Chapter 6 explores Lake District tourism during the inter-war period, focusing on what impacts mass-motorization made on roads, tourist behaviour, local life, and the cultural value of the Lake District. The growth of charabanc and coach travel brought increasing numbers of day trips and tours from ever more distant places, creating a new battlefield for local complaints and conflicts. When a mountain electric railway from Ambleside to Keswick was proposed in 1921, many were convinced that it would be preferable to the constant streams of dust-raising charabancs. Eventually, a groundswell of opinion arose that mountain solitudes and walkers’ and cyclists’ rights should be protected from the ‘rash assault’ of unlimited road construction and queues of cars. Amid this motor-age controversy Wordsworth was once again summoned to give voice to modern discontents. Controversial plans to construct new roads over Wrynose and Hardknott Passes, and a by-pass road through Dora’s Field below Rydal Mount, were abandoned.

AbstractThis article examines men's valuing of women's work in the post-1945 period. It considers men's perspectives on female labour in and outside the home in the context of women's wartime work, the increase in married women working and the greater involvement of men in family life. I argue that men saw their wives’ and partners’ work as of lesser value than their own, in various ways, even if the money women's paid work brought in could significantly improve living standards. This was true even in the most caring, loving relationships. The article employs a broad definition of value, considering the social and cultural value of work alongside its economic outcomes. It places subjective accounts from interviews within a wider cultural and political context and contributes a new perspective to post-war British historiography by focusing on both paid labour and domestic work, and the negotiation of value between men and women.

This article proposes a definition and terminology for identifying and analysing a concept of institutional persona in relation to theatre. The essay posits the theatre institution as an example of a ‘composite persona’, whereby cultural value is produced through the interplay between theatre as building, theatre as organisation, and theatre as event. Using the case-study of Bristol Old Vic, I examine how executives and practitioners involved in a specific historic theatre ensured its post-war survival in the 1940s by connecting the prestigious heritage of a local landmark with the national reputation of two London-based organisations. I suggest that theatre institutions offer a particularly rich investigative ground for the application of persona study theory in their need to mobilise individual and organisational personas for the purposes of reinventing a ‘good story’ and brand over time.
