Due to the significant increase in the age of infrastructure globally, maintenance of existing structures has been prioritized over the construction of new structures, which are very costly. However, many infrastructure facilities have not been managed efficiently due to a lack of well-trained staff and budget limitations. Bridge management systems (BMSs) have been constructed and operated globally to maintain the originally designed structural performance and to overcome the inefficiency of maintenance practices for existing bridges. Unfortunately, because most of the current BMSs are based on 2D information systems, bridge maintenance data and information are not utilized effectively for bridge management. To overcome these problems, studies of BMSs based on building information modeling (BIM) have significantly increased in number. Most previous studies have proposed comprehensive frameworks containing approximate and limited information for maintenance to utilize BIM technology. Moreover, the utilization level of the maintenance information is less efficient because detailed information regarding safety diagnosis and maintenance are not included in data formats that are interpretable by computer algorithms. Therefore, in this study, a BIM-based BMS, including detailed information relating to safety diagnosis and maintenance, was constructed for the sustainability of bridge maintenance. To consider detailed information in the BMS, a maintenance data schema and its information system were established via the compilation of detailed information for safety diagnosis, repair and strengthening, remaining life, and valuation. In addition, a web data management program (WDMP) was developed using the maintenance data schema and information system, and was connected with the Midas CIM, which is a 3D modeling program. Finally, a prototype of the proposed BMS was established for an actual bridge in Korea. The proposed BMS in this study may be expected to improve the existing management practices for maintenance, and to reduce maintenance cost and information loss.

Poverty is one continuing social issue which is hard to solve. Dealing with this problem, Islam has already had the alternative solution that is tithe (Zakat). Zakat is implemented to decrease economy imbalanced appeared in the society. While in fact, not all the Moslem pay Zakat. There are five factors as the reason why Moslem didn’t do that. First, some Muzakki wants to deliver his zakat directly.Seconde, not all Muzakki know how much Zakat must be paid. The other factors are Limited information about Mustahik home, limited time that Muzakki have to deliver his Zakat directly and the easiness to report Mustahik data. Dealing with those factors, it is required to have an information system which can make Muzakki meets Mustahik. In this research, information system application used Extreme Programming (XP) development method. XP method is required to program a system which will be made by accomodating the users’ needs and expectations.

Realizing the sustainability and competitiveness in the trade of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAP) resources of north India is challenging due to lack of participation from the primary producers (growers and harvesters). This is credited to their unawareness of sustainable resources management practices caused by the lack of a marketing information system (MIS) in the trade. The introduction of a MIS can supplement sustainability in the sector, while improving competitiveness. Through a qualitative research approach, this study investigates the need for marketing information among the primary producers of medicinal and aromatic plants of Uttarakhand, and offers a comprehensive framework for a provincial MIS and strategies for the MAP trade. The proposed MIS would be helpful in linking the MAP trade with sustainability and competitiveness.

Limited information exists on the effects of forest management practices on bryophytes, despite their importance to forest ecosystems. We examined short-term responses of ground-layer bryophytes to logging disturbance and creation of edges in mature Pseudotsuga forests of western Washington (USA). The abundance and richness of species were measured in four 1-ha forest aggregates (patches of intact forest) and in surrounding logged areas before and after structural retention harvests. One year after treatment, species richness, total cover, and frequency of most moss and liverwort taxa declined within harvest areas. Within forest aggregates, mosses did not show significant edge effects; however, richness and abundance of liverworts declined with proximity to the aggregate edge. Our results suggest that, over short time frames, 1-ha-sized aggregates are sufficient to maintain most common mosses through structural retention harvests but are not large enough to prevent declines or losses of liverworts. Thus, current standards for structural retention, which allow for aggregates as small as 0.2 ha, may be inadequate to retain the diversity and abundance of species found in mature, undisturbed forests.Key words: bryophyte, edge effects, forest borders, forest management, logging effects, structural retention harvest.

Web-based customization refers to an e-commerce business model whereby customers can individualize their products via the electronic channel. The success of this business model to a great extent depends on the appropriateness of the information system, which supports online interaction between customer and supplier (Franke & Piller, 2003). For example, computer manufacturers offering their products online enable customers to select the type of components to be built in the final product (e.g., type of processor, motherboards, graphic and sound cards, etc.). This type of interaction is referred to as Web-based product configuration. In order to increase the chances that customers find suitable products, Web-based customization offers large variety. However, due to the limited information processing capacity of humans and lack of technical product knowledge, excessive product variety confuses customers (Piller, Koch, Moeslein, & Schubert, 2003). It triggers decision-making difficulties and uncertainty concerning the suitability of choices. In effect, customers are generally unaware of their needs and not capable of making optimal buying decisions. Furthermore, the support provided by common information systems is more consistency check than real assistance, since their main task is to verify the compatibility of components between each other. On the other hand, the resulting variety brings about an increasing complexity of operations and manufacturing-related tasks on the supplier’s side. The complexity that is perceived by customers during the interaction process is called “external complexity,” whereas complexity that is experienced inside manufacturing and operations is referred to as “internal complexity.” Therefore, a suitable information system that supports Web-based customization should simultaneously address both challenges. It should provide customers with appropriate assistance during the search for adequate products and support suppliers in managing variety. In the following, an information system that is capable of coping with both types of complexity will be developed.

The industry foundation classes (IFC) data model is the most important data schema in ensuring the interoperability of the information generated throughout the lifecycle of facilities. However, because the current IFC model is focused on buildings, there are limitations when this model is applied to bridge structures. This paper proposes a method that enables the information modeling of steel box girder bridges based on the current IFC. To select the required and core items, we classify the components of a steel box girder bridge by the design stage with reference to engineering documents. To generate functional meanings of each bridge component, we develop the rules of the unique identifier and information reassignment, and then apply a semi-automated naming algorithm. The generated bridge information model was used to confirm the functional semantic meanings of individual components, and it was checked whether additional external information, such as carbon emissions, could be linked for specific bridge components. It was observed that information retrieval and extraction for components is possible through a semantic-based query to the generated IFC-based bridge information model.
