Objective - The purpose of this research is to examine the consequences of accrual based earnings management and real earnings management on future operating performance. The firms studied engage in accrual-based earnings management with discretionary accrual measures using the modified Jones model and some of the following real earnings management activities: (1) Sales manipulation that accelerates the timing of sales through increased price discounts or cutting prices to boost sales in the current period; and/or (2) cutting of discretionary expenditures to increase income in the current period. Furthermore, the study examines the extent to which discretionary accrual and real earnings management affects subsequent operating performance (as measured by both return on assets and operating cash flows). Methodology/Technique - The sample manufacturing firms that engage in financial statement were listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange between 2012 and 2014. The hypothesis testing method used in this research is multiple regression linear. Findings - The results suggest that accrual-based earnings management, with discretionary accrual measures, and real earnings management through sales manipulation and discretionary expenditures are positively associated with return on assets after one and two years. Meanwhile, accrual-based earnings management and real earnings management through sales manipulation enhances subsequent operating cash flows. However, real earnings management through discretionary expenditures does not influence operating cash flows. Novelty - This research contributes to the existing literature on the subsequent impact of accrual-based earnings management and real earnings management Type of Paper: Empirical Keywords: Discretionary Accrual; Sales Manipulation; Discretionary Expenditure; Return on Assets; Operating Cash Flows JEL Classification: M21, M41.

The purpose of this study is to verify IFRS contribution by examining the presence of Accrual Earnings Management (AEM) and Real Earnings Management (REM) in the period pre- and post- IFRS implementation in manufacturing companies in Indonesia. AEM is measured by absolute value of discretionary accrual, while REM is proxied by three measurements of REM, they are abnormal cash flow operation, abnormal production and abnormal discretionary expenses. The sample is taken from Indonesia stock exchange in 2009-2011 and 2013-2015. 2012 is Indonesia adoption period and it is excluded from the sample, because it is considerated as transitory year. This study uses regression analysis and Paired t-test to compare the presence of AEM and REM preceding and following IFRS implementation. The findings reveal that IFRS adoption has significantly negative effect towards AEM and REM. It indicates that the following IFRS implementation, AEM and REM are decrease. Therefore, IFRS is able to reduce earnings management practices in manufacturing companies in Indonesia both for AEM and REM.

This research is aimed to examine (1) effect of discretionary and innate accrual on earnings predictability (2) effect of market share and financial health on relationship between real earnings management and earnings predictability. This research use manufacture firms listed in Indonesian Stock Exchange 2003-2015 as research sample, with 2013-2014 as research period. Accrual earnings management is measured by discretionary and innate abnormal accrual. Real earnings management is measured by aggregate of abnormal cash flow of operation, abnormal production, abnormal discretionary expenses. As expected, discretionary accrual as opportunist act does not support earnings predictability, while innate accrual as information signaling of business model improves earnings predictability. Real earnings management as information signaling of market share and financial health improves earnings predictability as well. In general, earnings management as information signaling is more likely to communicate condition of firm and leads to informativeness of earnings.

We observe the association amid ownership structure and real earnings management in Bangladesh. Our study takes 2195 firm-year observations which are listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange over the period of 2000-2017. The outcome of the panel least square regression indicates that inside ownership, as well as foreign ownership, is inversely related to real earnings management, whereas institutional ownership is positively related to real earnings management. In particular, firms tend to reduce discretionary expenses to manage earnings if the magnitude of inside ownership is low. In contrast to that, when firms are characterized by more institutional ownership, they are more inclined towards real earnings management through additional price discounts, offering a more friendly credit facility, and lowering discretionary expense. This result is consistent with previous findings. Nevertheless, if firms encounter an absence of foreign ownership, they prefer to manage earnings through operating at over-production levels as well as lowering discretionary expenses. Additionally, we find that corporate governance is playing a beneficial role in limiting real earnings management

There are a great number of incentives that drive managements to manipulate firms’ profit. Beside exploiting the allowed discretional accrual choices, managers could perform real earnings management by altering the normal operating scale of the companies. This paper examines the three most prevalent means of real earnings management, including (1) boost in sales through price discounts or more lenient credit terms; (2) reduction of discretional expenses and (3) overproduction. The main concentration of the study is the applications of these measures to avoid losses. By using data of 610 listed companies on Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange from 2008 to 2015 and verified regression models, the research finds evidence that managers do apply real earnings management to avoid losses. These findings are consistent with other researches’ result. Based on the empirical result, the paper raises recommendations to enhance the profit’s reliability and protect investors.
