Intergenerational Facility Alternatives: Transitioning Care Options for Aging Parents and Children with Autism

Purpose: The objective was twofold: 1) summarize research-informed environmental characteristics into Mostafa’s seven ASPECTSS™ criteria for people who are aging, and for children who have autism, and 2) apply those characteristics within the context of a Green House planned intergenerational facility providing support to adult child with autism, and their parent(s). Background: The rate of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnoses is increasing, making it important to design spaces for people with ASD. Approximately 85% of children with ASD live with their parents (Mykyta, 2012). Ahrentzen & Steele (2010) identified the need to develop housing options for people with ASD. Method: Design considerations from a literature review were organized into two tables: 1) aging adults and 2) people who have ASD. Shared characteristics were placed into a third table using Mostafa’s seven ASPECTSS™ criteria, and then applied to the intergenerational facility plan to demonstrate the effectiveness of intentional planning by caregivers and the design community. Results: When integrating Mostafa’s ASPECTSS™ framework, and the intergenerational Green House Model, the application of design choices within housing demonstrates that appropriately designed space can positively impact persons and families with autism, regardless of age. Conclusion: Findings show numerous overlapping design criteria for people with autism and aging adults that can lead to effective environmental solutions for both. This facility type has the potential to minimize family fracture since aging parents are supported in their ability to care for their child with autism.

The article reveals the problem of including a parent and a child with autism spectrum disorder in cooperative activities using the example of two families participating in the research. The theoretical foundations of this problem and the practical results obtained at the first stage of the study by questioning parents, and also by observing the cooperative productive activities of the child and the parent during the drawing lessons. The question of the importance of parental involvement in the child's rehabilitation process is considered.

The purpose of this study was to investigate parent perceptions of the physical activity (PA) engagement of their adult children with autism spectrum disorders. The theoretical framework used in this study was social ecology. Participants were nine parents from families with one adult child with autism spectrum disorder whose ages ranged from 18 to 42. Using phenomenological interviews, which explored parents’ life experience and meaning making, four themes were generated: supports and advocacy for PA, engaging in PA independently, benefits of PA, and barriers to or reasons for disengaging in particular activities. Parents’ interview comments showed that intrapersonal factors, interpersonal relationships, and community factors were essential for keeping the individuals with autism spectrum disorder engaged in PA. Families and practitioners can take advantage of that by seeking PA opportunities in community settings or with other individuals.

<p>This research presented a preliminary study on designing a rehabilitation game for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. It has been proved that children with Autism are not interested in attending traditional rehabilitation treatments. Existing researches have shown that games and their usage in the rehabilitation area are growing fast. However, there is less research used to design a rehabilitation game ensuring that the proposed design criteria are based on the preference and requirements of users in order to maximize the engagement rate of the game. In this research, one-month observation sessions were conducted with five autistic participants with no design expertise in order to collect essential design considerations for a rehabilitation game. This paper proposed design considerations, which can be helpful to design a rehabilitation game to promote user engagement by addressing game mechanics and behavioral techniques according to the result of our observations.</p>

The current study examined whether nostalgia, a sentimental longing for the past, serves as a psychological resource for mothers of children with ASD (autism spectrum disorder). Twenty-six mothers of children with ASD were asked to complete measures of well-being during an initial visit. Over eight weeks, mothers were asked to write about their experiences with raising a child with ASD, which were coded for the use of nostalgic language. The results revealed that mothers who reported being lower in positive affect and parental well-being had increased nostalgic narratives over time. There were no significant findings for negative affect and life satisfaction. THis work provides a first step in understanding the relationship between nostalgia and mental health. Specifically, nostalgia may serve as a potential intervention to improve the well-being of parents and children with ASD.

Namun, pendampingan kadang hanya berfokus pada anak-anak normal belum banyak yang melakukan pendampingan bersama dengan anak-anak Autism. Oleh sebab itu, pendampingan ini dilakukan pada anaka-anak Autism Spectrum Disoreder dan orang tua aplikasi pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. terutama dalam pembelajaran reading sebagai bagian terpenting dari keterampilan berbahasa Inggris. Pendampingan ini dilakukan dengan cara berkeliling kerumah setiap peserta yang bersedia setiap minggunya yang mehasilkan adanya faktor pendukung serta faktor penghambat dalam pelaksanaan pendampingan, Kata kunci: membaca; storybook application; ASD; interaksi ABSTRACTThe development of technology in children's learning has resulted in parents and teachers having to participate in these developments for the sake of children's progress. One of the learning applications that can be used is Our story application which allows interaction between parents and children for learning English. However, sometimes mentoring only focuses on normal children, not many have assisted with Autism children. Therefore, this assistance is carried out for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and parents with English learning applications. especially in learning reading as the most important part of English language skills. This assistance is carried out by going around the house of each willing participant every week which results in supporting factors and inhibiting factors in the implementation of mentoring. Keywords: reading; storybook application; ASD; interaction.

Throughout the world, many children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). There are many challenges parents face in raising these special children. It includes the educational, financial, social and mental aspects of the parents themselves. Even parents with autism children are said to suffer more stress than parents with normal children or other disabilities. This article is intended to gain a better understanding of the major challenges parents face in autism children. Based on the reading and observation, parents found that children with autism had their own challenges in raising their children. They need the support and concern of all parties to stay strong for their children. At the end of this article is the hope that the parental voice can be addressed. Also, this service can inspire parties such as government departments, NGO’s and the rest of the community to come up with a program or support plan that can help parents and children with autism. This study uses qualitative methods in which the researcher will conduct semi-structured interviews to understand the meaning given by the respondents on this issue.
