In recent years, facility management (FM) has adopted many computer technology solutions for building maintenance, such as building information modelling (BIM) and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS). However, maintenance requests management in buildings remains a manual and a time-consuming process that depends on human management. In this paper, a machine-learning algorithm based on natural language processing (NLP) is proposed to classify maintenance requests. This algorithm aims to assist the FM teams in managing day-to-day maintenance activities. A healthcare facility is addressed as a case study in this work. Ten-year maintenance records from the facility contributed to the design and development of the algorithm. Multiple NLP methods were used in this study, and the results reveal that the NLP model can classify work requests with an average accuracy of 78%. Furthermore, NLP methods have proven to be effective for managing unstructured text data.

Today, images are a part of communication between people. However, images are being used to share information by hiding and embedding messages within it, and images that are received through social media or emails can contain harmful content that users are not able to see and therefore not aware of. This paper presents a model for detecting spam on images. The model is a combination of optical character recognition, natural language processing, and the machine learning algorithm. Optical character recognition extracts the text from images, and natural language processing uses linguistics capabilities to detect and classify the language, to distinguish between normal text and slang language. The features for selected images are then extracted using the bag-of-words model, and the machine learning algorithm is run to detect any kind of spam that may be on it. Finally, the model can predict whether or not the image contains any harmful content. The results show that the proposed method using a combination of the machine learning algorithm, optical character recognition, and natural language processing provides high detection accuracy compared to using machine learning alone.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) captures numerous information the life cycle of buildings. Information retrieval is one of fundamental tasks for BIM decision support systems. Currently, most of the BIM retrieval systems focused on querying existing BIM models from a BIM database, seldom studies explore the multi-scale information retrieval from a BIM model. This study proposes a multi-scale information retrieval scheme for BIM jointly using the hierarchical structure of BIM and Natural Language Processing (NLP). Firstly, a BIM Hierarchy Tree (BIH-Tree) model is constructed to interpret the hierarchical structure relations among BIM data according to Industry Foundation Class (IFC) specification. Secondly, technologies of NLP and International Framework for Dictionaries (IFD) are employed to parse and unify the queries. Thirdly, a novel information retrieval scheme is developed to find the multi-scale information associated with the unified queries. Finally, the retrieval method proposed in this study is applied to an engineering case, and the practical results show that the proposed method is effective.

Technology is accelerating innovations in the healthcare domain which has increased people’s standard of living over the years. Here in our project we are making a healthcare chatbot with help of Natural language processing and machine learning algorithm to predict disease. User interacts with the chatbot just like one interacts with his doctor and based on the symptoms provided by users and the chatbot will identify the symptom and predict the disease.

Child physical abuse is a leading cause of traumatic injury and death in children. In 2017, child abuse was responsible for 1688 fatalities in the United States, of 3.5 million children referred to Child Protection Services and 674,000 substantiated victims. While large referral hospitals maintain teams trained in Child Abuse Pediatrics, smaller community hospitals often do not have such dedicated resources to evaluate patients for potential abuse. Moreover, identification of abuse has a low margin of error, as false positive identifications lead to unwarranted separations, while false negatives allow dangerous situations to continue. This context makes the consistent detection of and response to abuse difficult, particularly given subtle signs in young, non-verbal patients. Here, we describe the development of artificial intelligence algorithms that use unstructured free-text in the electronic medical record—including notes from physicians, nurses, and social workers—to identify children who are suspected victims of physical abuse. Importantly, only the notes from time of first encounter (e.g.: birth, routine visit, sickness) to the last record before child protection team involvement were used. This allowed us to develop an algorithm using only information available prior to referral to the specialized child protection team. The study was performed in a multi-center referral pediatric hospital on patients screened for abuse within five different locations between 2015 and 2019. Of 1123 patients, 867 records were available after data cleaning and processing, and 55% were abuse-positive as determined by a multi-disciplinary team of clinical professionals. These electronic medical records were encoded with three natural language processing (NLP) algorithms—Bag of Words (BOW), Word Embeddings (WE), and Rules-Based (RB)—and used to train multiple neural network architectures. The BOW and WE encodings utilize the full free-text, while RB selects crucial phrases as identified by physicians. The best architecture was selected by average classification accuracy for the best performing model from each train-test split of a cross-validation experiment. Natural language processing coupled with neural networks detected cases of likely child abuse using only information available to clinicians prior to child protection team referral with average accuracy of 0.90±0.02 and average area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (ROC-AUC) 0.93±0.02 for the best performing Bag of Words models. The best performing rules-based models achieved average accuracy of 0.77±0.04 and average ROC-AUC 0.81±0.05, while a Word Embeddings strategy was severely limited by lack of representative embeddings. Importantly, the best performing model had a false positive rate of 8%, as compared to rates of 20% or higher in previously reported studies. This artificial intelligence approach can help screen patients for whom an abuse concern exists and streamline the identification of patients who may benefit from referral to a child protection team. Furthermore, this approach could be applied to develop computer-aided-diagnosis platforms for the challenging and often intractable problem of reliably identifying pediatric patients suffering from physical abuse.

The recent wave of developments and research in the field of deep learning and artificial intelligence is causing the border between the intuitive and deterministic domains to be redrawn, especially in computer vision and natural language processing. As designers frequently invoke vision and language in the context of design, this article takes a step back to ask if deep learning’s capabilities might be applied to design workflows, especially in architecture. In addition to addressing this general question, the article discusses one of several prototypes, BIMToVec, developed to examine the use of deep learning in design. It employs techniques like those used in natural language processing to interpret building information models. The article also proposes a homogeneous data format, provisionally called a design pixel, which can store design information as spatial-semantic maps. This would make designers’ intuitive thoughts more accessible to deep learning algorithms while also allowing designers to communicate abstractly with design software.

Abstract This paper presents a comprehensive Tag set as a fundamental component for developing an automated Word Class/Part-of-Speech (PoS) tagging system for the Arabic language. The aim is to develop a standard and comprehensive PoS tag set that based upon PoS classes and Arabic inflectional morphology useful for Linguistics and Natural Language Processing (NLP) developers to extract more linguistic information from it. The tag names in the developed tag set uses terminology from Arabic tradition grammar rather than English grammar. The usability of the presented Tag set has been tested in manual tagging and built up a set of tagged text to serve as a goal corpus used to compare it with the results obtained from the tagger. The tagger has achieved an average accuracy of 90% using the developed detailed tag set.
