The challenge of climate change demands reduction in global CO2 mission. Carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) technology can be used to trap and store carbon dioxide gas emitted by coal-burning plants and this can reduce the world’s total CO2 emission by about one quarter by 2050 (IEA 2008, 2009; IPCC 2005). Experience from the storage sites of Sleipner in the Norwegian North Sea, Salah in Algeria, Nagaoka in Japan, Frio in USA and other sites shows that geological structures can safely accommodate CO2 produced and captured from large CO2 point sources. CCS is regarded as a technology that will make power generation from coal sustainable, based on cost-effective CO2 capture, transport and safe geological storage of the released CO2.

The CO2 capturing technologies as applied to FCC flue gas in order to reduce GHG (green house gases) were evaluated and compared in this review. Although the CCS (carbon capture and storage) idea has been proposed for more than 30 years, there has been little commercial success of CCS projects. The largest issue is where to store the massive amount of captured pure CO2 every year. Therefore, the review will focus on the efficient use of power or heat to reduce CO2 emission and how to recycle the use of produced CO2 before it is emitted to the atmosphere rather than being captured and stored. The scenarios with oxyfiring, microalgae-cofiring or biogas burning to treat FCC flue gas are introduced and discussed.

The latest technologies for climate change mitigation are carbon capture and storage (CCS). Some countries are developing CCS projects, and they are currently at different stages of deployment. Despite the signing of international agreements on climate change mitigation, Russia’s efforts to develop and implement CCS technologies are quite limited. Therefore, it is vital that people are aware of the importance of carbon dioxide capture, utilization, and storage. The purpose of this article is to produce guidelines and toolkits to form a system of measures aimed at raising awareness of the Russian society on carbon dioxide capture and storage technologies. The paper discusses the key findings of several recent studies on the topic, e.g., a study focusing on the level of environmental consciousness among St. Petersburg students; a content analysis of the Russian school textbooks; a study of environmental groups in Russian social media; and an experimental study on creating eco-comics and posters as educational tools for promoting environmental awareness. A multi-level system of educational activities is proposed, including events for preschoolers, schoolchildren, students, and adults.
