Because of an increasing interest in NaSICON materials as electrolyte materials in all-solid state sodium batteries, their thermal expansion was investigated in this study. The thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) of the Al and Y-substituted NaSICON compositions Na3+2xAlxYxZr2−2xSi2PO12 with 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3 was obtained by dilatometry and compared to the CTE derived from the lattice parameters using high-temperature X-ray diffraction. The difference in CTE obtained from techniques, the influence of sodium content and central metal cation on CTE, as well as other observations such as phase changes are described and rationalized.

A series of ceramics samples belonging to theCeO2-Bi2O3phase system have been prepared via a coprecipitation route. The crystallized phases were obtained by heating the solid precursors at600∘Cfor 6 hours, then quenching the samples. X-ray diffraction analyses show that forx<0.20a solid solutionCe1−xBixO2−x/2with fluorine structure is formed. For x ranging between 0.25 and 0.7, a tetragonalβ′phase coexisting with the FCC solid solution is observed. For x ranging between 0.8 and 0.9, a new tetragonalβphase appears. Theβ′phase is postulated to be a superstructure of theβphase. Finally, close tox=1, the classical monoclinicα Bi2O3structure is observed. Raman spectroscopy confirms the existence of the phase changes as x varies between 0 and 1.

AbstractThe phosphates M0.5+x M′x Zr2−x (PO4)3 (M–Ca, Mn, Co, Sr, Cd, Ba, Pb; M′–Mg, Mn, Co) were synthesized by sol-gel method with the following thermal treatment of reaction mixtures. X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy and electron microprobe analysis showed that the obtained phosphates crystallized in Sc2(WO4)3 (SW) and NaZr2(PO4)3 (NZP) structural types. Both types of crystal structures are based on a framework comprised of octahedra and tetrahedra, the difference between them is fragments orientation. Thermal expansion of the phosphates was studied in the temperature range 20–800°C. Some compounds were found to belong to low-expanding materials (αav ~2·10−6°C−1).

The effect of annealing temperature and external stress on the thermal expansion of a Ti–23Nb–0.7Ta–2Zr alloy were investigated by means of thermal expansion tests under constant load and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Negative thermal expansion (NTE), which is a shrinkage during heating, was observed in both a cold rolled and annealed specimens. The intensity of (200)β peak decreased while that of (211)β peak increased as the annealing temperature increased. The difference in expansion rate between 50 °C and 250 °C is found to decrease with an increasing annealing temperature from 600 °C to 800 °C, above which it kept almost constant. The expansion rate decreased as the applied stress increased.

AbstractAn investigation of the phase changes in a complex aluminum-titanium-hardened nickel-base high-temperature alloy was carried out after solutioning at high temperatures and aging at lower temperatures. The physical distribution and size of the precipitated phases were studied by electron microscopy. X-ray diffraction and fluorescence analyses were carried out on chemically extracted residues. The results of the xtructure changes as well as correlation of some physical properties with the structural changes are presented.

Dilatometry, high-temperature x-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, and differential scanning calorirmetry have been performed on LaGaO3, NdGaO3, PrGaO3, SmAlO3, and LaAlO3 single crystals grown by the Czochralski technique. First order phase transitions have been located at 145°C for LaGaO3 and 785°C for SmAlO3, and ΔH has been measured for the LaGaO3 transition. Second order transitions have been identified for LaGaO3, PrGaO3, NdGaO3, and LaAlO3. The usefulness of these compounds as substrates for high temperature superconducting films is discussed in terms of thermal expansion matching.

A new series of solid solutions Dy2-xGdxMo4O15 (x = 0.0-0.9) were prepared. These compounds all crystallize in monoclinic structure with space group P21/c. The lattice parameters a, b, c and unit cell volumes V increase almost linearly with increasing gadolinium content. The intrinsic thermal expansion coefficients of Dy2-xGdxMo4O15 (x = 0.0 and 0.25) were obtained in the temperature range of 25 to 500°C with high-temperature X-ray diffraction. The correlation between thermal expansion and crystal structure was discussed.
