Abstract Background The misuse of chemical insecticides has developed the phenomenon of habituation in the whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) causing enormous economic losses under geothermal greenhouses in southern Tunisia. Results In order to develop means of biological control appropriate to the conditions of southern Tunisia, the efficacy of the native strain of the predator Nesidiocoris tenuis Reuter (Hemiptera: Miridae) and two entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) Beauveria bassiana and Lecanicillium muscarium was tested against Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius). Indeed, the introduction of N. tenuis in doses of 1, 2, 3, or 4 nymphs per tobacco plant infested by the whitefly led to highly significant reduction in the population of B. tabaci, than the control devoid of predator. The efficacy of N. tenuis was very high against nymphs and adults of B. tabaci at all doses per plant with a rate of 98%. Likewise, B. bassiana and L. muscarium, compared to an untreated control, showed a very significant efficacy against larvae and adults of B. tabaci. In addition, the number of live nymphs of N. tenuis treated directly or introduced on nymphs of B. tabaci treated with the EPF remained relatively high, exceeding 24.8 nymphs per cage compared to the control (28.6). Conclusions It can be concluded that the native strain of N. tenuis and the EPF tested separately were effective against B. tabaci. Their combined use appears to be possible.

The interactions between the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana Balsamo (Vuillemin) (Hypocreales: Cordycipitaceae) and the entomopathogenic fungus Isaria fumosorosea (Wize) Brown and Smith (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) were examined on young adults of Sitophilus granarius (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and S. oryzae (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Conidial suspensions of these entomopathogenic fungi were applied both separately and in combination, at three dosages, 104, 106, and 108 conidia/mL. Mortality of experimental adults was recorded daily for 15 days. An overall positive interaction between the pathogenic microorganisms was observed. Mean weevil mortality caused by the separate acting fungi, B. bassiana, ranged from 26.7% to 53.3% and from 36.6% to 63.3% for S. granarius and S. oryzae, respectively. The respective values for I. fumosorosea were 20.0%–53.3% and 46.7%–66.7%. The combined treatments showed a distinct interaction between the pathogens; for S. granarius, the interaction between the pathogens was additive in all combinations, whereas, for S. oryzae, the interaction was additive in seven and competitive in two of the combinations. Applying both entomopathogenic microorganisms may offer a method for weevil control that could be more effective than using each pathogen alone.

AbstractThe insecticidal efficacy of the experimental bioinoculants (Natur Nova, Natur Agro Hungary Ltd., Hungary) containing Beauveria bassiana (Bals.-Criv). Vuill. and Metarhizium anisopliae Metschnikoff against stored product pests modelled by granary weevil, Sitophilus granarius L. was evaluated on wheat in laboratory tests. In order to comparability, two applications were also set up: one purely ash-treated grain treatment against wireworms and a soil-injected one. Our results confirmed that some biopesticides can exert unexpected effect on non-target arthropods. However, the examined biopesticides were as empirically effected against the target arthropods regarding wireworms. Nevertheless, the application exempt from ash of the examined bioinoculants Natur Nova containing B. bassiana and M. anisopliae were not suitable for the elimination of the stored product pests modelled by S. granarius. In contrast, the putative plant protection effect of these biopesticides was observed in the course of applying the agents in the recommended environment and pest species as well as when applying them with ash carrier.
