Tilapia (Oreochromis spp.) have significant potential for aquaculture production around the world. There is an increasing demand among tilapia producers for strains with higher yields and for fish that can survive in highly saline water. Novel strains and consistent seedstock are critically important objectives for sustainable aquaculture, but for these required targets there is still not enough progress. Therefore, this study describes the genome sequence of Oreochromis spilurus to support the seawater culture of tilapia. The draft genome is 0.768 Gb (gigabases), with a scaffold N50 (the genome (50%) is in fragments of this length) of 0.22 Mb (megabases). The GC content is 40.4%, the heterozygosity rate is 0.35%, and the repeat content is 47.97%. The predicted protein-coding peptide encoded 51,642 and predicted 10,641 protein-coding genes in the O. spilurus genome. The predicted antimicrobial peptides were 262, bringing new hope for further research. This whole genome sequence provides new insights for biomedical and molecular research and will also improve the breeding of tilapia for high yields, resistance to disease, and adaptation to salt water.

Combined Nanopore and Illumina whole-genome sequencing of a French Guianan Mycobacterium ulcerans (Buruli ulcer agent) clinical isolate yielded a 5.12-Mbp genome with a 65.5% GC content, 5,215 protein-coding genes, and 51 predicted RNA genes. This publicly available M. ulcerans whole-genome sequence from a strain isolated in South America is closely related to M. ulcerans subsp. liflandii.

ABSTRACT Microcystis aeruginosa is a globally well-known bloom-forming cyanobacterium. An improved draft whole-genome sequence of M. aeruginosa NIES-298, which is a microcystin-producing strain isolated from Lake Kasumigaura, Japan, is published here. The genome comprises approximately 5.0 Mbp, with an average G+C content of 42.6% and 4,537 predicted protein-coding genes.

This report describes the draft genome sequence of S. condimenti strain F-2 T (DSM 11674), a potential starter culture. The genome assembly comprised 2,616,174 bp with 34.6% GC content. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first documentation that reports the whole-genome sequence of S. condimenti.

ABSTRACTBamboos are important non-timber forest plants widely distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa, America, and Pacific islands. They comprise the Bambusoideae in the grass family (Poaceae), including approximately 1,700 described species in 127 genera. In spite of the widespread uses of bamboo for food, construction and bioenergy, the gene repertoire of bamboo still remains largely unexplored. Raddia distichophylla (Schrad. ex Nees) Chase, belonging to the tribe Olyreae (Bambusoideae, Poaceae), is diploid herbaceous bamboo with only slightly lignified stems. In this study, we report a draft genome assembly of the approximately ∼589 Mb whole-genome sequence of R. distichophylla with a contig N50 length of 86.36 Kb. Repeated sequences account for ∼49.08% of the genome, of which LTR retrotransposons occupy ∼35.99% of whole genome. A total of 30,763 protein-coding genes were annotated in the R. distichophylla genome with an average transcript size of 2,887 bp. Access to this herbaceous bamboo genome sequence will provide novel insights into biochemistry, molecular-assisted breeding programs and germplasm conservation for bamboo species world-wide.

ABSTRACT Bacillus cereus AR156 was originally isolated from the forest soil of Zhenjiang, a city in China. To shed new light on the molecular mechanisms underlying the biological control of soilborne pathogens, the whole genome of this strain was sequenced. Here, we report the draft genome sequence of this strain, consisting of a single circularized contig measuring 5.66 Mb, with an average GC content of 35.5% and 5,367 open reading frames.

ABSTRACTWe report here the whole-genome sequence ofNostoc cycadaestrain WK-1, which was isolated from cyanobacterial colonies growing in the coralloid roots of the gymnospermCycas revoluta. It can provide valuable resources to study the mutualistic relationships and the syntrophic metabolisms between the cyanobacterial symbiont and the host plant,C. revoluta.
