Objective: The clinical symptoms of neonatal Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) are not typical and are easy to miss. The aim of the study was to investigate the clinical features and genetic characteristics of seven cases of neonatal PWS from northern China, and to improve the understanding of PWS in neonates. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed seven infants diagnosed by methylation specific multiplex ligation probe amplification technology (MS-MLPA) in the Neonatology Unit of Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University from September 2016 to July 2020.Results: All seven cases involved full term or nearly full-term infants born to mothers without a history of abnormal pregnancy or delivery. Difficulty in feeding occurred immediately after birth in infants with decreased hypotonia. Five patients had characteristic craniofacial morphology, such as a prominent forehead, narrow face, almond-shaped eyes, small mouth, and downturned mouth. Further, three of the seven infants had patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). In addition, three neonates had hyperammonemia, hypoglycemia, and idiopathic edema, respectively. PWS could be effectively diagnosed and genotyped by MS-MLPA.Conclusion: Neonates with PWS have hypotonia and feeding difficulty. Characteristic facial features and genital hypoplasia are common in neonatal PWS. Infants with PWS may be predisposed to PDA, hypoglycemia, hyperammonemia, and edema.

A prospective investigation was conducted to determine if infants with necrotizing enterocolitis had evidence of carbohydrate intolerance prior to the onset of clinical symptoms of advanced disease. Stool specimens were examined for fecal reducing substances with Clintest tablets from well, full-term infants and sick premature infants. Only two of 45 (4.4%) formula-fed, full-term infants demonstrated higher than 2 + fecal reducing substances. Ten of 14 (71%) formula-fed premature infants who developed necrotizing enterocolitis had higher than 2 + reducing substances detected in their stools. Daily measurement of fecal reducing substances can be a useful adjunct in the management of sick premature infants.

To compare presence and severity of clinical symptoms of anxiety, dysphoria, and depression in mothers of preterm and of full-term infants and to observe changes in symptoms of mothers of preterm infants during hospitalization of the infants and after discharge, 50 mothers of preterm infants and 25 mothers of full-term infants completed the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Beck Depression Inventory. The mothers with preterm infants had significantly higher clinical symptoms of State Anxiety during hospitalization than the group with full-term infants, but the clinical symptoms of anxiety in mothers of preterm infants decreased significantly after discharge. The health staff in a neonatal intensive care unit should not only be aware of infants' clinical status but also of the mothers' emotional state.
