Abstract A Galerkin projection of the equation of motion of geometrically-exact sandwich beams, applicable to 1-D plates, formulated in Vu-Quoc & Ebcioğlu [1995] is presented here. The beam could take any arbitrary initial position in the 2-D space. Each layer of the beam could have different material constants with no restriction on the mass distribution and layer thickness; further, each layer could take on different length, thus allows the modeling of multilayer structures with ply drop-off. Finite rotations and shear deformation are accommodated for in each layer. The deformed cross section of the beam is continuous, piecewise linear. The continuity of displacement across the interlayer boundaries is exactly enforced. Extensive numerical examples including sandwich structures with ply drop-off, free flying and spin up maneuver of sandwich beams are presented to illustrate the applicability and versatility of the proposed formulation.

This paper considers theoretical and practical approaches to the construction of amplitude-frequency phase characteristics of turbofan engines and presents the results of the experiments. The novelty lies in excluding usage of information from the sensor of its initial position for the construction of the rotor phase characteristic. To determine the instantaneous value of the phase angle of the rotor oscillations, the method of orbital vibration analysis is used. Using the analysis of phase change of rotor fluctuation allows to define availability of resonance as well as defects and malfunctions that cause induce stiffness and damping of the rotor. Examples of turbofan engines diagnostics by means of the analysis of amplitude-frequency phase characteristics are given.

The multiple routes travelling salesman problem (mrTSP) is an extension of the well-known travelling salesman problem (TSP), where there are several points clusters to be visited by salesman. The problem to be solved is how to define the best route in every cluster and initial position of each routes as interconnection points for the salesman. In this paper, modified genetic algorithm (mGA) is proposed in order to solve the mrTSP problem. In the proposed mGA, new heuristic algorithm for crossover and mutation operator based on local shortest path algorithm is proposed in order to assist the mGA to improve 'best solution so far'. Numerical examples are also given to test the performance of proposed mGA when solving mrTSP. The result of the study shows that the mGA is superior compared to conventional GA.

Phase-change erasable optical storage is based on the ability to switch a micron-sized region of a thin film between the crystalline and amorphous states using a diffraction-limited laser as a heat source. A bit of information can be represented as an amorphous spot on a crystalline background, and the two states can be optically identified by their different reflectivities. In a typical multilayer thin-film structure the active (storage) layer is sandwiched between one or more dielectric layers. The dielectric layers provide physical containment and act as a heat sink. A viable phase-change medium must be able to quench to the glassy phase after melting, and this requires proper tailoring of the thermal properties of the multilayer film. The present research studies one particular multilayer structure and shows the effect of an additional aluminum layer on the glass-forming ability.

Animal feed knife is a tool that serves to cut and chop animal feed consisting of grass as the main ingredient with additives such as bran, herbs, centrate, cassava, tofu pulp and others. Therefore, as a cutting tool must have the properties of friction resistance, impact resistance, and have good sharpness, so that the material chosen is Ni-Hard 1. The use of centrifugal casting method was chosen because it has the advantage of being able to make castings with relatively thin thickness this is due to the influence of the centrifugal force on the distribution of metal liquids throughout the cavity in the mold. Case study in this study is the use of centrifugal casting methods as an alternative to gravity casting methods to overcome defects of misruns. This research was conducted to investigate the effect of speed on the formation of castings products. The method that was carried out began with a literature study on centrifugal casting, and continued by determining the material, the temperature of the cast is in the range 1250ºC - 1300ºC, and the type of mold. The next step is to do work drawings, pattern making, mold making, casting processes, fettling processes, and analysis. With variations in speed of 200 rpm, 300 rpm and 400 rpm, it can be seen the optimal speed for making this product. The results of this study obtained optimal speed at a speed of 300 rpm to make good quality of animal feed knife products.
