We studied the variation of morphological characters, ontogenetic structure and vitality of seven cenopopulations of Dactylorhiza viridis (L.) R. M. Bateman, Pridgeon & M. W. Chase within the Kabardino-Balkar Republic in 2015–2019. The studies were conducted in the meadow plant communities under different conditions of anthropogenic load (recreation and grazing). The species presents medium phytocenotic plasticity of morphological characters (I p=36–70%) and high variation of morphological characters (CVх–ср=18,55–45,22%) under changeable conditions of growth. The intensification of growth processes in the individuals with the maximum increase of the cenopopulation vitality (IVC = 1,12–1,18) is observed in the composition of undisturbed meadows. The portion of generative individuals is 44,8–52,6% in ontogenetic spectra, and the stable seed reproduction of cenopopulations is registered. Under the intensification of the anthropogenic load, the vitality of cenopopulations (IVC = 0,80–1,04) and the density of individuals (0,47–3,20 ind./m2) are decreased; the portion of generative individuals is increased in ontogenetic spectra (65,4–81,6%). The rate of the seed reproduction of cenopopulations, in which the density of individuals accounts for 28,47 ind./m2, is high on the rubbly substrata with low total projective cover.

AbstractThe paper deals with bryophytes collected by Polish researchers from the mires in the eastern part of Lithuania in 1934–1940 and deposited at the Herbarium of W. Szafer Institute of Botany, Polish Academy of Sciences (KRAM). The collection provides data on bryophyte diversity and distribution patterns in the mires of Lithuania. The collection (868 specimens) was revised in 2016–2017. Almost 90% of all herbarium specimens were collected by Irena Dąbkowska. The specimens were identified by the collectors themselves or by Polish bryologist Zygmunt Czubiński; 254 specimens of the collection were not identified. After revision, a total of 112 bryophyte species were ascertained in the collection, two of these (Palustriella decipiens and Polytrichum swartzii) have not been reported to Lithuania before. The specimens were collected in 47 localities, the mires in nearly half of them at the moment are disturbed due to drainage or use for peat extraction. Information about the localities of rare species Hamatocaulis vernicosus, Meesia triquetra and Mesoptychia rutheana is valuable for the estimation of their population status.

We studied the variability and phytocenotic plasticity of the morphological characters of individuals, and the numbers, density, ontogenetic structure and vitality of 11 coenopopulations of Gymnadenia conopsea (L.) R. Br. within the Kabardino-Balkar Republic in 2015–2019. The variability and plasticity of plants features provide their adaptation to various growing conditions and improve the morphological heterogeneity of coenopopulations. The dynamics of abundance, density, age structure and vitality of coenopopulations in the changing conditions of the environment provides information about life strategies of the species. Age conditions, the variability and plasticity of plants were studied on the basis of morphological parameters of the aboveground organs without digging the plants. The studies were conducted in meadow plant communities under various conditions of anthropogenic load (recreation and grazing). The species is characterized by medium-high phytocenotic plasticity of morphological characters (Ip = 38–68%) and high variability of morphological characters (CVх¯ср = 17.10– 33.63%) under changeable growth conditions. Intensification of growth processes in the individuals with the maximum increase of the coenopopulation vitality (IVC = 0.98– 1.16) was observed in the composition of undisturbed highly wet meadows; the portion of generative individuals increased in their ontogenetic spectra (48.6–56.5%). Under the anthropogenic load intensification, the vitality of coenopopulations (IVC = 0.82– 0.95) and the density of individuals decreased; the portion of virginal individuals increased in their ontogenetic spectra (rubbly meadows) or coenopopulations were clearly aging. The rate of the seed reproduction of coenopopulations, where the density of individuals accounted for 16 ind./m2 , was high on rubbly substrata with low total projective cover (60%). Our studies have identified the mixed type of life strategy for Gymnadenia conopsea with stress-tolerant and ruderal components. The ruderal-stress-tolerant life strategy allows the species to grow for a long time in conditions of high interspecific competition and anthropogenic load, spreading quickly to unoccupied territories.

AbstractThe features of the ontogenetic structure of cenopopulations of a rare species Hedysarum gmelinii Ledeb. (Fabaceae) were studied on the periphery of its range (the Middle Volga region and the Bashkir Cis-Urals) and in its central part (the Altai Mountains region). Types of cenopopulations were determined according to the “delta-omega” criterion: in the Bashkir Urals, they were mostly young, in the Middle Volga region, they were mature, in the Altai Mountains, they were maturing. The proportion of pregenerative individuals in populations increases in habitats with high moisture levels. Anthropogenic load (mainly in the form of grazing) had a greater effect on the number and density of individuals, rather than on the type of ontogenetic spectrum of cenopopulations.

We studied variation of morphological characters, ontogenetic structure and vitality of six cenopop-ulations of Neotinea ustulata within the Kabardino-Balkar Republic in 2017–2019. The studies were conducted in the meadow plant communities under different conditions of anthropogenic load (grazing, recreation). The species presents low phytocenotic plasticity of morphological characters (Ip = 17–46%) and high variation of morphological characters (average value of CVх¯ср is 22.90%) under changeable conditions of growth. The intensification of growth processes in the individuals with the maximum increase of the cenopopulation vitality (IVC= 1.03–1.08) is observed in the composition of undisturbed meadows. The portion of generative individuals is 60.4–65.2% in ontogenetic spectra, the weak seed reproduction and the low density of cenopopulations (3.38–4.62 ind./m2) is registered. Under the intensification of the anthropogenic load, vitality of cenopopulations (IVC= 0.92–0.95) is decreased; the portion of pregenerative individuals in ontogenetic spectra (77.4–82.7%) and the density of individuals (8.22–12.34 ind./m2) are increased within the meadow with low total projective cover.

<p>The decline in the global biodiversity and the increase in the number of threatened plant species are the extremely unfavorable trends over the past decades. These phenomena determined the need for the thorough and detailed study of the plant population resistance mechanisms, and the development of the methods to predict the risks of their extinction. In the recent years, simultaneous assessment of the ontogenetic and the vital structure of the populations has become the most recognized method of studying populations. This approach has provided a significant increase in the reliability assessment of the population status and led to improved predictions of their dynamics. However, there are a limited number of the papers containing the complex demographic analysis, including the field size of the population, the number of individuals in the population, the population density, as well as genetic, ontogenetic, and vital structure of the populations with their dynamics. The purpose of this work was to determine the current state and to predict the possible trends in the status of seven rare plant species’ populations located on the territory of the National Nature Park “Desnyansko-Starogutsky” (Sumy province, Ukraine). Rare plants <em>Epipactis helleborine</em> (L.) Crantz, <em>Lilium martogon</em> L., <em>Listera ovata</em> (L.) R. Br., <em>Platanthera chlorantha</em> (Cust.) Rchb., and <em>Pulsatilla patens</em> (L.) Mill. are the species listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. Plant species <em>Circaea alpina</em> L. and <em>Pyrola chlorantha</em> Sw. are designated as the rare species on the territory of Sumy region. Integral estimation of the population status has based on the determination of such parameters as population size, population density, the ontogenetic index, and the index of the population vitality. Correlation analysis revealed a high level of correlation (r = 0. 99) not between everyone, but between some of the population parameters only. In our study, the indices that characterize the ontogenetic structure of the populations were the most frequently correlated: renewal index, generative index, as well as indexes of the population age (Δ) and the effectiveness of the population (ω). The regression analysis revealed that the long-term monitoring of the rare plant populations will be an integral character in the case of accounting for such factors as the population size and density dynamics over the years, changes in the population vitality (Q), and the annual changes of the magnitude of ω, which integrates the ontogenetic structure of the populations. It has been established that the populations of <em>L</em><em>.</em><em> martagon</em> from the phytocenoses of <em>Pinetum coryloso-maіanthemosum</em> and <em>Fraxinetum coryloso-convallariosum</em> were stable enough together with the progressive development trend. The populations of the rare species <em>C</em><em>.</em><em> alpina</em>, <em>L</em><em>.</em><em> martagon</em> (habitat between <em>Betuleta corylosa</em> and <em>Pineta corylosa-convallariosum</em>), and <em>P</em><em>.</em><em> patens</em> were estimated as the sustainable. A clear tendency toward a decrease in the individuals’ number was found in rare species represented by only one population (<em>L. ovata</em>, <em>P. chlorantha</em>, and <em>Pl. chlorantha</em>), as well as in one of the several populations of the species <em>C</em><em>.</em><em> alpina</em><em> </em>and <em>E. helleborine</em>. It was confirmed, that the dynamics of the rare plant populations is influenced not only by the internal population processes. The external ecological and coenotic factors, including the ones of a catastrophic nature, which are associated with the succession processes, as well as the level of wildlife conservation in the natural areas of Ukraine can be of decisive importance.</p>
