While aflatoxin metabolism in animals has been clarified, very limited information is so far available on the possible biotransformation occurring in plants. Therefore, this work aimed at investigating whether AFB1 metabolites could occur in field-grown infected maize and the putative role of Zea mays L. metabolism in their production. For such scope, asymptomatic in vitro–grown plantlets and in silico evaluations of plant transforming enzymes were used to pinpoint how plants may handle these compounds. Our data demonstrated the role of maize plants in the production of Phase I hydroxylated aflatoxins, including, among others, AFM1, AFM2, and aflatoxicol, and suggest that plant cytochromes may be involved in this biotransformation of AFB1.

Objetivo: Evaluar la actividad antihipertensiva de péptidos extraídos de zeína de maíz criollo azul y rojo nixtamalizado y sin nixtamalizar del Estado de México. Diseño/metodología/aproximación: Se emplearon herramientas bioinformáticas, tales como la base de datos NCBI para la búsqueda de secuencias primarias de la proteína zeína del maíz. La metodología incluyó una predicción de los péptidos con actividad antihipertensiva a través de diversos servidores bioinformáticos. La actividad inhibitoria se determinó mediante la regresión del porcentaje. Se realizó un análisis estadístico para evaluar las posibles diferencias significativas utilizando la prueba de Tukey (p<0.05). Resultados: Por medio de la hidrólisis in sílico se encontraron los siguientes péptidos: IFSILMLLA, LSACVLDATI, TASVCENPTL, LPLSPLLFQQ, SPALSLVQSL, LSPYSQQQQF, PFSQLATAY,            LPFYQQFSAN y PAAFYQQHII que mostraron actividad de inhibición de la ECA. Los resultados mostraron que el GH de la zeína fue mayor en maíz azul (13.96±0.02) que en maíz rojo (10.38±0.79) sin nixtamalizar, mientras que, con el proceso de nixtamalización, este parámetro también fue mayor en el maíz azul (10.52±0.57) que en el maíz rojo (8.96±0.01). Limitaciones del estudio/implicaciones: La enzima utilizada para la hidrólisis enzimática genera oligopéptidos que tal vez no puedan ser tan afines a la enzima convertidora de angiotensina. Hallazgos/conclusiones: La actividad antihipertensiva in vitro del maíz azul sin hidrolizar mostraron un menor porcentaje de inhibición de la ECA con respecto al maíz rojo sin hidrolizar. La hidrólisis con tripsina solo incrementa la actividad inhibitoria de la ECA en maíz azul a concentración de 0.3 mg/mL sin nixtamalizar.

Plant growth promoting endophytic bacteria, which can fix nitrogen, plays a vital role in plant growth promotion. Previous authors have evaluated the effect of Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus Pal5 inoculation on plants subjected to different sources of abiotic stress on an individual basis. The present study aimed to appraise the effect of G. diazotrophicus inoculation on the amelioration of the individual and combined effects of drought and nitrogen stress in maize plants (Zea mays L.). A pot experiment was conducted whereby treatments consisted of maize plants cultivated under drought stress, in soil with a low nitrogen concentration and these two stress sources combined, with and without G. diazotrophicus seed inoculation. The inoculated plants showed increased plant biomass, chlorophyll content, plant nitrogen uptake, and water use efficiency. A general increase in copy numbers of G. diazotrophicus, based on 16S rRNA gene quantification, was detected under combined moderate stress, in addition to an increase in the abundance of genes involved in N fixation (nifH). Endophytic colonization of bacteria was negatively affected by severe stress treatments. Overall, G. diazotrophicus Pal5 can be considered as an effective tool to increase maize crop production under drought conditions with low application of nitrogen fertilizer.

The Species Composition and Seasonal Dynamics of Thrips (Thysanoptera) Populations on Maize (Zea MaysL.) in Southeastern PolandThrips species composition and seasonal abundance was studied on maize crops during two seasons (2006-2007), in southeastern Poland. Altogether 21 species have been identified, among themFrankliniella tenuicornis(Uzel 1895) andHaplothrips aculeatus(Fabricius 1803) which are a graminicolous species and were eudominants, comprising 96.8% in 2006 and 82.0% in 2007 of all collected specimens. Other species occurred only in low numbers. The frequent and numerous presence ofF. tenuicornisspecies in their immature stages in the samples, confirmed the role of the maize plant as the host.H. aculeatusprobably chose maize as a food source and substitute plant for breeding.

A glass house study was conducted to evaluate the contribution of indigenous arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) in improving maize yield grown on sandy loam of Northern Lombok. The package of organic fertilizers treatments were tested including: without inoculation of mycorrhiza, inoculation mycorrhiza and no added inorganic fertilizers, inoculation of mycorrhiza with cattle manure added, inoculation of mycorrhiza with rock phosphate added and inoculation mycorrhiza with inorganic fertilizers. The treatments were arranged using a Completely Randomized Design with four replications. The results of the study show that the inoculation of AMF significantly increased soil concentration of N, available-P, K and organic-C by 37.39%, 60.79%, 66.66% and 110.15% respectively observed at 60 days after sowing (DAS). The similar trend was also found at 100 DAS, where those nutrients increased by 21.48%, 69%, 43.93% and 37.07%, respectively compared to control. The improving of soil fertility status was also reflected by nutrients uptake (i.e. N, P, K, Ca) as well as growth and yield of maize. N, P, K and Ca uptake increased by 1,608%, 1,121%, 533% and 534%, respectively. Roots and top dry biomass at 60 DAS increased by 718.40% and 337.67%, respectively. The trend increased of the biomass was followed by observation at 100 DAS. Yield components including cobs, grain and weight of 100 grains increased by 313.60%, 411.84% and 137.54%, respectively.
