribution, the velocity surface must be regarded as indicative of the crude features only. The indications are that there is a west-northwest trending belt of faster subsidence across the eastern end of the Bay of Fundy, and that there may be an area of uplift in northeastern New Brunswick. Although the faster subsidence around the eastern Bay of Fundy seems to be well established now, more data are needed to prove or dispel the existence of the indicated uplift.

The Partridge Island stratigraphic section at the Bay of Fundy, Maritime Canada, reveals a continental sedimentary succession with the end-Triassic mass extinction level closely followed by basalts of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP). New Paleomagnetic data show that a short reverse magnetic polarity chron, correlative to E23r of the Newark Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale (GPTS), is present below the extinction event. Organic carbon isotope data and basalt geochemistry further indicate that the onset of CAMP emplacement in the Bay of Fundy was roughly synchronous with emplacement in the Newark basin, but slightly postdates the oldest CAMP volcanism in Morocco by ∼20 ka. These results confirm the potential for long-distance CAMP correlations based on geochemical trace elements, indicate substantiate provincialism of latest Triassic palynoflora, and suggest a very concise period (<<100 ka) of CAMP emplacement in the northern Atlantic region.

The multifaceted career of Henry Alexander Saturnin Hartley (1861–1934) has been almost entirely overlooked by scholars. It however offers us a window into the way the study of classics traveled up and down the Atlantic seaboard and through the Americas. His peripatetic life which took him from Trinidad, to Paris, to maritime Canada, to South America and also to parts of the U.S. figures into the larger history of black classicism when knowledge of classical languages was a “currency” of its own. His 134-page book Classical Translations (Nova Scotia, 1889) was a singular achievement. It is the first book of translations taken from the literature of ancient Greece and Rome that was written and published by a person of African descent in the western hemisphere.

Many North American boreal forest birds reach the southern periphery of their distribution in the montane spruce–fir forests of northeastern United States and the barren coastal forests of Maritime Canada. Because the southern periphery may be the first to be impacted by warming climates, these populations provide a unique opportunity to examine several factors that will influence the conservation of this threatened group under climate change. We discuss recent research on boreal birds in Northeastern US and in Maritime Canada related to genetic diversity, population trends in abundance, distributional shifts in response to climate change, community composition, and threats from shifting nest predators. We discuss how results from these studies may inform the conservation of boreal birds in a warming world as well as open questions that need addressing.
