Solvent front position extraction procedure was used to prepare biological samples containing selected antihypertensive drugs (ramipril, lercanidipine, indapamide, valsartan, hydrochlorothiazide, perindopril, and nebivolol). Substances separated from the biological matrix components (bovine serum albumin) were quantified by means of liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Sample preparation process was performed with the use of a prototype horizontal chamber with a moving pipette driven by a 3D printer mechanism enabling a controlled eluent flow velocity. Application of this device was advantageous for simultaneous preparation of several samples for further quantitative analysis, with a synchronized reduction of manual operations and solvent consumption. Quantitative results obtained for the majority of the investigated antihypertensive drugs in a complex biological matrix were satisfactory. The values of the %RSD were around 5% for six of the seven substances (with the exception of indapamide). The method exhibits a suitable accuracy (the relative error percentage was below 10% for most drugs). The values of LOD and LOQ were in the range of 1.19 µg/L–8.53 µg/L and 3.61 µg/L–25.8 µg/L, respectively.

In this study, the human exposure to the magnetic field emitted by a wireless power transfer (WPT) system during the static recharging operations of a compact electric vehicle (EV) is evaluated. Specifically, the influence of the posture of realistic anatomical models, both in standing and lying positions, either inside or outside the EV, is considered. Aligned and misaligned coil configurations of the WPT system placed both in the rear and front position of the car floor are considered as well. Compliance with safety standards and guidelines has proven that reference levels are exceeded in the extreme case of a person lying on the floor with a hand close to the WPT coils, whereas the system is always compliant with the basic restrictions, at least for the considered scenarios.

In this study, we investigate a novel application of the photogrammetric monoplotting technique for assessing wildfires. We demonstrate the use of the software program WSL Monoplotting Tool (MPT) to georeference operational oblique aerial wildfire photographs taken during airtanker response in the early stages of fire growth. We located the position of the fire front in georeferenced pairs of photos from five fires taken 31–118 min apart, and calculated the head fire spread distance and head fire rate of spread (HROS). Our example photos were taken 0.7 to 4.7 km from fire fronts, with camera angles of incidence from −19 to −50° to image centre. Using high quality images with detailed landscape features, it is possible to identify fire front positions with high precision; in our example data, the mean 3D error was 0.533 m and the maximum 3D error for individual fire runs was less than 3 m. This resulted in a maximum HROS error due to monoplotting of only ~0.5%. We then compared HROS estimates with predictions from the Canadian Fire Behavior Prediction System, with differences mainly attributed to model error or uncertainty in weather and fuel inputs. This method can be used to obtain observations to validate fire spread models or create new empirical relationships where databases of such wildfire photos exist. Our initial work suggests that monophotogrammetry can provide reproducible estimates of fire front position, spread distance and rate of spread with high accuracy, and could potentially be used to characterize other fire features such as flame and smoke plume dimensions and spotting.

Abstract The Wilkes Subglacial Basin in East Antarctica contains ice equivalent to 3–4 m of global mean sea level rise and is primarily drained by Cook Glacier. Of concern is that recent observations (since the 1970s) show an acceleration in ice speed over the grounding line of both the Eastern and Western portions of Cook Glacier. Here, we use a numerical ice-flow model (Úa) to simulate the instantaneous effects of observed changes at the terminus of Cook Glacier in order to understand the link between these changes and recently observed ice acceleration. Simulations suggest that the acceleration of Cook West was caused by a retreat in calving-front position in the 1970s, potentially enhanced by grounding-line retreat, while acceleration of Cook East was likely caused by ice-shelf thinning and grounding-line retreat in the mid-1990s. Moreover, we show that the instantaneous ice discharge at Cook East would increase by up to 85% if the whole ice shelf is removed and it ungrounds from a pinning point; and that the discharge at Cook West could increase by ~300% if its grounding line retreated by 10 km.

Formant transitions from a high front vowel to a non-high, non-front vowel mimic the formant signature of a canonical [j], resulting in the perception of an acoustic glide (Hogoboom 2020). We ask if listeners may still perceive a glide when canonical formant transitions are absent. We investigated the mapping of an Appalachian English (AE) monophthongal [aɪ] in hiatus sequences, monophthongal [aɪ.a]. If participants map this monophthongal [aɪ] to a high front position, they might perceive a glide that is not supported by the acoustic signal, which we call a phantom glide. Ninety-six participants (45 of which were native AE speakers) heard 30 different English words ending in [i], [ə], or monophthongal [aɪ] (i.e. tree, coma, pie) that had been suffixed with either [-a] or [-ja]. They were asked to identify which suffixed form they heard. Participants in both dialect groups sometimes perceived a glide that was truly absent from the speech stream. In these cases, participants mapped static formants in monophthongal [aɪ.a] stimuli to a diphthongal /aɪ/ with a high front endpoint, causing the perception of the necessary F1 fall and subsequent rise of a [j]. Using recent models of speech processing, which encode both social and acoustic representations of speech (e.g. Sumner et al. 2014), we discuss the mapping of monophthongal [aɪ] to a privileged diphthongal underlying form.

<p>Lack of observation is one of the main limitations for improving model prediction in glaciology. However, over the past few years, the amount of observations from satellites has increased at a phenomenal rate. Hopefully, this amount of data will allow to validate the models and their parameterizations. In addition, data assimilation seems to be an optimal method to combine the model and these frequent observations, allowing to reduce the uncertainties of the model and thus potentially improve the projections. While inverse methods are now common in glaciology to infer uncertain parameters from observed surface velocities acquired at a given date, transient data assimilation algorithms are still under development. Recently, the performance of an Ensemble Kalman Filter has been studied on a synthetic case. Here, the goal of this study is to investigate the feasibility of applying this assimilation scheme on a real case : evolution of Upernavik Isstrøm since 1985 using the open source finite element software Elmer/Ice. To do so, we first need to generate an ensemble of simulations that sample the model uncertainties and to evaluate this ensemble against available observations.</p><p>We first assemble a set of observations that will serve for model setup and validation. In this sense, we have collected ice velocity measurements, from optical and radar source, surface elevation and bed topography, ice front position and surface mass balance that give us a fairly good a priori knowledge of the evolution of Upernavik Isstrøm between 1985 and 2020. These datasets are divided into two parts : one is used to better characterize and set up the initial state of the system, and the other is used to evaluate model outputs.</p><p>Uncertainties in the model comes from different sources: (i) the model parameters, (ii) the initial topography as the surface elevation in 1985 is only partially known, and (iii) the forcings (i.e. the surface mass balance, the ice front position).<br>For the model parameters we take into account uncertainties in the ice rheology by perturbing the Glen’s enhancement factor and by generating an ensemble of friction coefficients for different friction laws using a set of inversions that has been performed for the whole Greenland using present day observations. Using these perturbed parameters and a set of surface mass balance representative of the period we generate and evaluate an ensemble of initial topographies for 1985.</p><p><br>With this ensemble of initial states, we perform transient simulations where the position of glacier terminus and a set of perturbed SMB are prescribed each year. Each simulation is scored with specifically designed metrics in terms of dynamics and geometry using the observations described previously. This analysis allows to evaluate the impact of different sources of uncertainty on the transient simulation. Using the results of this study, we will discuss the capacity of Elmer/Ice to reconstruct the trend of the evolution of Upernavik Isstrøm and the possibility to perform transient data assimilation.</p>

Glaciar Pío XI has advanced and thickened over the past several decades in contrast to the generally retreating and thinning trends seen in other glaciers in the Southern Patagonia Icefield (SPI). To quantify recent changes in ice-front positions and glacier surface elevation over the ablation area of Glaciar Pío XI, we analyzed satellite data acquired from 2000 to 2018. Two major glacier termini, and most of the small outlet glaciers, showed advancing trends, including the largest advance (1,400 m), observed at the southern terminus during the study period. Surface elevation increased by 37.3 ± 0.4 m as a mean over the study area, and the rate of the increase accelerated by 135 ± 10% from Period 1 (2000–2007) to Period 2 (2007–2017/18). Elevation change during Period 1 was only slightly positive except for extraordinary thickening (∼20 m a−1) observed near the southern terminus and one of the outlet glacier fronts, whereas significant thickening (∼2.7 m a−1) occurred over the entire ablation area during Period 2. Satellite imagery showed an emergence of sedimentary mounds in front of the southern terminus, suggesting that reduction in frontal ablation and increasingly compressive flow regime are the main drivers of the recent rapid thickening and advance. Most likely, the influence of the sediment deposition on the southern terminus subsequently propagated to the northern terminus and upper reaches of the glacier. The rate of ice mass increase during the study period was 0.48 ± 0.03 Gt a−1, which corresponds to 4% of the total mass loss from the SPI from 2000 to 2015/16.

Coccidiostats are drugs used against coccidiosis, a common disease among breeding animals. Their widespread application leads to the appearance of their residues in food, which is potentially harmful for human health and life. The European Union has established limits of concentrations of these drugs in premixtures and food. Nowadays, there are many methods for monitoring coccidiostats’ presence in market products, but their frequent weakness is sample preparation. Solvent Front Position Extraction is a planar chromatography-based sample preparation method that allows for effective assay of samples with coccidiostats when coupled with LC-MS/MS. The purpose of this research was to find common conditions for the effective isolation of eight coccidiostats from biological sample components with both lower and higher retention than the substances of interest. The acquired results were used for effective isolation of monensin and salinomycin from the premixture samples and allowed for their quantitative determination. The application of a semi-automatic device for the development of chromatograms positively impacted the results, confirming the effectiveness of the method for determining coccidiostats in biological samples.
