This paper presents an instrument based on an equal-arm Michelson interferometer and a frequency-stabilized helium-neon laser. It is designed to record hydrosphere pressure variations in the frequency range from 0 (conventionally) to 1000 Hz, with accuracy of 0.24 mPa at sea depths of up to 50 m. The operating range of the instrument can be increased by order of magnitude by improving the registration system speed, and accuracy can be enhanced by using larger diameter membranes and/or their smaller thickness. The paper demonstrates some experimental results obtained on the supersensitive detector of hydrosphere pressure variations, confirming its high performance in the infrasonic and sonic ranges.

Calibration of autocollimators is usually done using a sine bar. In this paper we describe an interferometric method in which only conventional metrological laboratory equipment is used, namely an helium–neon laser and a Michelson interferometer. The precision obtained is comparable for both interferometric and sine-bar methods. For comparison purposes, a very simple third calibration method has also been used. Here, a previously calibrated autocollimator serves as the reference. [Translated by the journal]

The Raman spectra of polycrystalline α-nitrogen and α-carbon monoxide have been recorded at 18 °K, using argon–ion and helium–neon laser excitation. Previously undetected peaks at 60 cm−1 for N2 and 90.5 cm−1 for CO are assigned as librational modes, and splitting of the stretching mode in nitrogen is observed for the first time. Spectral features in both the intramolecular and lattice regions are assigned in accordance with accepted crystal structures, and their frequencies compared with those obtained from calculations based on a spherical Lennard–Jones potential and quadrupole–quadrupole interactions between the molecules.
