The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship among quality management practices, product and process innovation and competitive advantage in manufacturing companies certified with ISO 9001 in Brazil, using the model proposed by Kafetzopoulos, Gotzamani, and Gkana (2015). The study can be classified as descriptive, with data collection carried out by survey and quantitative approach with structural equation modelling. The results showed the model adopted has quality to measure the proposed relations, in addition to support the hypothesis previously defined. The conclusion of the study indicates the results contribution to the studies on the theme, the quality management practices have a positive and significant relationship with both types of innovation investigated, and the respective constructs of innovation have positive and significant relationships with competitive advantage.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent to which five core dimensions of quality management, as a single factor, are associated with product innovation and process innovation; and finally how these two affect a firm’s competitive advantage in the market. Design/methodology/approach – The analysis followed in order to investigate the relations between the constructs of the proposed model, includes an initial exploratory factor analysis (EFA), followed by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and finally structural equation modelling (SEM) Findings – According to the study findings, quality management (QM) directly contributes to product and process innovation. Furthermore, product and process innovation have a direct impact on companies’ competitive advantage. Thus, the study proves that QM is an opportunity for a firm to improve its innovation and consequently its competitiveness. Research limitations/implications – This study relies on the perceptions of the respondents to operationalize the survey instrument. In addition, all variables are measured in the year that the survey was carried out. However, since the research exams the relationship between QM, technical innovation and competitive advantage across various organizations, it would be interesting to conduct a longitudinal study within these organizations. Practical implications – Our study offers clear implications for managers, proving that they should give higher emphasis on QM and innovation in order to prioritize their product, production and technology strategies, to achieve sustainable competitive advantage. Originality/value – Based on the multi-dimensional structure of QM, this empirical study determines the contribution of QM to specific innovation performance and overall competitiveness of companies.

Local products of manufacturing industries in Tanzania are subjected to intense competition in the markets. Product quality is one of key factors that play a considerable role for manufacturing industries to win the competitive advantage. This paper attempts to analyse the extents of quality management practices (QMP) and manufacturing performance (MP) as well as to examine the linkage between practices and performance. Data was collected from seventy-eight (78) manufacturing industries in Dar es Salaam region using questionnaires comprising of both single-item and multi-item questions. Descriptive statistics was used to quantify the extent of quality management practices and manufacturing performance (MP) of the industries. Factor analysis was used to reduce the scale items of QMP and MP into few underlying factors representing the items without loss of information. As a consequence, four QMP and two MP factors were identified. A correlation analysis was used to evaluate the effect of QMP on the performance of manufacturing industries. The findings show that most of manufacturing industries in Tanzania are large in scale and owned by private companies. Among these industries, many of them are dealing with food, beverage and tobacco products. The extent of quality management practices and manufacturing performance are favourable. Further to that, quality management practices mainly quality commitment significantly correlates with both operational and financial performance. This can be seen as a positive indication of the top management commitment in quality issues throughout the supply chain in supporting customer satisfaction, competitive advantage, flexibility in production quantity and overall product quality. Thus, local manufacturing industries should utilise the quality management and performance strengths to produce high-quality products that will penetrate into the markets. In addition, enforcement on the implementation of quality management tools and methods is required for the purpose of realising reasonable operational and financial performance while winning the competitive advantage.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the effect of supply chain quality management on operational performance in Vietnamese manufacturing companies. Design/methodology/approach Questionnaire survey is conducted to collect data from Vietnamese manufacturing companies in the electronic/electric industry. Collected data were analyzed by using correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis. Findings This study points out the current situation of implementing supply chain quality management practices in Vietnamese manufacturing companies which are more focused on internal quality management practices than upstream and downstream quality management practices. Correlation and regression analyses that demonstrate the significant linkage between supply chain quality management practices and operational performance are confirmed in this study. Upstream and downstream quality management are found to be the significant predictor for high performance on quality, cost and delivery. Research limitations/implications This study has some limitations that can be addressed in future studies. The first limitation is the relatively small sample size due to lack of time and resources. These constraint can be overcome in future works by collecting more data in diverse countries and industries to re-examine the framework. Furthermore, larger sample will allow researchers to apply other statistical methods such as path analysis and structural equation modelling, which would provide interesting results. Another limitation is that the collected data in this paper mainly rely on perceptions of the respondents, which may cause individual bias in analysis. To reduce this type of bias, both subjective and objective measurement of scales, especially performance measures, can be used in future studies. Practical implications This study provides empirical evidences that practitioners can use to improve a specific type of performance, especially in the context of emerging economies. In a turbulent and unpredictable business environment, it is emphasized that quality management should be extended at supply chain level to utilize the capabilities of external partners. In Vietnamese manufacturing firms, implementation of such practices as information technology links, information sharing, supplier involvement and customer involvement would lead to high level of operational performance. Originality/value Supply chain management and quality management are two fields of study that have gained much attention of researchers. However, the concept of supply chain quality management as well as its impact on business performance have not been fully studied, especially in context of a developing country. Through extensive literature review, this study proposes and tests an analytical framework that characterizes supply chain quality management into three elements: internal quality management, upstream quality management and downstream quality management. Subsequently, their impact on quality, cost and delivery are analyzed to provide better understanding of supply chain quality management in Vietnamese context.

Supply chain quality management is receiving the increasing interests of managers not only in Vietnam, but also in over the world, though research to date insufficiently meets the practical needs of business. Taking an advantage, this study aims at providing practical experiences in supply chain quality management practices of companies in Vietnam which effectively effects on their firm’s performance. On the basis of reviewing previous studies, this study is conducted through in-depth interviewing with seven experts of the seven manufacturing companies in Vietnam and researching case study at two typical manufacturing companies in the steel and packaging manufacturing industry in Vietnam. The result finds that there are six critical aspects of supply chain quality management practices having the impact on firms’ performance in Vietnam, specifically top management support, human resource development, internal lean practices, supplier focus, strategic supplier partnership and customer focus. Finally, it provides an interesting reference for supply chain managers in Vietnam in searching the appropriate approaches to increase the performance of the business through supply chain quality management practices.

Effective improvement in quality has become a potentially precious way to boost competitiveness and organizational performance. This paper aims to assess for competitive advantage and organizational performance the effects of Total quality management (TQM) activities. A quantitative approach is used to obtain data from a survey (questionnaire) consisting of 38 items with a five-point Likert scale. The unit of analysis is small and medium food companies in Iraq. The respondents in this paper are the managers of departments. Smart PLS 3.2.9 was used to analyze the results. The findings of the path analysis of partial least squares (PLS) support variables in their hypothesised direct relationships with organizational performance. The analysis results suggest that competitive advantage partially mediates the relationship between (TQM) practices and organizational performance. The paper provides many suggestions that are helpful both for researchers and policymakers to undertake more research in this area as well as to enhance the (CA) and (OP) of organisations in the future.
