Recent failures in COVID-19 prevention and control in some of the richest countries raise questions about the relevance of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the fight against pandemics. To examine this issue, we adopted the measure of countries’ progress for the SDGs in the SDG Index Scores (SDGS) and employed two analytical devices. The first was regression-aided adjustment of the number of deaths and confirmed cases. The second was the use of robust regressions to control the undue influence of outliers. The results are mixed. Between the SDGS and the adjusted infection rates, we found no significant correlation; however, between the SDGS and the adjusted death rates, the correlation was negative and statistically significant. These results provide a nuanced contrast to the hasty conclusions some of us might be tempted to draw from apparent positive correlations between SDGS and the cases and the deaths. The SDGs represent the fruit of painstaking global efforts to encourage and coordinate international action to enhance sustainability. We find the results reassuring, in that they suggest that the countries with higher SDGS have been able to control the devastation of deaths from COVID-19 more effectively, despite being unable to control the propagation of infections.

Background and context: NCDs represent the major health burden in UAE, accounting for 65% of all deaths in UAE. At national level, UAE national agenda 2021 signified the high level commitments toward NCD prevention and control. The national agenda includes a set of national targets that aims on reducing NCD mortality and burden. Those targets are aligned well with WHO global targets for 2025 and the 2030 for sustainable development goals and targets. Aim: To draw on the experiences of UAE that had made good progress in integrating NCDs into national development agenda and developing national accountability mechanism to facilitate engagement of nonhealth sectors. Strategy/Tactics: The national multisectoral action plan for NCD prevention and control for (2017- 2021) provides a clear road map for NCD action. Program/Policy process: there have been various policy interventions and programs to support this agenda, including the inclusion of NCDs with measurable targets and indicators under the third of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015. Outcomes: Taking into account the vital role of nonhealth sectors, key performance indicators were assigned for each sectors and a regular in-house reporting system has been institutionalized to allow effective progress, which was monitored by a committee lead by Prime Minister office. A number of fast track initiatives has been undertaken to reduce the NCD burden, such as screening and health promotion programs conducted by the primary healthcare, taxation on sugary drinks and tobacco, national periodic health and cancer screening initiatives, smoking cessation, and breast cancer screening campaigns. What was learned: Ensure full engagement of national stakeholders, during development and implementation of NCD action plan is critical. The role and responsibilities of each sector has to be agreed upon. Developing national targets and indicators with accountability scheme is essential to monitor progress.

Sustainability is a topic with deep implications, as reflected by the approval of the 2030 Agenda for the sustainable development that has 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). One of these SDGs tries to achieve the sustainability of cities, for which we have verified that their resilience is necessary against natural hazards (NH). For the persistence of NH through time on a world scale, it is crucial to train expert technicians in the prevention and control of these risks. For this research, two studies have been made, one focused on research into the training of environmentalists by means of gamification, and the other to verify the potential of this same tool in the NH analysis and management. With this work we have been able to verify that the model of city designed can be an alternative and more sustainable model to the current solutions, also corroborating the usefulness of simulation in their design and its role in the resilience against NH. On the other hand, in relation to the teaching of the subject under study, based on the competences studied, this study is considered successful, demonstrating the utility of gamification and simulations in the formation of environmentalists.

Purpose. The purpose of the article is investigation of the problems in the formation of a unified system of indicators of the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals in the world and Ukraine, justification of the need to adapt the approaches applied at the international level to the solution of the national objectives of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, determination of the directions for monitoring in this area. Methodology of research. Scientists researches, documents of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine, and reports of the United Nations were the theoretical basis this research. The comparison and analogy methods were used for analysis of information about control, coordination and monitor mechanisms in the process of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in foreign countries; as well as under determining the relevance of the approved national targets and indicators to the Global Sustainable Development Goals indicators. Definition of the priority tasks, that should be resolved to work more effectively in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, was done based on the method of generalization. Findings. The article substantiates the need to solve the problems that exist in the field of the SDGs achievement in Ukraine, in particular: imperfection of a monitoring and control system for achievement of SDGs indicators, insufficient information on established national tasks at the local level; no legal nature defined for such an important document as the National Sustainable Development Goals - Ukraine report. Priority directions for further work on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals have been formed. The priority tasks for improving a system of monitoring and control over the fulfillment of national tasks have been identified. The necessity of expanding the information base and the importance of regular data collection are substantiated. Originality. The priority steps in the work on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in Ukraine in terms of improving information support and the institutional environment in this field are offered. It will help to increase the effectiveness of the implementation of national goals in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals Practical value. The obtained research results can be used to identify further ways of working towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, both nationally and locally, which will contribute to a more effective implementation of the UN global strategy objectives. Key words: Sustainable Development Goals (SDG); SDG indicators; national indicators; global indicator framework; monitoring; sustainable development strategy.

The world is a complex and at times mystifying place. Sense and reason struggle for visibility among national terms of reference constructed around an individual nation’s needs, pride and (in some cases) survival. Embedded among these ‘instincts’ lurk the more menacing forces of power, influence and control. It is from such hybrid climates that the globally facing Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the succeeding Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) emerged.

Abstract. Economic changes in the context of globalization have left adolescents from Latin American contexts with few opportunities to make satisfactory transitions into adulthood. Recent studies indicate that there is a protracted period between the end of schooling and entering into formal working activities. While in this “limbo,” illicit activities, such as drug trafficking may emerge as an alternative for young people to ensure their social participation. This article aims to deepen the understanding of Brazilian youth’s involvement in drug trafficking and its intersection with their schooling, work, and aspirations, connecting with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 and 16 as proposed in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by the United Nations in 2015 .
