It is important to preserve the fish products in proper storage condition until further use. Keeping this point in view, fish stick prepared from silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) mince by using different kinds of food additives were stored at refrigeration (5 to 8°C) and frozen temperatures (-18 to -20°C) temperature. The results showed that, on “0” day the sensory quality criteria score was 9.00±0.00a for general appearance which decreased to 8.70±0.39a after 3 days of storage at refrigeration temperature and to 8.49±0.41aat frozen temperature after 56 days of storage. The TVBN values were found 22.54±0.17aand 16.04±0.39a, respectively at refrigeration and frozen temperatures which was 7.84±0.95c on “0” day. The peroxide value of the product on “0” day was 6.19 ± 0.71eand the microbial load was 1.49 x104 CFU/g which reached to 19.94 ± 0.17a, 21.58 ± 0.78a meq/kg and 2.13 x107 CFU/g, 1.12 ×102 CFU/g after storage at refrigeration and frozen temperatures. By observing these results present study could be concluded as-frozen temperature storage is comparatively better than refrigeration temperature for storing minced based ‘ready to cook’ products like fish stick and at this temperature the product can be stored for about 8 weeks. The experiment was operated in 9 consecutive weeks in nine earthen nursery ponds having the same area (0.09 acre) and depth (0.8 m). Seven days old fries of Silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) were stocked at 4000, 5000 and 6000 fries/decimal in three treatments with three replications as T-1, T-2 and T-3, respectively to observe the growth and survival. At stocking, hatchlings were the same batch-rearing with an average length and weight of 0.44 ± 0.05 cm and 0.14 ± 0.05 mg, respectively. Wet mustered oil cake and commercial nursery feed containing 30% crude protein were given by two weeks interval, initially according to the bodyweight; the feeding rate was 14% in the first two weeks, gradually reduced to 12, 10 and 8%, respectively in the following week intervals. Water quality parameters and plankton sufficiency were observed every 15 days interval and was found within the acceptable range. Growth performance (6.458 g), survival rate of fingerlings (85.76%) and total production (22151g/decimal) were found highest in T-1 followed by T-2 and T-3. The study concluded that expect better production of fry up to fingerlings, proper stocking density should be maintained in pond fish culture in Jashore region of Bangladesh.

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the growth performance of silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) in cage stocking at different densities. It was expected that silver carp could grow feeding on plankton without external feeding. In this experiment, silver carps in nine cages were stocked in three different stocking densities such as 20, 30 and 40 fishes/m3 designated as treatments T1, T2 and T3, which were located in the south west corner of the L-shaped pond in Field Laboratory Complex, Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh consisting of three treatments with three replications of each for a period of 90 days from 18th August to 17th November, 2015. Each cage size was 1m x 1m x1m (length x width x height) and silver carp was cultured in the cage with natural feed which filtered phytoplankton mainly. Twenty five genera of phytoplankton were identified in pond and the average phytoplankton production was around 8.44x105cells/liter. Water quality parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and transparency were recorded fortnightly. At the completion of the experiment, weight showed significant difference (p>0.05) among three treatments although length didn’t vary significantly. The highest length gain (18.61+0.369 cm) and the highest weight gain (62.52+2.249 g) were found in T1. The highest SGR% for silver carp was found in T1 and the highest total production was obtained in T3 (5.00+ 0.015 kg/m3). Individual growth performance of silver carp was satisfactory. Further studies are needed with different stocking densities and duration to verify the result.J. Bangladesh Agril. Univ. 16(2): 322-327, August 2018

Abstract The effect of silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix Val.) feeding activity on the plankton communities in a high-rate pond technology system (HRPTS) effluent was investigated over a period of 100 days. The experiment was conducted at the experimental wastewater treatment plant of the Agronomic and Veterinary Medicine Institute (AVI) of Rabat, Morocco, using a HRPTS in a fish pond receiving the plant effluent. The effluent was highly dominated by phytoplankton (99.95%). Silver carp could survive and grow in the fish pond. Production was 37 kg with a very low mortality rate (12%). The high specific intestine weight (7%) and intake rates of biomass and phytoplankton by silver carp (616 g kg-1 of fish day-1 and 1.6 x 1011 cell kg-1 of fish day-1, respectively) demonstrated the importance of the feeding activity of the fish. Zooplankton intake rates were lower (2 x 107 bodies kg-1 of fish day-1). The high intestine index (3 to 4.3 for fish sizes of 14 to 22 cm) and the dominance of phytoplankton in the gut contents (99.95%) confirmed an omnivorous/ phytoplanctivorous diet. Silver carp were efficient in removing plankton from the HRPTS effluent. The net removal yields of biomass were 285 g m-3 day-1 and 322 g kg-1 of fish day-1, 7 x 1010 algal cells kg-1 of fish day-1 and 8.7 x 107 zooplankton bodies kg-1 of fish day-1, with net removal rates of 47, 64 and 62%, respectively. The total suspended solids concentration decreased from 211 in the inflow to 112 mg L-1 in the fish pond.
