We considered five generalizations of the standard Weibull distribution to describe the lifetime of two important components of sugarcane harvesting machines. The harvesters considered in the analysis harvest an average of 20 tons of sugarcane per hour and their malfunction may lead to major losses; therefore, an effective maintenance approach is of main interest for cost savings. For the considered distributions, mathematical background is presented. Maximum likelihood is used for parameter estimation. Further, different discrimination procedures were used to obtain the best fit for each component. At the end, we propose a maintenance scheduling for the components of the harvesters using predictive analysis.

Many studies have suggested the modifications and generalizations of the Weibull distribution to model the nonmonotone hazards. In this paper, we combine the logarithms of two cumulative hazard rate functions and propose a new modified form of the Weibull distribution. The newly proposed distribution may be called a new flexible extended Weibull distribution. Corresponding hazard rate function of the proposed distribution shows flexible (monotone and nonmonotone) shapes. Three different characterizations along with some mathematical properties are provided. We also consider the maximum likelihood estimation procedure to estimate the model parameters. For the illustrative purposes, two real applications from reliability engineering with bathtub-shaped hazard functions are analyzed. The practical applications show that the proposed model provides better fits than the other nonnested models.

It is difficult to estimate the parameters of Weibull distribution model using maximum likelihood estimation based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) theory for which is easy to fall into premature and needs more variables, ant colony algorithm theory was introduced into maximum likelihood method, and a parameter estimation method based on ant colony algorithm theory was proposed, an example was simulated to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of this method by comparing with ant colony algorithm and PSO.This template explains and demonstrates how to prepare your camera-ready paper for Trans Tech Publications. The maximum likelihood estimation is a widely used approach to the parameter estimation. However, the conventional algorithm makes the estimation procedure of three-parameter Weibull distribution difficult. Therefore, this paper proposes an evolutionary strategy to explore the good solutions based on the maximum likelihood method. The maximizing process of likelihood function is converted to an optimization problem. The evolutionary algorithm is employed to obtain the optimal parameters for the likelihood function. Examples are presented to demonstrate the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method is suitable for the parameter estimation of the three-parameter Weibull distribution.
