This paper investigates the outcome of base metals and their temper condition on tensile and fracture behavior of friction stir welds of various work and precipitation hardening aluminium alloys in different tempers (AA1100-O, 5052-H, AA5086-O & H25, AA2024-O & T6, and AA6061-T651). The type and temper of aluminium alloys affected the tensile, and fracture behavior of weld joints. The extent of improvement in tensile properties of welded joints increased with a decrease in hardness (i.e., from T6 or H to O) of base metals. Softening was not observed for welded joints when base metal was in an annealed temper and an opposite trend was observed for hardened tempers ‘H’ and ‘T6’. Fracture location moved towards the weld centre with the change in temper from ‘O’ to ‘H’ and ‘T6’, hardness minima were closer to base metal hardness in the first case than later. The mode of fracture was ductile for all the weld joints except AA2024-T6 and AA 6061-T651. Except for AA2024-T6 and AA 6061-T651, all weld joints had ductile fracture mode.

AbstractThe main aim of this investigation is to produce a welding joint of higher strength than that of base metals. Composite welded joints were produced by friction stir welding process. 6061 aluminum alloy was used as a base metal and alumina particles added to welding zone to form metal matrix composites. The volume fraction of alumina particles incorporated in this study were 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 vol% were added on both sides of welding line. Also, the alumina particles were pre-mixed with magnesium particles prior being added to the welding zone. Magnesium particles were used to enhance the bonding between the alumina particles and the matrix of 6061 aluminum alloy. Friction stir welded joints containing alumina particles were successfully obtained and it was observed that the strength of these joints was better than that of base metal. Experimental results showed that incorporating volume fraction of alumina particles up to 6 vol% into the welding zone led to higher strength of the composite welded joints as compared to plain welded joints.

— For fabricating light weight structures, it requires high strength-to weight ratio. AA6061 aluminium alloy is widely used in the fabrication of light weight structures. A356 aluminium alloy has wide spread application in aerospace industries. Friction stir welding is solid state joining process which is conducting for joining similar and dissimilar materials. The friction stir welding parameters play an important role for deciding the strength of welded joints. In this investigation, A356 and AA6061 alloys were friction stir welded by varying triangular, square, hexagonal pin profiles of tool keeping the remaining parameters same and AA6061 alloys were friction stir welded by varying tool shoulder diameter as 12mm,15mm,18mm without changing other parameters. Tensile properties of each joint have been analyzed microscopically. From the experimental results, it is observed that hexagonal pin profiled tool and 15mm shoulder diameter tool provides higher tensile properties when compared to other tools.
