The application of microchannel heat exchangers is of great significance in industrial fields due to their advantages of miniaturized scale, large surface-area-to-volume ratio, and high heat transfer rate. In this study, microchannel heat exchangers with and without fan-shaped reentrant cavities were designed and manufactured, and experiments were conducted to investigate the flow and heat-transfer characteristics. The impact rising from the radius of reentrant cavities, as well as the Reynolds number on the heat transfer and the pressure drop, is also analyzed. The results indicate that, compared with straight microchannels, microchannels with reentrant cavities could enhance the heat transfer and, more importantly, reduce the pressure drop at the same time. For the ranges of parameters studied, increasing the radius of reentrant cavities could augment the effect of pressure-drop reduction, while the corresponding variation of heat transfer is complicated. It is considered that adding reentrant cavities in microchannel heat exchangers is an ideal approach to improve performance.

This paper presents the effect of the changes in fin geometry on pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of louvered fin heat exchanger numerically. Three dimensional simulation using ANSYS Fluent have been conducted for six different configurations at Reynolds number ranging from 200 to 1000 based on louver pitch. The performance of this system has been evaluated by calculating pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient. The result shows that, the fin pitch and the louver pitch have a very considerable effect on pressure drop as well as heat transfer rate. It is observed that increasing the fin pitch will relatively result in an increase in heat transfer rate but at the same time, the pressure drop will decrease. On the other hand, low pressure drop and low heat transfer rate will be obtained when the louver pitch is increased. Final result shows a good agreement between experimental and numerical results of the louvered fin which is about 12%. This indicates the capability of louvered fin in enhancing the performance of heat exchangers.

Compact heat exchangers (CHEs) have been widely used in various applications in thermal fluid systems including automotive thermal management systems. Among the different types of heat exchangers for engine cooling applications, cross-flow CHEs with louvered fins are of special interest because of their higher heat rejection capability with the lower flow resistance. In this study, the effects of geometrical parameters such as louver angle and fin pitch on air flow and heat transfer characteristics on CHEs are numerically investigated. Numerical investigations using five different cases with increased and decreased louver angles (+2°, +4°, −2°, −4°, and uniform angle 20°), with a fixed fin pitch and using three different fin pitches (1.0 mm, 2.0 mm, and 4.0 mm), and with the fixed louver angle are examined. The three-dimensional (3D) governing equations for the fluid flow and heat transfer are solved using a standard finite-volume method (FVM) for the range of Reynolds number between 100 and 1000. The computational model is used to study the variations of pressure drop, flow temperature, and Nusselt number.

Impingement cooling offers very high heat transfer coefficients. Flow field, involved in impingement cooling is dominated by stagnation zone, transition zone and developing zone. Understanding of complex flow phenomenon and its effects on heat transfer characteristics is useful for efficient designing of impingement channels. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has emerged as a powerful tool for the analysis of flow and heat transfer systems. Honeywell has been investigating the use of CFD to determine the characteristics of various complex turbine blade cooling heat transfer augmentation methods such as impingement. The objective of this study is to develop CFD methodology which is suitable for computational investigation of flow and heat transfer analysis of impingement cooling through validation. Single row of circular jets impinging on concave (curved) surface has been considered for this study. The validation was accomplished with the test results of Bunker and Metzger [10] and with the correlations of Chupp et al. [7]. The parameters which are varied in this study include jet Reynolds number (Re2B = 6750–10200), target plate distance to jet diameter ratio (Z/d = 3 and 4), and target surface sharpness (i.e. radius ratio, r* = 0.2, 0.4 and 1) the simulations are performed under steady state conditions. Predicted results are compared for local endwall heat transfer results along the curve length of the mid span target wall. Flow field results obtained at different locations are presented to understand the heat transfer behavior.

The latest research on energy piles demonstrates that most scholars are focusing their attention on optimization by designing more efficient heat exchanger coils, analyzing the heat pump matching parameters, and so on. However, after more than 20 years of development, these traditional methods for improving the heat transfer efficiency of energy piles have reached a bottleneck, and a new approach for the continued enhancement of this technology must be investigated. In this study, powdered graphite with high heat transfer characteristics was included in a concrete mix to create graphite concrete piles with enhanced heat transfer characteristics. The results from theoretical analysis, laboratory testing, and numerical simulation indicate that using graphite to improve the heat transfer efficiency of a concrete material is an effective method for enhancing the thermal efficiency of an energy pile system. The research results also show that the heat transfer coefficient of the concrete exhibits greater improvement when the graphite content is greater than 15% under the same environmental temperature. After studying the performance of the proposed graphite concrete energy pile under different environmental temperatures (10°C, 20°C, 30°C, and 40°C), the results indicate that the working efficiency of the energy pile is better in the summer than in the winter. Finally, parameters such as the cast-in pipe configuration and pile spacing are optimized.
