This paper conducts coupled Eulerian–Lagrangian (CEL) analysis to characterize the model uncertainty of using the cylindrical shear method (CSM) to predict the pullout capacity of helical anchors in cohesive soils. The model factor M is adopted to represent the model uncertainty, which is equal to the value of measured capacity divided by estimated solution. The model factor Mcel can be considered to be a random variable with a lognormal distribution, and its mean value and coefficient of variation (COV) are 1.02 and 0.1, respectively. Correction factor η is introduced when comparing CSM and CEL, which is found to be influenced by input parameters. The dependence on input parameters is removed by performing regression analysis and the regression equation f is obtained. Substituting the regression equation f into the original CSM constitutes the modified CSM (MCSM), and the model factor of MCSM can be modeled as a random variable with a lognormal distribution, and its mean value and COV are 1.02 and 0.13, respectively. Finally, 13 filed tests are collected to compare the prediction accuracy, the results show that the prediction error range of MCSM is mostly within 15%. The present findings might be helpful for engineers and designers to estimate the pullout capacity of helical anchors in cohesive soils more confidently.

Consider an aggregate arrival process A N obtained by multiplexing N on-off processes with exponential off periods of rate λ and subexponential on periods τon. As N goes to infinity, with λN → Λ, A N approaches an M/G/∞ type process. Both for finite and infinite N, we obtain the asymptotic characterization of the arrival process activity period. Using these results we investigate a fluid queue with the limiting M/G/∞ arrival process A t ∞ and capacity c. When on periods are regularly varying (with non-integer exponent), we derive a precise asymptotic behavior of the queue length random variable Q t P observed at the beginning of the arrival process activity periods where ρ = 𝔼A t ∞ < c; r (c ≤ r) is the rate at which the fluid is arriving during an on period. The asymptotic (time average) queue distribution lower bound is obtained under more general assumptions regarding on periods than regular variation. In addition, we analyse a queueing system in which one on-off process, whose on period belongs to a subclass of subexponential distributions, is multiplexed with independent exponential processes with aggregate expected rate 𝔼e t . This system is shown to be asymptotically equivalent to the same queueing system with the exponential arrival processes being replaced by their total mean value 𝔼e t .

Consider an aggregate arrival process AN obtained by multiplexing N on-off processes with exponential off periods of rate λ and subexponential on periods τon. As N goes to infinity, with λN → Λ, AN approaches an M/G/∞ type process. Both for finite and infinite N, we obtain the asymptotic characterization of the arrival process activity period.Using these results we investigate a fluid queue with the limiting M/G/∞ arrival process At∞ and capacity c. When on periods are regularly varying (with non-integer exponent), we derive a precise asymptotic behavior of the queue length random variable QtP observed at the beginning of the arrival process activity periods where ρ = 𝔼At∞ < c; r (c ≤ r) is the rate at which the fluid is arriving during an on period. The asymptotic (time average) queue distribution lower bound is obtained under more general assumptions regarding on periods than regular variation. In addition, we analyse a queueing system in which one on-off process, whose on period belongs to a subclass of subexponential distributions, is multiplexed with independent exponential processes with aggregate expected rate 𝔼et. This system is shown to be asymptotically equivalent to the same queueing system with the exponential arrival processes being replaced by their total mean value 𝔼et.

This paper shows a characterization of the organic and inorganic fraction of river waters (Tiber and Marta) and ores/soil samples collected in the Northern Latium region of Italy for evaluating the anthropogenic/natural source contribution to the environmental pollution of this area. For organic compounds, organochloride volatile compounds in Tiber and Marta rivers were analyzed by two different clean-up methods (i.e., liquid–liquid extraction and static headspace) followed by gas chromatography–electron capture detector (GC-ECD) analysis. The results show very high concentrations of bromoform (up to 1.82 and 3.2 µg L−1 in Tiber and Marta rivers, respectively), due to the presence of greenhouse crops, and of chloroform and tetrachloroethene, due to the presence of handicrafts installations. For the qualitative and quantitative assessment of the inorganic fraction, it is highlighted the use of a nuclear analytical method, instrumental neutron activation analysis, which allows having more information as possible from the sample without performing any chemical-physical pretreatment. The results have evidenced high levels of mercury (mean value 88.6 µg g−1), antimony (77.7 µg g−1), strontium (12,039 µg g−1) and zinc (103 µg g−1), whereas rare earth elements show levels similar to the literature data. Particular consideration is drawn for arsenic (414 µg g−1): the levels found in this paper (ranging between 1 and 5100 µg g−1) explain the high content of such element (as arsenates) in the aquifer, a big issue in this area.

Maximum stability of a distribution with respect to a positive integer random variable N is defined by the property that the type of distribution is not changed when considering the maximum value of N independent observations. The logistic distribution is proved to be the only symmetric distribution which is maximum stable with respect to each member of a sequence of positive integer random variables assuming value 1 with probability tending to 1. If a distribution is maximum stable with respect to such a sequence and minimum stable with respect to another, then it must be logistic, loglogistic or ‘backward' loglogistic. The only possible sample size distributions in these cases are geometric.

We have investigated the geologic features of the lower Cambrian-aged Niutitang Shale in the northwestern Hunan province of South China. Our results indicate that the Niutitang Shale has abundant and highly mature algal kerogen with total organic carbon (TOC) content ranging from 0.6% to 18.2%. The equivalent vitrinite reflectance (equal-Ro) value is between 2.5% and 4.3%. Mineral constituents are dominated by quartz and clay. The average quartz content (62.8%) is much higher than that of clay minerals (26.1%), and this suggests a high brittleness index. Organic-matter pores, interparticle pores, intraparticle pores, interlaminated fractures, and structural fractures are all well developed. The porosity ranges from 0.6% to 8.8%, with an average of 4.8%, whereas the permeability varies from 0.0018 to [Formula: see text] (microdarcy) (averaging [Formula: see text]). The porosity of TOC- and clay-rich shale samples is generally higher than that of quartz-rich shale samples. The gas adsorption capacity of the Niutitang Shale varies from 2.26 to [Formula: see text], with a mean value of [Formula: see text]. The TOC content appears to significantly influence gas adsorption capacity. In general, TOC-rich samples exhibit a much higher adsorption capacity than TOC-poor samples.

Recent investigations by F. Yates (1) in agricultural statistics suggest a mathematical problem which may be formulated as follows. A function f(x) is known to be of bounded variation and Lebesgue integrable on the range −∞ < x < ∞, and its integral over this range is to be determined. In default of any knowledge of the position of the non-negligible values of the function the best that can be done is to calculate the infinite sumfor some suitable δ and an arbitrary origin t, where s ranges over all possible positive and negative integers including zero. S is evidently of period δ in t and ranges over all its values as t varies from 0 to δ. Previous writers (Aitken (2), p. 45, and Kendall (3)) have examined the resulting errors for fixed t. (They considered only symmetrical functions, and supposed one of the lattice points to be located at the centre.) Here we do not restrict ourselves to symmetrical functions and consider the likely departure of S(t) from J (the required integral) when t is a random variable uniformly distributed in (0, δ). It will be shown that S(t) is distributed about J as mean value, with a variance which will be evaluated as a function of δ, the scale of subdivision.

Thalassemia is common inherited disorder among humans, and they represent a major public health problem in many areas of the world. The study aimed to the measurement of hematological characterization of beta-thalassemia in Sudanese patients. Blood samples from 61 beta-thalassemic patients were collected after written consent form obtained from all participants. The frequency of adults (>18 years) was 45 (73.8%) and children’s (<18 years) was 16 (26.2%); the frequency of male was 27 (44.3%) and 34 were female (55.7%). Hemoglobin estimation and red cell indices were carried out using the automatic blood cell counter Sysmex K × 21N. The results showed that Hb and RBCs indices were varied between mild to moderate and severe decreasing, hemoglobin concentration (Hb) with the mean value of 9.6 g/dL, with minimum value of 6.1 g/dl and maximum of 11.9 g/dl, while RBCs were increased in all patients, mean value 5.2 c/l, mean corpuscular volume mean was 58.9 fl, hematocrit was 30.4, mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) 18.8 pg, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) was 31.7pg, and RDW was 18.8%. The method used for hemoglobin electrophoresis was capillary electrophoresis, Hb pattern shows increased HbA2 and HbF, the mean of HbA is 78.3%, HbF is 2.3%, and HbA2 is 6.5% with the min. value of 3.6% and max. of 12.2%. While the mean of serum iron was 82.75 μg/dl, 7 patients showed low level, 19 high level, and 35 were normal level. Comparison of hematological analysis (HbA2) in thalassemic patients coexisted with iron deficiency and without result was insignificant difference (p=0.645), this result disagrees with references that say iron deficiency masking HbA2. Nevertheless, the association between HbA2 and HbF revealed a statistically significant difference (p<0.013) and HbA2 with Hb was insignificant (p=0.260).

This paper further investigates the Talent versus Luck (TvL) model described by [Pluchino et al. Talent versus luck: The role of randomness in success and failure, Adv. Complex Syst. 21 (2018) 1850014] which models the relationship between ‘talent’ and ‘luck’ on the impact of an individuals career. It is shown that the model is very sensitive to both random sampling and the choice of value for the input parameters. Running the model repeatedly with the same set of input parameters gives a range of output values of over 50% of the mean value. The sensitivity of the inputs of the model is analyzed using a variance-based approach based upon generating Sobol sequences of quasi-random numbers. When using the model to look at the talent associated with an individual who has the maximum capital over a model run it has been shown that the choice for the standard deviation of the talent distribution contributes to 67% of the model variability. When investigating the maximum amount of capital returned by the model the probability of a lucky event at any given epoch has the largest impact on the model, almost three times more than any other individual parameter. Consequently, during the analysis of the model results one must keep in mind the impact that only small changes in the input parameters can have on the model output.

Watershed characterization is the first step in the sustainable management of    watershed resources. Morphometric analysis of a watershed using Digital Elevation Model (DEM) provides a quantitative description of the drainage system which is an important aspect   of the characterization of watersheds. The study was conducted in Nilona micro-watershed covering an area of 1297.35 ha in Darwha tehsil of Yavatmal district, Maharashtra. The terrain attributes and drainage configuration were derived from the Cartosat-1 data, 10m resolution Digital Terrain Model (DTM) using ArcGIS. Surface soil samples of 118 locations were collected from grid points located at regular interval of 325 m. The digital terrain analysis  showed that slope varies from 0 to 45.9 percent, with a mean value of 4.5%. Most of the area of Nilona micro-watershed was classified as gentle sloping. Profile curvature   varies from -5.1 to 4.6 m m-1, respectively indicating the coexistence of erosive as well  as depositional landforms. Overall, the study documents the utility of   site-specific modeling and geo-statistical interpolation based predictive mapping for watershed planning.
