Abstract AISI Type M3 is a high-carbon, high-vanadium, molybdenum-type of high-speed steel. Its composition provides marked improvement in abrasion resistance, when compared with the other standard high-speed steels. It is especially well suited for difficult cutting applications where severe abrasion exists. It is produced in two slightly different analyses: Class 1 and Class 2; Class 2 contains slightly higher percentages of carbon and vanadium and is slightly more abrasion resistant than Class 1. Among the many applications for Type M3 are broaches, milling cutters and reamers. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, and hardness. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, and machining. Filing Code: TS-369. Producer or source: Tool steel mills.

Abstract AISI Type M33 is a heavy-duty high-speed steel; it contains 8.00% cobalt to improved red hardness. It is recommended for cutting-tool applications in which wear resistance and high temperature hardness are important characteristics. It should not be used where excessive shock and/or chatter are encountered. AISI Type M33 is well suited to uses such as machining hard and heat-treated materials and machining both ferrous and nonferrous aircraft alloys. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, and machining. Filing Code: TS-402. Producer or source: Tool steel mills.

Abstract AISI Type T1 is a general-purpose, tungsten, high-speed steel containing nominally 18% tungsten, 4% chromium and 1% vanadium. It is suitable for practically all high-speed applications. This steel has been the standard of the industry for many years because of its cutting ability, ease of heat treatment and minimum tendency to decarburize. Its many applications include drills, taps, lathe and planer tools, broaches and hobs. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, machining, and surface treatment. Filing Code: TS-373. Producer or source: Tool steel mills.

Abstract FAGERSTA M-7 is a molybdenum-type high-speed steel similar to AISI Type M1, but with higher percentages of carbon and vanadium than M1. The higher levels of carbon and vanadium provide an improved cutting efficiency without significantly lowering toughness. The many applications of FAGERSTA M-7 include boring tools, end mills, lathe tools, twist drills, thread-rolling dies and wood-working tools. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, machining, and surface treatment. Filing Code: TS-359. Producer or source: Fagersta Steels Inc..

Abstract AISI Type M42 is capable of being heat treated to Rockwell C 68-70; in fact, it is a super high-speed steel. Its combination of composition and properties makes it suitable for machining high-hardness alloys and difficult-to-machine superalloys. Excellent wear resistance and high hot hardness are obtained in Type M42 without loss of cuttting-edge toughness. Typical tools made from this steel are broaches, drills, gear cutters and milling cutters. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, and machining. Filing Code: TS-476. Producer or source: Tool steel mills.
