Development of the convenient method for the synthesis of (hydroxyphenyl)perfluoroalkylmethanols was achieved by the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) type reduction of the in situ-generated perfluoroalkylated ketones as the key step, and the benzylic OH group of the resultant alcohols was converted to H or Rf(CH2)nO by way of the corresponding chlorides whose transformation was not easy by any other methods.

In situ preparation of cell cultures for ultrastructural investigations is a convenient method by which fixation, dehydration and embedment are carried out in the culture petri dish. The in situ method offers the advantage of preserving the native orientation of cell-cell interactions, junctional regions and overlapping configurations. In order to section after embedment, the petri dish is usually separated from the polymerized resin by either differential cryo-contraction or solvation in organic fluids. The remaining resin block must be re-embedded before sectioning. Although removal of the petri dish may not disrupt the native cellular geometry, it does sacrifice what is now recognized as an important characteristic of cell growth: cell-substratum molecular interactions. To preserve the topographic cell-substratum relationship, we developed a simple method of tapered rotary beveling to reduce the petri dish thickness to a dimension suitable for direct thin sectioning.

The cycloaddition of substituted furans to the diterpenoid aryne (39), generated by in situ diazotization of the anthranilic acid (1) followed by cleavage of the annulated 1,4- epoxydecahydrochrysenes, provides a convenient method for the preparation in high yield of the previously unknown 1-substituted octahydrochrysen-4-ols. Use of 1,3-dipoles under the same procedure, or under a modified procedure involving pre-isolation of the diazonium tetrafluoroborate salt (9), gave novel annulated heterocyclic products directly. Attempted [2+2] cycloadditions of electron-rich alkenes to the diterpenoid aryne (39) were largely unsuccessful but reaction with 1,1-dimethoxyethene by using in situ diazotization gave a product derived from an initial [2+2] cycloaddition.

The use of multilayer ceramic chip capacitors as integrated passive in, e.g., system in package applications needs methods to examine and predict their reliability. Therefore, a nondestructive failure analytical technique is described to detect cracks in the ceramic and the metallic layers within encapsulated 0402 surface mount device (SMD) capacitors. After choosing from techniques to reproducibly generate cracks, it is shown that an in situ capacitance measurement is a convenient method to detect these failures unambiguously. Finite element simulations support the experimental results. A reliability estimate for capacitor integrity under given loading conditions is given.
