The caucasica species group in the subgenus Lunatipula is redefined and now consists of five species native to the Caucasus. Tipula (L.) eleniyasp. nov. is described as new to science, and variations in the male terminalia in two populations are noted. Two subspecies (quadridentataquadridentata and quadridentatapaupera) are elevated to species rank. Detailed photo’s complement the descriptions of all five species (caucasica, eleniya, paupera, quadridentata, talyshensis), and data on ecology and distribution patterns are included as well as identification keys to males and females. Tipula caucasica is recorded from the West Caucasus and Tipula quadridentata is recorded from Dagestan (Russia) for the first time. Parallel evolution is traced in the male terminalia of the new species and in several non caucasica species group of Palaearctic Lunatipula.

From the Netherlands, three desmid species are newly described to science: Actinotaenium spinosporum (with zygospores), Staurastrum brachiatoides (with zygospores) and Staurastrum quadriradiatum. In addition to that, zygospores of the rather rare species Staurastrum echinatum are described for the first time. Differences with similar-looking species are discussed.

Leuctra adjariae sp. n. and Leuctra georgiae sp. n. (Plecoptera: Leuctridae) are described as two new apterous stonefly species from the Meskheti Range (Lesser Caucasus) in southwestern Georgia. Descriptions and illustrations are provided for both sexes and diagnostic characters are discussed. Males and females of the two species are associated by DNA barcodes. Comparisons with corresponding regions of COI between L. adjariae sp. n. and L. georgiae sp. n. produced K2P genetic distances of 8.38%, values well associated with interspecific variation. The well-supported monophyly as well as results of an ABGD analysis confirms the validity of both new species. Capnioneura gouanerae Vinçon & Sivec, 2011, previously described and known only from Turkey, is reported for the first time for the Caucasus.

The paper presents new data about the diversity of invertebrates associated with decomposed wood from the Plaiul Fagului Reserve. A total of 60 invertebrate species belonging to 45 genera, 20 families and two classes Collembola and Insecta (Coleoptera and Hymenoptera) were identified. A rare species - Carabus intricatus and C. ullrichi included in the third edition of the Red Book were highlighted. Four new species of Coleoptera are recorded for the first time for the reserve

Based on the results of field works by A.A. Golovlev in July 2017, data on new and noteworthy species for the lichen flora of the Prielbrusiy National Park are presented. The specimens were collected in the Adyl-Su River gorge, Elbrus district, Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria. In total 75 species from 44 genera are listed here with their localities and substrates, and novelties data. Eighteen species are new for the Prielbrusiy National Park, of which twelve were found for the first time in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (Aspicilia cf. laevata, Blastenia hungarica, Bryoria vrangiana, Cladonia cyathomorpha, Henrica melaspora, Lasallia rossica, Lecidea promiscens, Normandina pulchella, Parmelina tiliacea, Ramalina pollinaria, Rinodina trevisanii, Rusavskia sorediata). Henrica melaspora is reported for the first time for Caucasus, Cladonia cyathomorpha is new to the Russian Caucasus. Two species (Lecidea promiscens and Rinodina trevisanii) are reported for the first time for the Central Caucasus. The genus Henrica is reported as new to the Caucasus, and the genus Normandina is new for the lichen flora of Kabardino-Balkaria.

Three new species from the Caucasus are described: Quedius (Raphirus) nonseriatus sp. nov., Q. (R.) henrii sp. nov. and Q. (R.) humosus sp. nov. New data on distribution and bionomics are recorded for a rare species, Q. (Microsaurus) bernhaueri Rambousek (southern Macedonia and northern Greece), as well as for little-known Q. (M.) walteri Korge (north-eastern Turkey), Q. (R.) boluensis Korge (northern Turkey) and Q. (R.) semirufus (northern Iran and Azerbaijan). For Q. bernhaueri the type material is examined and the lectotype is designated.

A taxonomic study on bdelloid rotifers collected from various terrestrial habitats at six different locations in Korea yielded 12 new Korean records and a new species, Philodina koreana n. sp. Among the 12 new Korean records, eight species and two subspecies are new to Asia. These new Asian records include five rare species with poorly known distributions. Philodina childi Milne and P. scabra Milne were rediscovered in Korea almost 100 years after the original descriptions from South Africa. Our study is the first to report Habrotrocha longicalcarata Bērzinš outside its type locality. Macrotrachela nixa Donner has previously been reported only from New Zealand and the Antarctic after description from Spain. Finally, H. solida Donner is recorded outside Europe for the first time. Here, we provide a description of the new species and discuss the taxonomy and distribution of these five rare species. In addition, a partial sequence of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (mtCOX1) for P. koreana n. sp. as well as a taxonomic key for the Philodina species recorded from Korea to date are also provided here.

The use of modern methods of microstratigraphic and planigraphic analyses allows the authors to speak about features of organizing life space in the Middle Paleolithic sites. The layer 6B at Saradj-Chuko grotto can be defined as an actively occupied Middle Paleolithic habitation site, where ancient humans were engaged in manufacture and use of obsidian tools. A tracelogical analysis allowed the authors to reconstruct various economic activities of ancient humans. For the first time for the Middle Paleolithic site in the northern slope of the central Caucasus, a tracelogical analysis was carried out taking into account the space distribution of tools over the site area, which allowed us to study features of human activity at different areas of the site. The new data are considered within a broad context of the Middle Paleolithic of the Caucasus, as well as the available data on economic activity and residential structures in various sites are analyzed.

The greatest species diversity of Sphagnum mosses for the Central Caucasus was found in the flora of Sphagnum floating mires in the vicinity of the settlement Verkhnyaya Balkaria, Cherekskiy District, Kabardino-Balkarian Republic, where 12 species of Sphagnum were recorded: Sphagnum angustifolium, S. balticum, S. fallax, S. flexuosum, S. fuscum, S. girgensohnii, S. magellanicum s. l., S. obtusum, S. palustre, S. papillosum, S. squarrosum, S. teres. The list of species collected by authors [7 VII 2017 Украинская, Якимов (Ukrainskaya, Yakimov)] with specimen numbers, references on collecting sites (table 1), frequency and data on distribution in Caucasus is provided. Sphagnum obtusum and S. papillosum are recorded for the first time for the Russian Caucasus, S. flexuosum is recorded for the first time for Kabardino-Balkaria. Distribution of every recorded Sphagnum species within the Sphagnum floating mire complex is discussed. The associated mosses, including rare for the mire communities of the Caucasus Meesia triquetra, Polytrichum commune, Tetraplodon mnioides, Warnstorfia fluitans, W. pseudostraminea are listed. It is suggested to include this lake-mire complex in the Kabardino-Balkaria Nature Reserve.
