Instantaneous mega-traffic flow has long been one of the major challenges in the management of mega-cities. It is difficult for the public transportation system to cope directly with transient mega-capacity flows, and the uneven spatiotemporal distribution of demand is the main cause. To this end, this paper proposed a customized shuttle bus transportation model based on the “boarding-transfer-alighting” framework, with the goal of minimizing operational costs and maximizing service quality to address mega-transit demand with uneven spatiotemporal distribution. The fleet application is constructed by a pickup and delivery problem with time window and transfer (PDPTWT) model, and a heuristic algorithm based on Tabu Search and ALNS is proposed to solve the large-scale computational problem. Numerical tests show that the proposed algorithm has the same accuracy as the commercial solution software, but has a higher speed. When the demand size is 10, the proposed algorithm can save 24,000 times of time. In addition, 6 reality-based cases are presented, and the results demonstrate that the designed option can save 9.93% of fleet cost, reduce 45.27% of vehicle waiting time, and 33.05% of passenger waiting time relative to other existing customized bus modes when encountering instantaneous passenger flows with time and space imbalance.

Online car-hailing services are becoming a key component of the public transportation system, despite there being some certain risks, especially default risk. Turning to the evolutionary game method, this research constructed an evolutionary game model of online car-hailing platform, and then analyzed the equilibrium state of three scenarios (i.e., no supervision, internal supervision of platform enterprises, and external supervision of regulators), followed by carrying out a simulation. The results showed that to realize the evolution stability strategies (ESS) of default risk control, a strong credit constraint or the establishment of a coordinated supervision mode with appropriate intensity are needed. On this basis, this research puts forward the coordinated “platform enterprise + regulator” supervision mode, as well as the following four specific strategies: Promoting the construction of a credit system, strengthening the construction of laws and regulations, establishing a service process control mechanism, and introducing innovative regulatory means.

Passenger satisfaction is an important factor that affects the choice of travel modes for municipalities, especially in big cities. This evaluation is an important task for managers when they are considering improving the competitiveness of the public transportation system. However, passenger satisfaction evaluation is difficult as the information provided by passengers is often vague, imprecise, and uncertain. This paper aims to propose a new method, using Pythagorean fuzzy sets and multi-objective optimization by a ratio analysis plus full multiplicative form method (MULTIMOORA), to evaluate the passenger satisfaction level of the public transportation system under large group environment. The former is employed to represent the satisfaction assessments of rail transit network provided by passengers. The latter is extended and used to determine the passenger satisfaction levels of rail transit lines. In addition, a combination weighting method is suggested to compute the relative weights of evaluation criteria. A case study of the rail transit network in Shanghai is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed passenger satisfaction evaluation method. The result shows that the new method proposed in this study can not only model passengers’ satisfaction evaluation information with more uncertainties, but also determine more reasonable and credible satisfaction levels of rail transit lines.

This paper assesses the operational data of a public transportation system, using the Bus Rapid Transit in Lagos State as a case study. Demographic data was collected through the administration of questionnaires to the commuters; this was carried out to observe variations in the population of the commuters from different perspectives. Some other categories of data were collected which include boarding and alighting, headway, arrival rate of commuters, waiting time of commuters and travel time data. These data were presented and analysed with MS Excel and Minitab statistical softwares. Results from the boarding and alighting data showed bus stops with high flux of commuters, these were at Ojota, Ketu, Mile 12, Costain, CMS and TBS. Probability distribution charts were prepared to analyze the remaining sets of data. This was carried out to study the distribution and consistency of the data. Coefficients of variation for the data were also estimated to study the variability of the data. From the study, the data followed normal distribution and they were consistent such that they can be used for further analysis of the system. It can be concluded that the distribution depicts the real situation at the study location. Thus, bus stops with high density of commuters should be provided with more buses so as to reduce the waiting time of commuters.
