A DNase-producing Bacillus pacificus strain was isolated, and the whole-genome sequence is reported in this paper. The draft genome sequence of Bacillus pacificus KVCMST-8A-12 constitutes 2.4 Gbp of raw reads, with a GC content of 35.24%. In total, 5,661 protein-coding genes, 64 tRNA genes, and 4 rRNA genes were predicted.

Protease constitutes the major group of catalytic enzymes which is involved in hydrolyzing peptide bond of proteins. Marine sediment sample were collected and protease producing bacterial isolates were identified by using casein as a substrate. The organisms were characterized by biochemical test and identified as Bacillus sp. In order to check for the production of protease enzyme, quantitative protease assay and Lowry’s method of protein estimation was carried out. The crude extract of protease was subjected for blood stain removal activity and the enzyme proved to be efficient which removed the stain in 15 min. The purpose of the current study is to isolate, identify, characterize and to carry out applications of protease enzyme from marine bacteria isolated from mangrove sediment samples.

A novel Gram-stain-positive, catalase-positive, oxidase-negative, aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain YIM M12148T, was isolated from a marine sediment sample collected from the Indian Ocean. The strain grew optimally at 28 °C, pH 8.0 and in the presence of 1–3 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain YIM M12148T belongs to the genus Gulosibacter , with the highest sequence similarity to Gulosibacter faecalis NBRC 15706T (96.12 %). The cell-wall sugars of strain YIM M12148T were rhamnose, ribose, glucose and mannose. The predominant isoprenoid quinones were MK-8 and MK-9. The polar lipids consisted of major amounts of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, one unknown phospholipid and one unknown lipid. Major fatty acids (>5 % of the total) of the novel isolate were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C13 : 0 and anteiso-C13 : 0. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain YIM M12148T was 67.15 mol%. On the basis of genotypic and phenotypic data, it is apparent that strain YIM M12148T represents a novel species of the genus Gulosibacter , for which the name Gulosibacter sediminis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YIM M12148T (=KCTC 29660T=DSM 29154T).

An aerobic, Gram-stain-negative bacterium, designated CLL7-20T, was isolated from a marine sediment sample from offshore of Changyi, Shandong Province, China. Cells of strain CLL7-20T were rod-shaped, motile with one or more polar flagella, and grew optimally at pH 7.0, at 28 °C and with 3 % (w/v) NaCl. The principal fatty acids of strain CLL7-20T were C16 : 0 and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c/C16 : 1 ω6c). The main polar lipids of strain CLL7-20T were phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylglycerol (PG), diphosphatidylglycerol (DPG) and an unidentified aminolipid (AL). Strain CLL7-20T contained Q-9 as the major respiratory quinone. The G+C content of its genomic DNA was 56.2 mol%. Phylogenetically, strain CLL7-20T branched within the genus Marinobacter , with M. daqiaonensis YCSA40T being its closest phylogenetic relative (96.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), followed by M. sediminum R65T (96.6 %). Average nucleotide identity and in silico DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain CLL7-20T and the closest related reference strains were 73.2% and 19.8 %, respectively. On the basis of its phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, we suggest that strain CLL7-20T (=MCCC 1A14855T=KCTC 72664T) is the type strain of a novel species in the genus Marinobacter , for which the name Marinobacter changyiensis sp. nov. is proposed. Based on the genomic analysis, siderophore genes were found from strain CLL7-20T, which indicate its potential as a promising alternative to chemical fertilizers in iron-limitated environments such as saline soils.

Chemical profiling of the Streptomyces sp. strain SUD119, which was isolated from a marine sediment sample collected from a volcanic island in Korea, led to the discovery of three new metabolites: donghaecyclinones A–C (1–3). The structures of 1–3 were found to be rearranged, multicyclic, angucyclinone-class compounds according to nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS) analyses. The configurations of their stereogenic centers were successfully assigned using a combination of quantum mechanics–based computational methods for calculating the NMR shielding tensor (DP4 and CP3) as well as electronic circular dichroism (ECD) along with a modified version of Mosher’s method. Donghaecyclinones A–C (1–3) displayed cytotoxicity against diverse human cancer cell lines (IC50: 6.7–9.6 μM for 3).
