In this study, a new set of direct numerical simulations is generated and used to examine the influence of mixture composition heterogeneities on the propagation of a premixed iso-octane/air spherical turbulent flame, with a representative chemical description. The dynamic effects of both turbulence and combustion heterogeneities are considered, and their competition is assessed. The results of the turbulent homogeneous case are compared with those of heterogeneous cases which are characterized by multiple stratification length scales and segregation rates in the regime of a wrinkled flame. The comparison reveals that stratification does not alter turbulent flame behaviors such as the preferential alignment of the convex flame front with the direction of the compression. However, we find that the overall flame front propagation is slower in the presence of heterogeneities because of the differential on speed propagation. Furthermore, analysis of different displacement speed components is performed by taking multi-species formalism into account. This analysis shows that the global flame propagation front slows down due to the heterogeneities caused by the reaction mechanism and the differential diffusion accompanied by flame surface density variations. Quantification of the effects of each of these mechanisms shows that their intensity increases with the increase in stratification’s length scale and segregation rate.

Sensitivity to stretch and differential diffusion of chemical species are known to influence premixed flame propagation, even in the turbulent environment where mass diffusion can be greatly enhanced. In this context, it is convenient to characterize flames by their Lewis number (Le), a ratio of thermal-to-mass diffusion. The work reported in this paper describes a study of flame stabilization characteristics when the Le is varied. The test data is comprised of Le ≪ 1 (Hydrogen), Le ≈ 1 (Methane), and Le > 1 (Propane) flames stabilized at various turbulence levels. The experiments were carried out in a Hot exhaust Opposed-flow Turbulent Flame Rig (HOTFR), which consists of two axially-opposed, symmetric turbulent round jets. The stagnation plane between the two jets allows the aerodynamic stabilization of a flame, and clearly identifies fuel influences on turbulent flames. Furthermore, high-speed Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), using oil droplet seeding, allowed simultaneous recordings of velocity (mean and rms) and flame surface position. These experiments, along with data processing tools developed through this study, illustrated that in the mixtures with Le ≪ 1, turbulent flame speed increases considerably compared to the laminar flame speed due to differential diffusion effects, where higher burning rates compensate for the steepening average velocity gradient, and keeps these flames almost stationary as bulk flow velocity increases. These experiments are suitable for validating the ability of turbulent combustion models to predict lifted, aerodynamically-stabilized flames. In the final part of this paper, we model the three fuels at two turbulence intensities using the FGM model in a RANS context. Computations reveal that the qualitative flame stabilization trends reproduce the effects of turbulence intensity, however, more accurate predictions are required to capture the influences of fuel variations and differential diffusion.

In gas turbine operation a turbulent flame is employed. Thus, better understanding of the turbulent flame propagation is the key for further optimisation of turbine combustors and reduction of the environmental footprint. As turbulent flames are exposed to stretch, the effect of flame-stretch interaction must be better understood especially at higher pressures. In present study, turbulent burning velocity of two mixtures, hydrogen/air and propane/air, with negative and positive Ma, respectively are experimentally investigated in fan-stirred explosion vessel. For the investigation an optical laser method is employed based on the Mie-scattering of the laser light by smoke particles. Within this study the influence of initial parameters as initial pressure and turbulence intensity on the flame front propagation is investigated by giving special attention on influence of Ma variation. The experiments were performed at three different pressures 1, 2, 4 bar. The RMS fluctuation velocity was varied in the range of 0–2.77 m/s. The observed results are compared and discussed in detail.

To accurately model the Direct Injection Spark Ignition (DISI) combustion process, it is important to account for the effects of the spark energy discharge process. The proximity of the injected fuel spray and spark electrodes leads to steep gradients in local velocities and equivalence ratios, particularly under cold-start conditions when multiple injection strategies are employed. The variations in the local properties at the spark plug location play a significant role in the growth of the initial flame kernel established by the spark and its subsequent evolution into a turbulent flame. In the present work, an ignition model is presented that is compatible with the G-Equation combustion model, which responds to the effects of spark energy discharge and the associated plasma expansion effects. The model is referred to as the Plasma Velocity on G-surface (PVG) model, and it uses the G-surface to capture the early kernel growth. The model derives its theory from the Discrete Particle Ignition (DPIK) model, which accounts for the effects of electrode heat transfer, spark energy, and chemical heat release from the fuel on the early flame kernel growth. The local turbulent flame speed has been calculated based on the instantaneous location of the flame kernel on the Borghi-Peters regime diagram. The model has been validated against the experimental measurements given by Maly and Vogel,1 and the constant volume flame growth measurements provided by Nwagwe et al.2 Multi-cycle simulations were performed in CONVERGE3 using the PVG ignition model in combination with the G-Equation-based GLR4 model in a RANS framework to capture the combustion characteristics of a DISI engine. Good agreements with the experimental pressure trace and apparent heat-release rates were obtained. Additionally, the PVG ignition model was observed to substantially reduce the sensitivity of the default G-sourcing ignition method employed by CONVERGE.

Differential diffusion effects in premixed combustion are studied in a counter-flow flame experiment for fuel-lean flames of three fuels with different Lewis numbers: methane, propane, and hydrogen. Previous studies of stretched laminar flames show that a maximum reference flame speed is observed for mixtures with Le ≳ 1 at lower flame-stretch values than at extinction, while the reference flame speed for Le ≪ 1 increases until extinction occurs when the flame is constrained by the stagnation point. In this work, counter-flow flame experiments are performed for these same mixtures, building upon the laminar results by using variable high-blockage turbulence-generating plates to generate turbulence intensities from the near-laminar u′/SLo=1 to the maximum u′/SLo achievable for each mixture, on the order of u′/SLo=10. Local, instantaneous reference flamelet speeds within the turbulent flame are extracted from high-speed PIV measurements. Instantaneous flame front positions are measured by Rayleigh scattering. The probability-density functions (PDFs) of instantaneous reference flamelet speeds for the Le ≳ 1 mixtures illustrate that the flamelet speeds are increasing with increasing turbulence intensity. However, at the highest turbulence intensities measured in these experiments, the probability seems to drop off at a velocity that matches experimentally-measured maximum reference flame speeds in previous work. In contrast, in the Le ≪ 1 turbulent flames, the most-probable instantaneous reference flamelet speed increases with increasing turbulence intensity and can, significantly, exceed the maximum reference flame speed measured in counter-flow laminar flames at extinction, with the PDF remaining near symmetric for the highest turbulence intensities. These results are reinforced by instantaneous flame position measurements. Flame-front location PDFs show the most probable flame location is linked both to the bulk flow velocity and to the instantaneous velocity PDFs. Furthermore, hydrogen flame-location PDFs are recognizably skewed upstream as u′/SLo increases, indicating a tendency for the Le ≪ 1 flame brush to propagate farther into the unburned reactants against a steepening average velocity gradient.

The present experimental study focuses on flame characteristics and turbulent flame speeds of lean premixed flames typical for stationary gas turbines. Measurements were performed in a generic combustor at a preheating temperature of 673 K, pressures up to 14.4 bars (absolute), a bulk velocity of 40 m/s, and an equivalence ratio in the range of 0.43–0.56. Turbulence intensities and integral length scales were measured in an isothermal flow field with Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The turbulence intensity (u′) and the integral length scale (LT) at the combustor inlet were varied using turbulence grids with different blockage ratios and different hole diameters. The position, shape, and fluctuation of the flame front were characterized by a statistical analysis of Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence images of the OH radical (OH-PLIF). Turbulent flame speeds were calculated and their dependence on operating conditions (p, φ) and turbulence quantities (u′, LT) are discussed and compared to correlations from literature. No influence of pressure on the most probable flame front position or on the turbulent flame speed was observed. As expected, the equivalence ratio had a strong influence on the most probable flame front position, the spatial flame front fluctuation, and the turbulent flame speed. Decreasing the equivalence ratio results in a shift of the flame front position farther downstream due to the lower fuel concentration and the lower adiabatic flame temperature and subsequently lower turbulent flame speed. Flames operated at leaner equivalence ratios show a broader spatial fluctuation as the lean blow-out limit is approached and therefore are more susceptible to flow disturbances. In addition, because of a lower turbulent flame speed these flames stabilize farther downstream in a region with higher velocity fluctuations. This increases the fluctuation of the flame front. Flames with higher turbulence quantities (u′, LT) in the vicinity of the combustor inlet exhibited a shorter length and a higher calculated flame speed. An enhanced turbulent heat and mass transport from the recirculation zone to the flame root location due to an intensified mixing which might increase the preheating temperature or the radical concentration is believed to be the reason for that.

In the small diffusion limit ε→0, metastable dynamics is studied for the generalized Burgers problemformula hereHere u=u(x, t) and f(u) is smooth, convex, and satisfies f(0)=f′(0)=0. The choice f(u)=u2/2 has been shown previously to arise in connection with the physical problem of upward flame-front propagation in a vertical channel in a particular parameter regime. In this context, the shape y=y(x, t) of the flame-front interface satisfies u=−yx. For this problem, it is shown that the principal eigenvalue associated with the linearization around an equilibrium solution corresponding to a parabolic-shaped flame-front interface is exponentially small. This exponentially small eigenvalue then leads to a metastable behaviour for the time- dependent problem. This behaviour is studied quantitatively by deriving an asymptotic ordinary differential equation characterizing the slow motion of the tip location of a parabolic-shaped interface. Similar metastability results are obtained for more general f(u). These asymptotic results are shown to compare very favourably with full numerical computations.
