In the present work, fibers based on heat-resistant amorphous polyimide brand Ultem-1000 were prepared by melt extrusion. Vapor-grown carbon nanofibers (VGCFs) and single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were used to increase the mechanical characteristics of the polymer fibers. The fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermophysical and mechanical tensile analysis. SEM study revealed very good distribution of the carbon nanofillers throughout the polyimide fiber volume. The mechanical testing of the unoriented nanocomposite fibers showed that the introduction of VGCFs or SWCNTs led to an increase in tensile strength and modulus. High-temperature drawing allows obtaining polyimide nanocomposite fibers with significantly increased mechanical properties (»300 MPa for strength and »4.6 GPa for modulus).

In this paper, a resin with high adhesion, easy curing, good flexibility, and high temperature resistance was prepared from polyimide fiber paper. First, in order to improve the toughness and curability of impregnating resin, epoxy resin was modified by addition of vinyl silicone resin. Subsequently, ternary resin with high temperature stability was obtained by polyimide resin addition. Among the investigated conditions, the optimal additive amount of vinyl silicone resin and polyimide resin was 30% and 5%, respectively. The prepared ternary resin has better toughness, crosslinking degree, high temperature stability (5% mass loss at 339.2 °C) and no obvious glass transition at high temperature. Finally, the polyimide fiber paper-based composite material was impregnated with modified epoxy resin and ternary resin, respectively. The results shows that the paper-based composite material impregnated with modified epoxy resin has a better fiber bonding degree, a smooth surface, and contact angle could reach up to 148.71°. Meanwhile, the paper-based composite material impregnated with ternary resin has good high temperature resistance, and the tensile index of the paper-based composite material could reach up to 35.1 N·m/g at 200 °C.

A series of hybrid fiber-reinforced composites were prepared with polyimide fiber and carbon fiber as the reinforcement and epoxy resin as the matrix. The influence of stacking sequence on the Charpy impact and flexural properties of the composites as well as the failure modes were studied. The results showed that hybrid fiber-reinforced composites yielded nearly 50% increment in Charpy impact strength compared with the ones reinforced by carbon fiber. The flexural performance was significantly improved compared with those reinforced solely by polyimide fibers and was greatly affected by the stacking sequence. The specimens with compressive sides distributed with carbon fiber possessed higher flexural strength, while those holding a sandwich-like structure with carbon fiber filling between the outer layers displayed a higher flexural modulus.
