An environmentally-friendly and easy synthesis of a series of novel functionalized imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) is described under both the conventional procedure and microwave irradiation. The structures of newly synthesized room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) were established by different spectral analyses. All ILs (1–14) were screened for their in vitro antimicrobial activity against a panel of clinically isolated bacteria. The results of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) showed that some of the tested ILs are very promising anti-bacterial agents especially those containing an alkyl chain with a phenyl group (most notably 1, 2, 12, and 13).

Amphotericin B (AmpB), one of the most commonly used agents in the treatment of severe fungal infections and life-threatening parasitic diseases such as visceral Leishmaniasis, has a negligible oral bioavailability, primarily due to a low solubility and permeability. To develop an oral formulation, medium chain triglycerides and nonionic surfactants in a self-nano-emulsifying drug delivery system (SNEDDS) containing AmpB were combined with room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) of imidazolium. The presence of ionic liquids significantly enhanced the solubility of AmpB, exhibited a low toxicity and increased the transport of AmpB across Caco-2 cell monolayers. The combination of RTILs with a lipid formulation might be a promising strategy to improve the oral bioavailability of AmpB.

A series of air- and water-stable imidazolium perrhenate-based room-temperature ionic liquids [(RT)ILs] of the type [Cnmim][ReO4] (Cnmim = 1-CnH2n+1-3-methylimidazolium, n = 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12) have been synthesized and characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and elemental analysis (EA). The effect of the variation of the alkyl chain length on physical properties such as melting point, thermal stability, density, and conductivity was examined
