Architectural heritage conservation in recent years has hinged on conventional methods and has failed to recognize innovative methods and emerging technologies. Consequently, in Nigeria, suboptimal conservation work results in the continual deterioration of architectural heritage, leading to the loss of heritage and its values and significance. The study, therefore, sought to examine challenges and prospects for implementing innovative techniques in the conservation of architectural heritage in Nigeria. The study examined three heritage conservation interventions in Nigeria, focusing on the applicability of innovative conservation methods for documentation, diagnosis, and treatment of deterioration of architectural heritage. Questionnaires were administered through purposive sampling to 40 heritage conservation professionals, with 31 (77.5%) completed and returned for analysis. A Cronbach’s alpha reliability test value of 0.76 established the validity of the research instrument. The findings affirmed that heritage professionals have low familiarity (mean value of 2.19) with innovative techniques for conservation of architectural heritage. Of the respondents, 41.9% had gained a minimal level of technical knowledge of how to implement innovative techniques in conservation interventions. Improving the performance of conservation interventions also ranked highly as a potential strength of implementing innovative techniques. Conclusively, there is a need to improve advocacy and training in innovative conservation techniques based on their ability to characterize architectural heritage materials and investigate their chemical composition, microstructure, and morphological features.

The abuse of land is devastating our country: environmental disasters (landslides, floods, mudslides, etc.) are becoming more frequent because of the abandonment of agricultural lands and an inadequate care of the land, particularly in the inland areas. But Calabria, and the province of Reggio Calabria, in particular, has agricultural vocations that makes it unique in the Italian panorama and there could be development opportunities for the region, not only in the agriculture sector but also in the recovery of the historic centers with an innovative use of waste materials coming from the production of bergamot, or citrus, for the restoration of historic buildings and vernacular architecture. From a metropolitan city point of view, we must put an end to the soil consumption in favor of the recovery and the enhancement of endogenous resources, utilizing innovative techniques and innovative methods we can diversify the use of existing resources to make them more productive.

ABSTRACTThis article explores the creation of the system for the conservation of architectural heritage in Northern Ireland, evidencing the struggle for convergence within the UK before 1972. The agency of networked individuals, close state–civil society interrelationships and the innovative actions of conservationist groups in response to legislative and practice inadequacies in the 1960s are discussed. In particular, a series of ‘pre-statutory lists’ are introduced, highlighting the burgeoning interest in industrial archaeology and Victorian architecture in Belfast and the prompt provided to their creation by redevelopment. The efforts of conservationists were eventually successful after the collapse of Devolution in the early 1970s.

Many instructors in engineering faculties believe large classes are not as effective or interactive as teaching small classes. When engineering faculties have increased their student intake due to enrolment growth, this has often led to larger classes. This paper discusses the challenges associated with teaching large engineering class sizes. Innovative techniques and solutions are discussed to enable teaching of large classes to become effective and productive like teaching smaller classes. The paper will describe various methods so that the skills to manage and improve the learning environment in large classes can be adopted as effective alternatives to small class sizes.

This study identified the readiness factors that may create challenges in the use of telemedicine among patients in northern Louisiana with cancer. To identify these readiness factors, the team of investigators developed 19 survey questions that were provided to the patients or to their caregivers. The team collected responses from 147 respondents from rural and urban residential backgrounds. These responses were used to identify the individuals’ readiness for utilising telemedicine through factor analysis, Cronbach’s alpha reliability test, analysis of variance and ordinary least squares regression. The analysis results indicated that the favourable factor (positive readiness item) had a mean value of 3.47, whereas the unfavourable factor (negative readiness item) had a mean value of 2.76. Cronbach’s alpha reliability test provided an alpha value of 0.79. Overall, our study indicated a positive attitude towards the use of telemedicine in northern Louisiana.

<p>The possibility of using geopolymers to fill gaps/lacunae in glazed ceramic tiles (azulejos) has been studied. Since the 15<sup>th</sup> century, glazed ceramic tiles are characteristic elements of the Portuguese architectural heritage and their use as external rendering elements has made them prone to degradation. On the other hand, civil construction is a sector with a high consumption of natural resources and CO<sub>2 </sub>emissions. In order to respond a necessary increase of sustainability in conservation/restoration processes, it is important to create/use sustainable repair materials that also ensure compatibility and durability of interventions. Geopolymers were studied as a potential sustainable and compatible repair material. Two commercial metakaolins ARGICAL-M 1200S and ARGICAL-M 1000 were used as precursors in geopolymer pastes and tested. The purpose of this research was to assess the potential of geopolymers in the restoration of the glazed ceramic tiles, both in the filling of gaps and the bonding of ceramic fragments. The physical, chemical and mineralogical analyses of these materials were performed. Additionally, in order to evaluate possible use in conservation interventions, tile lacunae filling, glazing reintegration and bonding of ceramic fragments were studied. Several tests were performed in order to analyse the compatibility and durability of the designed geopolymers and the ceramic/geopolymer system. The results suggest that the geopolymers had a better performance in the bonding of ceramic fragments and can have potential to be applied in the conservation and restoration of tile facades. Thus, as a general conclusion, it was possible to develop sustainable materials to apply in conservation of buildings facades.</p>

Presented research shows Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology as a highly promising tool for architectural heritage conservation. Analyses of contemporary publications by BIM topic and HBIM (Historic Building Information Modeling), its specific division, are conducted. The usage of modern technology analysis for digitizing monuments along with the outdated ‘manual’ of accounting and passportization methods are executed, and a lack of automation of the above processes is observed. Additionally, the research reveals that during the operational period of historical objects, there was no method of fixing their architectural transformations. The necessity of automation of the abovementioned processes by the capabilities of the BIM technology is emphasized. Automation methods developed utilizing the BIM model properties as a relational database, are described. An example of the method implementation in architectural and construction software applications is given. The case uses the rules of filling in the state accounting card of Ukraine. Nonetheless, the automatic formation of a document like this by the standards of any country is underscored.

The research deals with the specific features of developing intercultural sensitivity in students of Linguistics in a non- linguistic environment. The paper comprises scientific literature analysis on intercultural sensitivity and the factors of its development. Chen and Starosta's five-factor Intercultural Sensitivity Scale, supplemented by a questionnaire, was employed to measure intercultural sensitivity of 1st, 2nd, and 3d year students majoring in Linguistics. The calculations employed the methods of statistical processing of Student T-test and Fisher criterion. The intercultural sensitivity of students was above average (mean value = 89.47), whereas the increase of all components of intercultural sensitivity, except "Interaction confidence", correlated with the level of foreign language proficiency. In addition, senior students revealed more respect for cultural differences, though they were less confident than junior ones. Moreover, the difference between these two components increased from the 1st year to the3d year of study. Finally, interaction confidence increased if students had travelled overseas and had an experience of interaction with culturally different counterparts. The results and conclusions can be used for the design of programs and training courses for translators and teachers of foreign languages in a non-linguistic environment.
