The present study explores the exploitation of ladder-like polysilsesquioxanes (PSQs) bearing reactive functional groups in conjunction with SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) to produce UV-curable nanocomposite coatings with increased hydrophobicity and good thermal resistance. In detail, a medium degree regular ladder-like structured poly (methacryloxypropyl) silsesquioxane (LPMASQ) and silica NPs, either naked or functionalized with a methacrylsilane (SiO2@TMMS), were blended and then irradiated in the form of a film. Material characterization evidenced significant modifications of the structural organization of the LPMASQ backbone and, in particular, a rearrangement of the silsesquioxane chains at the interface upon introduction of the functionalized silica NPs. This leads to remarkable thermal resistance and enhanced hydrophobic features in the final nanocomposite. The results suggest that the adopted strategy, in comparison with mostly difficult and expensive surface modification and structuring protocols, may provide tailored functional properties without modifying the surface roughness or the functionalities of silsesquioxanes, but simply tuning their interactions at the hybrid interface with silica fillers.

Introduction: We developed a simple, fast and new method for the Fries rearrangement of aryl esters. Materials and Methods: 4-Hydroxy pyridinium triflate functionalized silica is a very efficient, reusable and economically available catalyst for the Fries rearrangement in solvent-free condition and under microwave irradiation. Results and Discussion: Also, a notable selectivity was observed in the presence of 4-hydroxy pyridinium triflate functionalized silica. Conclusion: Selectivity, shorter reaction time, high yield, and easy work-up are advantages of this synthetic method.

ABSTRACTSix nanocomposite coatings of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), Au, diamond like carbon and MoS2 have been studied by in situ tribometry. The coatings all had a nominal MoS2 content of between 14 and 18 mol%, while the concentrations of the other components were varied. Steady state friction coefficients in both dry (0.04–0.05) and wet sliding conditions (0.06–0.08) were similar for all coatings. However, by in situ tribometry, wear mechanisms were found to differ depending on coating composition and test environment humidity. Friction spiking in high YSZ coatings was identified with local plowing and scoring of the track followed by an extrusion of transfer film material. Trends in coating hardness and modulus are correlated to composition and coating wear processes.
