Geosynthetics have proven to provide sustainable solutions for geotechnical and geoenvironmental problems when used with natural materials. Therefore, the expected benefits to the environment when geosynthetics are associated with unconventional or alternative construction materials will be even greater. This paper addresses the use of geosynthetics with wasted materials in different applications. The potential uses of alternative materials such as wasted tires, construction and demolition wastes, and plastic bottles are presented and discussed considering results from laboratory and field tests. Combinations of geosynthetics and alternative construction materials applied to reinforced soil structures, drainage systems for landfills, barriers, and stabilisation of embankments on soft grounds are discussed. The results show the feasibility of such combinations, and that they are beneficial to the environment and in line with the increasing trend towards a circular economy and sustainable development.

Abstract Green-geo-engineering with geosynthetic reinforced soil structures is of increasing practice around the world. Poland is among the leading countries with the third biggest geogrid market in Europe. The German EBGEO 2010 Guideline for Soil Reinforcement with Geosynthetics as first European Guideline for Geosynthetics linked to the Eurocode 7, and the new design code for Japanese railway structures under seismic loading are introduced. New research results from the Geotechnical Institute of the RWTH Aachen, Germany, dealing with the soil/reinforcement interaction and new approaches for design codes for the reinforcement of base courses in traffic areas based on lab and field tests in the USA are presented.

The article presents a comparative analysis, based on field tests, of the quality of loosening of soil structures of the upper horizon with technical means developed at KubSAU and an improved design of a universal tillage unit.

Concrete is the most versatile, durable and reliable material and is the most used building material. It requires large amounts of Portland cement which has environmental problems associated with its production. Hence, an alternative concrete – geopolymer concrete is needed. The general aim of this book is to make significant contributions in understanding and deciphering the mechanisms of the realization of the alkali-activated fly ash-based geopolymer concrete and, at the same time, to present the main characteristics of the materials, components, as well as the influence that they have on the performance of the mechanical properties of the concrete. The book deals with in-depth research of the potential recovery of fly ash and using it as a raw material for the development of new construction materials, offering sustainable solutions to the construction industry.
