It has been proposed that the theory and practice of information systems development could benefit from a more explicit consideration of concepts of rationality. Habermas’ communicative rationality has been proposed as an approach to improve the conditions for rational discourse in systems development, thereby improving outcomes (Klein and Hirschheim 1991), and applied at the project level (Ulrich 2001) and to specific episodes of managerial communications (Ngwenyama and Lee 1997). At the same time, it is understood that societal discourses and ideologies shape the external environments of organizational decision making. A variety of approaches has been proposed to analyze these discourses including qualitative techniques for reading or interpreting texts, artifacts, and social practices (Philips and Hardy 2002). This paper examines the way in which Habermasian validity claims can provide an explicit and ethical standard for critical discourse analysis in order to reveal the distortions that shape the institutional environments of technology decision making. It offers an approach to operationalizing Habermas’ validity claims for an analysis of media texts related to a case study involving learning technology.

This study made explicit the discourses of 10 teachers working as university-based teacher educators in Singapore to understand their enacted identities. It framed identity as discursive, constructed through language and talk. Interview data were analyzed using descriptive discourse analysis tools, with critical discourse analysis influencing the process. The discourses are as follows: (a) The value of seconded teachers is located firmly within schools, with practice and practitioner elevated above theory and academics; (b) teaching is the core role of seconded teachers, and discourses about learning, development, and research are weak; and (c) an individualistic framing situates the locus of change on teacher-practitioners. Hybrid spaces that bring theory and practice together are discursive spaces. Both the strengths and limitations of existing discursive identities need to be acknowledged, and multifaceted and complex practitioner identities explored. This article contributes to the integration of practitioners into the wider community of teacher educators in the university.

Between 1979 and 2003, when Baath party was in power in Iraq, minorities were neglected and were not part of the decision-making process. It was the priority of the new government that other components of Iraq where part of the process. The draft of the constitution of2005, in a number of provisions, do mention all the Iraqi components. However, no law has been passed to protect the rights of minorities and there is lack of appropriate mechanism to bring perpetrators to justice once violations have been committed against them. The data is taken from the English version of the Iraqi Constitution. The principles of critical discourse analysis areused as method to deconstruct the legal language of the constitution. This research undertakes a critical analysis of the legal discourseof the Iraqi Constitution and examines the provision of the constitution to highlight whether minorities in Iraq are protected under the constitution and whether the legal language of the constitutionis drafted in a way that is not vague or ambiguous to guarantee that protection. It is an attempt to investigate the legal language of Iraqi Constitution critically. The study concludes that the constitution was written in a way that may allow different interpretations, that is why it is difficult to be implemented with the available mechanisms. The study recommends that the constitution should be amended in a way that is inclusive of all minorities in Iraq and the provisions represent the quality between and among all the Iraqi components

Abstract This study focuses on the recent increase in the use of older celebrities in cosmetics advertising. It asks what kinds of ideas and values these images may attribute to discourses of ageing. Drawing on a Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis (MCDA) perspective, this study focuses on L'Oréal UK and Ireland Web advertisements, examining how these advertisements use older celebrities to redefine/reposition ageing and exploring how they relate to the notion of ‘successful ageing’. In these advertisements, using cosmetics is presented as a positive, empowering choice. The advertisements simultaneously promote new discourses about ageing in which older women's sexuality is presented as a form of power. However, the analysis shows that the underlying discourse pathologises ageing and presents ageing as something which can be evaded through the consumption of cosmetics. It thus turns ageing into a choice, but one where the ‘right choice’ aligns with neo-liberal ideas about ageing well. For women, decision-making about ageing seems to be a never-ending process that requires constant construction, promoted through the older celebrity's sexualisation. Women are expected to always look good and present the best versions of themselves, even at the latest stages of life, which reproduces and legitimises sexist and ageist expectations about women's appearances, including the expectations that for older women to remain visible and attractive, they must hide outward signs of ageing.

This paper is based on the premise that discourse is always under the influence of different ideological readings which not only formulate its meaning but inspire various interpretations as well; hence, it needs a theoretical cover that could justify its multiplicity of meaning. This paper, therefore, discusses the possibility of introducing a deconstructive, reader-oriented approach (DRA) to Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as a model of discourse interpretation. The paper tries to appraise the theoretical framework of CDA and to offer an overview of the fundamental propels of its interpretative task in the light of two poststructuralist literary theories: the deconstruction theory and the reception theory. The paper also endeavours to emphasize the deconstructive nature of CDA by shedding lights on its relationship with the above mentioned theories. The conclusion drawn from this paper shows that introducing a deconstructive, reader-oriented approach to CDA is relevant to the latter's interpretative nature enough to diminish a part of the criticism levelled against its interpretative framework concerning plurality of meaning; and to establish some sort of exoneration for its theoretical shortcomings. The paper recommends that DRA will bridge the gap between theory and practice as it offers a theoretical base to discourse which could advocate its critiques regarding diversity of interpretation. Keywords: Critical discourse analysis, deconstructive, reader-oriented approach, deconstructionism, interpretation, responsiveness

Strategic legitimation of state shipping subsidies Our purpose was to identify strategies through which different actors construct the legitimacy of state subsidies to shipping. To this end, we analysed documents and interviews using Critical Discourse Analysis. Five discourses were identified as legitimating state shipping subsidies: preventing outflagging, securing employment, maintaining logistical routes and security of supply, promoting tourism, and guaranteeing conformity among EU countries. To conclude, shipping subsidies have a legitimate position among the most important decision-making stakeholder groups in Finland, which ensures the stability and continuity of the subsidizing.
