Several linkage maps, mainly based on anonymous markers, are now available for Lolium perenne . The saturation of these maps with markers derived from expressed sequences would provide information useful for QTL mapping and map alignment. Therefore, we initiated a study to develop and map DNA markers in genes related to self-incompatibility, disease resistance, and quality traits such as digestibility and sugar content in two L. perenne families. In total, 483 and 504 primer pairs were designed and used to screen the ILGI and CLO-DvP mapping populations, respectively, for length polymorphisms. Finally, we were able to map 67 EST markers in at least one mapping population. Several of these markers coincide with previously reported QTL regions for the traits considered or are located in the neighbourhood of the self-incompatibility loci, S and Z. The markers developed expand the set of gene-derived markers available for genetic mapping in ryegrasses.

Quantitative trait loci (QTL) analyses in pepper are common for horticultural, disease resistance, and fruit quality traits; although none of the studies to date have used sequence-based markers associated with genes. In this study we measured plant architectural, phenological, and fruit quality traits in a pepper mapping population consisting of 92 recombinant inbred lines derived from a cross between Capsicum frutescens acc. 2814-6 and C. annuum var. NuMexRNAKY. Phenotypic measurements were correlated to loci in a high-density EST-based genetic map. In total, 96 QTL were identified for 38 traits, including 12 QTL associated with capsaicinoid levels. Twenty-one loci showed correlation among seemingly unrelated phenotypic categories, highlighting tight linkage or shared genetics between previously unassociated traits in pepper.

A homozygous mapping population, consisting of doubled haploid (DH) oat ( Avena sativa L.) plants generated through anther culture of F1 plants from the cross between the Finnish cultivar ‘Aslak’ and the Swedish cultivar ‘Matilda’, was used to construct an oat linkage map. Ten agronomic and quality traits were analyzed in the DH plants from field trials in 2005 and 2006. Leaf blotch (caused by Pyrenophora avenae ) resistance was also evaluated in a greenhouse test with 2 different isolates. One to 8 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were found to be associated with each trait studied. Some chromosomal regions affected more than 1 trait; for example, 4 regions affected both protein and oil content. This study gives valuable information to oat breeders concerning the inheritance of important traits, and it provides potential tools to assist breeding.
