From the perspective of experts in instructional design, what pedagogical elements favor the construction of virtual learning environments? It is the question that guides the present investigation. Education has had significant changes in recent decades, so institutions would be expected to transform. The management of educational change must be carried out from within the institutions themselves, who, through the operability of their educational model, foster the learning of their students. The innovation elements of an institution involve the entire educational community. The pedagogical foundations must permeate the management team, teachers and administrative staff to achieve true educational quality in any educational modality. This research focuses on the particularities of the virtual modality. It aims to analyze the different perspectives of instructional designers of institutions of higher and higher education regarding what pedagogical elements are necessary in offering virtual education. It also analyzes the professional profile of those who exercise the role of instructional designer in the different institutions.

Perception research helps to understand how stimuli (gist) interacts with learners' sensory systems (visual, auditory, tactile). Communication in virtual learning environments is significant because when the laws of perception are manifested, the strategy should include discovering how the relationships between the instructional design process (analyze, design, develop, implement and evaluate) synthesizes learning theories and learners' experience to create effective communication in virtual instructional events, learning objectives and goals.

Research competencies are adopted in higher education, however, little is known about the role of these competencies in the virtual environment.  This research is one of the first to describe research competences in postgraduate students in virtual learning environments. An observational design study using the research competences questionnaire was conducted with 89 students. The findings indicate that cognitive and teamwork competences are the most predominant (58.4% and 71.9%) and that the weakest areas are related to technological competences 33.7%, methodological competences 39.7% and project management 22.5%. These findings highlight the need to improve curricula in postgraduate schools where research competences are strengthened by prioritising technological, methodological and project management aspects so that students obtain the necessary skills and abilities and can improve their research processes.   Keywords: research competences, virtual learning environments, research training.

This chapter presents some of the methods and approaches that are used in the assessment of student outcomes in 3-D virtual learning environments. Distance learning or eLearning that includes the 3-D virtual learning environments have been increasing dramatically because of the rise in demand by students. Because of this advent in eLearning, assessment of the outcomes is crucial when measuring student learning. In addition to the measurement of student learning, the instructional designers will need assessment of student learning as a means to upgrade the 3-D virtual learning environments and maintain the relevancy of the content for students. Much of the research on measurement of outcomes is based on anecdotal evidence provided by students. A comprehensive examination of assessment of the 3-D virtual learning environment becomes paramount, so educators will have a better idea how to carefully assess outcomes of student learning.

AbstractVirtual learning environments (VLEs) are successfully used by many institutions to provide content which supports and enhances taught courses. In this article, Lizz Edwards-Waller explores the role of the library in uploading articles, case notes and book excerpts to a VLE for law students, and discusses the need for librarians to collaborate with course leaders and administrators. The article also considers the decision-making process involved in determining which resources to make available and highlights some key copyright issues to be aware of.
