Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.), and western redcedar (Thuja plicata Donn ex D. Don) seedlings were planted in March 2001 within three clearcut-harvested, shelterwood, or thinned stands of mature Douglas-fir near Olympia, Washington. From 2002 to 2005, areas of vegetation control of 0, 4.5, or 9 m2 were maintained with herbicides around a total 162 seedlings per species. Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was 34%, 62%, and 100% of full sunlight in thinned stands, shelterwoods, and clearcuts, respectively. Effects of overstory level and vegetation control on seedling growth and resource availability generally were additive. Seedling stem volume index in clearcuts averaged four to eight times that observed in thinned stands, and with vegetation control, it averaged two to four times that observed without it. In thinned stands, relative growth rate of seedling stem volume index had a positive linear relationship with PAR (R2 = 0.38). Foliar nitrogen content of Douglas-fir explained 71% of the variation in relative growth rate. Factors explaining the most variation in foliar nitrogen content differed between thinned stands (PAR, R2 = 0.34) and clearcuts or shelterwoods (midday water potential, R2 = 0.63), suggesting that light and root competition, respectively, were the primary growth-limiting factors for these overstory levels.

Abstract Height growth of outplanted loblolly pine seedlings was monitored over a 3-year period. Growth of seedlings from 20 nurseries was correlated with initial seedling characteristics from paired samples. Height growth during the first 6 months after planting was negatively correlated with the initial seedling height and shoot/root ratio and was positively correlated with root growth potential (RGP) and root weight. However, these variables were not significantly correlated with later growth. Foliar nitrogen content (mg of foliar nitrogen per seedling) was positively correlated with both initial and subsequent field growth. Foliar nitrogen content was the only variable that was significantly correlated with diameter growth and volume growth during the third year after planting. This variable accounted for 36% of the variation among sample means for 3-year height growth. These data support a previous report that field performance of loblolly pine seedlings during the first 3 years in the field can be influenced by the foliar nitrogen content at lifting. South. J. Variable retention harvest systems are encouraged to promote complexity in managed forests, and aggregated retention has been suggested as a means of reducing moisture stress in residual trees. We studied the impacts of within-aggregate position on growth and foliar physiology to better understand the spatial dynamics of residual-tree responses to aggregated retention harvests in even-aged Pinus resinosa Ait. stands. Distance from edge and edge aspect influenced radial growth, volume increment, and growth efficiency, but only edge aspect affected foliar nitrogen content. Spatial variables had no significant relationships with foliar carbon isotope ratios (δ13C). Increases in radial growth, volume increment, and growth efficiency following harvesting were greatest near edges and in the northeastern quadrants of aggregates that received mechanical understory release treatments, and lowest in the southeastern quadrant of aggregates and near aggregate centers. Foliar nitrogen content was highest in the southwestern quadrants of aggregates that received understory release treatments, and lowest in the northwestern quadrants of aggregates. Our results suggest spatial relationships are important determinants of residual-tree responses to aggregated retention harvests.
