The paper presents a finite element investigation of the effect of material composition and the constituents’ interaction on the tensile behavior of strain-hardening cement-based composites (SHCC) both with and without textile reinforcement. The input material parameters for the SHCC and continuous reinforcement models, as well for their bond, were adopted from reference experimental investigations. The textile reinforcement was discretized by truss elements in the loaded direction only, with the constitutive relationships simulating a carbon and a polymer textile, respectively. For realistic simulation of macroscopic tensile response and multiple cracking patterns in hybrid fiber-reinforced composites subjected to tension, a multi-scale and probabilistic approach was adopted. SHCC was simulated using the smeared crack model, and the input constitutive law reflected the single-crack opening behavior. The probabilistic definition and spatial fluctuation of matrix strength and tensile strength of the SHCC enabled realistic multiple cracking and fracture localization within the loaded model specimens. Two-dimensional (2D) simulations enabled a detailed material assessment with reasonable computational effort and showed adequate accuracy in predicting the experimental findings in terms of macroscopic stress–strain properties, extent of multiple cracking, and average crack width. Besides material optimization, the model is suitable for assessing the strengthening performance of hybrid fiber-reinforced composites on structural elements.

A series of hybrid fiber-reinforced composites were prepared with polyimide fiber and carbon fiber as the reinforcement and epoxy resin as the matrix. The influence of stacking sequence on the Charpy impact and flexural properties of the composites as well as the failure modes were studied. The results showed that hybrid fiber-reinforced composites yielded nearly 50% increment in Charpy impact strength compared with the ones reinforced by carbon fiber. The flexural performance was significantly improved compared with those reinforced solely by polyimide fibers and was greatly affected by the stacking sequence. The specimens with compressive sides distributed with carbon fiber possessed higher flexural strength, while those holding a sandwich-like structure with carbon fiber filling between the outer layers displayed a higher flexural modulus.

For future generation, to keep the world green, the cognizance on natural fiber increases. The natural fiber-reinforced composites have an advantage of being lightweight, renewable, biodegradable, and cheap, eco-friendly. So there is a need to investigate the potential of natural fibers and their composites, which can be used in highly demanding situations. An attempt has been made in present work to explore the possible use of a variety of wild grown fibers in nature in the development of new composites for load carrying structures. This article is detailed about the extraction process of natural fibers and characterization of natural fiber-reinforced composites. The reinforced composites made by the use of Tamarindus Indica (Tamarind) fibers with epoxy and bisphenol resin. The experimental investigations of the natural fiber composites were carried out by means of Scanning Electron Microscope and the mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural, compression and hardness properties of the composites without chemically treated fibers were reported.
