Amongst various intermetallic shape memory alloys (SMAs), nickel–titanium-based SMAs (NiTi) are known for their unique elastocaloric property. This widely used shape remembering material demonstrates excellent mechanical and electrical properties with superior corrosion resistance and super-long fatigue life. The straight-drawn wire form of NiTi has a maximum restorable strain limit of ~4%. However, a maximum linear strain of ~20% can be attained in its coil spring structure. Various material/mechanical engineers have widely exploited this superior mechanic characteristic and stress-triggered heating/cooling efficiency of NiTi to design smart engineering structures, especially in actuator technologies. This short technical note reflects the characteristics of the NiTi coil spring structure with its phase transformations and thermal transformation properties. The micro-actuators based on NiTi have been found to be possible, suggesting uses from biomedical to advanced high-tech applications. In recent years, the technical advancements in modular robotic systems involving NiTi-based SMAs have gained speculative commercial interest.

Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) are active metallic materials classified as “smart” or “intelligent” materials along with piezoelectric ceramic and polymers, electro-active plastics, electro-rheological and magneto-rheological fluids and others. SMAs show a multitude of different and dependent properties interesting for technological applications. These properties depend on the peculiar deformation mechanisms, accounting for the so-called shape memory effect. SMAs are nowadays used in quite different fields, like thermo-mechanical devices, anti-loosening systems, biomedical applications, mechanical damping systems, in some cases employed for large scale civil engineering structures. These multifunctional materials can be naturally considered as sensor-actuator elements demonstrating large possibilities for applications in high-tech smart systems. The use of SMAs in actuators offers an excellent technological opportunity to develop reliable, robust, simple and lightweight elements within structures or as stand-alone components that can represent an alternative to electro-magnetic actuators commonly used in several fields of industrial applications, such as automotive, appliances, consumer electronics and aerospace. NiTi-based SMAs demonstrated to have the best combination of properties, especially in terms of the amount of work output per material volume and the large amount of recoverable stress and strain. However, there are several limiting factors to a widespread diffusion of SMAs to technological fields. For instance, SMAs display a critical dependence of the shape-memory related properties, like transition temperatures, on their actual composition. For this reason, a great care in the production steps, mainly based on casting processes, is required. Another critical aspect, that is to be considered when dealing with SMAs, is the strong influence of their thermo-mechanical history on their properties. This may disclose interesting perspectives of application to smart devices in which different aspects of the shape memory phenomenology, like one and two way shape memory effect, pseudoelasticity, damping capacity, etc., are used. Last, but not least, one of the most debated aspects around NiTi alloys is microcleanliness. This concept is becoming increasingly important as the industrial market moves to smaller, lower profile devices with thinner structures. In this work a general overview about the peculiar behavior of NiTi alloys along with their main issues, the shape memory components under development, and the main efforts and directions for materials improvement will be presented and discussed. A bird’s-eye view on the future opportunities of NiTi-based shape memory actuators for industrial applications will also be given.

Nickel–titanium alloys are the most widely used shape memory alloys due to their outstanding shape memory effect and superelasticity. Additive manufacturing has recently emerged in the fabrication of shape memory alloy but despite substantial advances in powder-based techniques, less attention has been focused on wire-based additive manufacturing. This work reports on the preliminary results for the process-related microstructural and phase transformation changes of Ni-rich nickel–titanium alloy additively manufactured by wire-based electron beam freeform fabrication. To study the feasibility of the process, a simple 10-layer stack structure was successfully built and characterized, exhibiting columnar grains and achieving one-step reversible martensitic–austenitic transformation, thus showing the potential of this additive manufacturing technique for processing shape memory alloys.

Shape memory based high performance nickel-titanium alloy particles were embedded by friction stir processing in graded concentration on the surface of light weight commercially pure magnesium cast plates. The novel functionally graded material so developed was analyzed for microhardness evolution and vibration damping effect. The nickel-titanium alloy particles were filled in a 2.5 wide × 3 mm deep slot and embedded on the surface by friction stir processing. A shallower slot 2.5 wide × 1.5 mm deep was milled over the previously embedded surface in which nickel-titanium alloy powder was again filled and embedded on the surface by second pass friction stir processing. This sequence of pass created the graded variation in nickel-titanium alloy concentration. The so fabricated functionally graded material was cut out from the plate and it was hot-forged to 2/3 thickness and subsequently quenched. The microstructural examination confirmed homogeneous dispersion of nickel-titanium alloy particles and clear interface between high and low concentration regions. The microhardness confirmed a uniform graded variation in hardness. The vibration damping tests confirm considerable improvement in the damping capacity of the fabricated functionally graded material.

Abstract Background: To explore the role of nickel-titanium(NiTi) shape memory alloy embracing fixator in determination of implantation angle of hip tumor prosthesis stem and analyze its efficacy. Methods: 36 patients with proximal femur tumor were treated with extended tumor resection and prosthetic replacement. 14 patients received prosthetic replacements with the embracing fixators fixing between the junction of the prosthesis stem and the femur temporarily, while the other 22 patients received the same replacements but without the fixators. Following aspects were compared: occurrence of complications, limb function and active hip ROM.Results: There are fewer cases of hip dislocation in the group received prosthetic replacements with the use of embracing fixators. Occurrence of deep infection presented no difference between the two groups. Better limb function and higher active range of motion (ROM) on abduction or flexion were also found in the group using embracing fixators. Conclusion: Ni-Ti shape memory alloy embracing fixator plays a key part in assisting the accurate implantation angle of the prosthesis stem in the prosthetic replacement. The prosthesis stem can be adjusted to the optimal angle with the help of the embracing fixator. Patients have lower chance of dislocation, better limb function, and higher active hip ROM. Trial registration: retrospectively registered.
