Purpose – this paper presents the application of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) for risks ranking in a graphical form at the initial stages of the innovation process, by using the innovation potential as an output parameter of DEA. Research methodology – an example of the potential change of a given innovation under the influence of certain risk is presented. The data for the risk assessment and the reduction of the potential after the expression of the risks are given. On the bases of this data, a graph for the boundaries of the risk effectiveness is constructed, according to DEA models. Findings – DEA is applicable for the risk ranking, including for risks with equal effectiveness evaluations. Research limitations – the approach is applied to risks which are initially selected for ranking. The other types of risks are not considered, and they need separate research attention. Practical implications – the new approach may be used in the initial stages of product and process innovation. Originality/Value – the innovation potential is used as an output parameter in the DEA to graphically rank the risk of the initial innovation applications.

Research on the innovation process and its effective management has consistently highlighted a set of themes constituting "good practice". The limitation of such "good practice" is that it relates to what might be termed "steady state" innovation — essentially innovative activity in product and process terms which is about "doing what we do, but better". The prescription works well under these conditions of (relative) stability in terms of products and markets but is not a good guide when elements of discontinuity come into the equation. Discontinuity arises from shifts along technological, market, political and other frontiers and requires new or at least significantly adapted approaches to their effective management. This paper highlights empirical findings from a selection of companies involved in a project sponsored by the U.K. Department of Trade and Industry. The results indicate a number of key routines that organisations could implement to enable discontinuous innovation.

This article explores the innovation potential of the staff at industrial enterprises. The relevance of the research is confirmed by the increasing interest of companies in innovation. This manifests itself both in the changing organizational structure of enterprises and a new approach to human resource management, for instance, the revision of the key performance indicators of employees. One of the main goals of the research was determining the factors that influence the development of the innovation potential of staff and assessment of their impact. The institutional approach formed the conceptual basis of the study. It allowed the authors to consider the management of innovation potential as a special mechanism for achieving sustainability, stable development of an enterprise, and its strategic success in general. The authors established that organizational and administrative factors have the greatest influence on the formation and development of the innovation potential of staff, while the constraining factors are the lack of an innovative strategy, authoritarian management style, and bureaucratization. Studying the techniques aimed at the development of staff’s innovation potential, the authors concluded that the most effective ones for industrial enterprises are consultations of subject matter specialists. A significant novelty of this work is the model of interaction of participants in the innovation process developed by the authors. The research findings enabled the authors to devise recommendations for the formation and development of the innovation potential of the company’s employees.

PurposeThe main purpose of this paper is to propose a new approach to determine the project activities weight factors using data envelopment analysis. Afterward, the model is applied in Mobarkeh Steel Company as a case study. Accordingly, the project schedule and plans can be written on the basis of the gained weight factors.Design/methodology/approachThis study proposed an approach to determine the weights of activities using Data Envelopment Analysis. This approach consists of four phases. In the first phase, project activities are extracted based on the work breakdown structure. In the second phase, the parameters affecting the importance of activities are determined through a review of the related literature and based on the experts' opinions. In the third phase, the proper data envelopment analysis model is chosen and the inputs and outputs are signified. Then, the activities' weights are determined based on the efficiency numbers. Finally, the model is solved for the case of Isfahan Mobarakeh Steel Company.FindingsThe proposed method aimed to calculate the project activities weight factor. Thus, influential parameters on project activities importance include activity duration, activity cost, activity importance which includes successors and predecessors, activity difficulty which includes skill related (education and experience), safety, communication rate, intellectual effort, physical effort, unfavorable work conditions and work related hazards, have been recognized. Then, Projects' data were extracted from the organizational expert's opinions and recorded data in documents. Thereupon, applying DEA, the activities weight factor were calculated based on the efficiency numbers. The results show that the model is applicable and has promising benefits in real-world problems.Originality/valuePlanning is one the most fundamental steps of project management. The ever-growing business environment demands for more complex projects with larger number of activities wants more efficient project managers. Organizational resources are limited; therefore, activities planning is a critical from the perspectives of both managers and researchers. Knowing the importance of the activities can help to manage activities more efficient and to allocate time, budget, cost and other resources more accurate. Different elements such as cost, time, complexity, and difficulty can affect the activity weight factor. In this study, the proposed approach aims to determine the weights of activities using Data Envelopment Analysis.

Abstract Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a prominent technique for evaluating relative efficiency of a set of entities called decision making units (DMUs) with homogeneous structures. In order to implement a comprehensive assessment, undesirable factors should be included in the efficiency analysis. The present study endeavors to propose a novel approach for solving DEA model in the presence of undesirable outputs in which all input/output data are represented by triangular fuzzy numbers. To this end, two virtual fuzzy DMUs called fuzzy ideal DMU (FIDMU) and fuzzy anti-ideal DMU (FADMU) are introduced into proposed fuzzy DEA framework. Then, a lexicographic approach is used to find the best and the worst fuzzy efficiencies of FIDMU and FADMU, respectively. Moreover, the resulting fuzzy efficiencies are used to measure the best and worst fuzzy relative efficiencies of DMUs to construct a fuzzy relative closeness index. To address the overall assessment, a new approach is proposed for ranking fuzzy relative closeness indexes based on which the DMUs are ranked. The developed framework greatly reduces the complexity of computation compared with commonly used existing methods in the literature. To validate the proposed methodology and proposed ranking method, a numerical example is illustrated and compared the results with an existing approach.

New and innovative products are drivers for successful and sustainable growth of companies. Only a continuous stream of innovations can defend established market segments and create new markets for the company. Especially for European companies, innovations offer the opportunity for differentiation against competitors and therewith help to consist the present cost pressure mainly coming from Asian countries. Thereby, innovation inherent risks regarding limited product success, longer development times and quality lacks threaten the success of the innovation process. With this paper, a new approach is introduced, which aims at the reduction of the risks in the innovation processes. This is realized by shifting the focus from a customer requirement driven innovation screening to a product portfolio based innovation approach. The idea is to identify innovation opportunities within existing portfolios to maximize the use of existing company capabilities.
