The parasitic copepod Gauchergasilus euripedesi (Montú, 1980) Montú & Boxshall, 2002 was described from plankton samples and specimens found in four fish species from the estuarine area of Patos Lagoon, state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil. Later, one different fish species was reported parasitized with G. euripedesi in the same locality. Species of Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854 (Astyanax henseli Melo & Buckup, 2006 and Astyanax lacustris (Lütken, 1875)) and Psalidodon Eigenmann, 1911 (Psalidodon eigenmanniorum (Cope, 1894) and Psalidodon aff. fasciatus (Cuvier, 1819)) were collected in two environments (Pintada Island, municipality of Porto Alegre and Itapeva Lagoon, municipality of Terra de Areia, RS) to investigate their parasites. The copepods found in the gill arches were counted, processed, mounted in permanent slides, and photographed using light microscopy, or processed for observation in scanning electron microscopy. Specimens of P. eigenmanniorum from Pintada Island, A. lacustris and P. aff. fasciatus from Itapeva Lagoon, were parasitized by G. euripedesi, with prevalences of 29.03% (A. lacustris), 10.34% (P. eigenmanniorum), and 9.68% (P. aff. fasciatus). Measurements obtained for specimens of G. euripedesi were similar to those found in the literature, except for egg sacs which were larger in the specimens examined in the present study. In addition to being the first report of G. euripedesi parasitizing species of fish (A. lacustris, P. eigenmanniorum, and P. aff. fasciatus), the results presented here also extend the known geographic distribution of the copepod species.

Neopaxillus echinospermus is a common but poorly understood agaric species from South America (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay). In this paper, we discuss conflicting morphological features reported in the literature and expand the distribution of the species to Seasonal Deciduous and Semideciduous Forests from Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná states, respectively, in Southern Brazil. Hyphal structure of the pileipellis, presence of cheilocystidia and caulocystidia, presence of clamp connections and oleiferous (thrombopleurous) hyphae, and the basidiospore morphology under scanning electron microscopy are illustrated and discussed in detail.

The peritrich ciliates Vorticella veloxiiforme n.sp. and Vorticella ampullaria n.sp. were found as epibionts on the ampullarid mollusk Pomacea canaliculata collected from Patos Lagoon, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. The detailed morphology of both species was investigated using live and stained specimens, as well as scanning electron microscopy. Zooids of Vorticella veloxiiforme are cup shaped measuring 57 X 41 μm on average. A J-shaped macronucleus lies in the upper half of the cell. One contractile vacuole was observed in the upper part of the cell. V. ampullaria presents an elongate zooid measuring 70 X 25 µm on average. A C-shaped macronucleus lies in the middle of the cell. Two contractile vacuoles are present: one close to the peristome and the other in the lower half of the cell. The pattern of oral polykinetids was typical of the genus, with all infundibular polykinetids composed by three rows of kinetosomes each. SEM revealed a regular pattern of pores present on the zooid membrane of both species. Analyses of the 18s rDNA placed the two new species in the order Vorticellida close to described species of Vorticella.

A new species of the genus Nitzschia was found in epiphyton and microphytobenthos at the Patos Lagoon salt marsh (Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil). Nitzschia papillosa sp. nov. was described under light and scanning electron microscopy and compared with other species from the section Lanceolatae. The species presents features shared by several species of the genus such as a linear-lanceolate outline, cuneate ends and irregularly distributed fibulae. The distinguishable feature is a row of dots on the margin opposite to the fibulae. In scanning electron microscopy, these structures appear as silica excrescences, little rounded or squared, which we refer as papillae, situated at the transapical costae in the internal valve face. This is the first record of this kind of ornamentation in Nitzschia species.

In this study we verified data of water temperatures collected by CORSAN-RS from 1996 to 2004 in several cities of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, and analyzed the possibility of raising the most cultivated fish species in Brazil. The water temperature from 1996 to 2004 was 16 to 28ºC in summer, 17 to 23ºC in fall, 14 to 17ºC (down to 9ºC in the coldest months) in winter and 14 to 21ºC in spring. Native species of this state, such as silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen), traíra (Hoplias malabaricus), dorado (Salminus brasiliensis), pintado (Pimelodus maculatus), as well as carps (family Cyprinidae), are resistant to the low winter temperatures. These species have a lower growth rate in coldest months (winter/spring) but a good development in warmer months (summer/fall), reaching a satisfactory performance throughout the year. In the periods of more intense cold, mortality of some introduced species, such as surubim from Amazon Basin (Pseudoplatystoma sp.), pirapitinga (Piaractus brachypomus), pirarucu (Arapaimas gigas), pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus), tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) and Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) may occur. In addition, as most tropical species have a thermal range for growth and reproduction between 20 to 28ºC, some species may have poor development even in fall. Therefore, water temperature in this state should be considered in the choice of fish species to be cultivated.

Immature stages are known in only 11 species of the Thyreocoridae. In this paper, the eggs of Galgupha (Euryscytus)difficilis (Breddin) and Galgupha (Gyrocnemis) fossata McAtee & Malloch are described and illustrated. Egg morphologyand oviposition habit in the Thyreocoridae and Cydnidae are reviewed. Adults of both species were collected in SãoFrancisco de Paula municipality, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and maintained in the laboratory for oviposition. Theeggs were examined by stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy and photographed. In G. (E.) difficilis, theeggs were laid singly or in pairs; each egg is cylindrical (0.8 x 0.5 mm) and white and the chorion is shiny, translucent,and smooth; the micropylar processes (2–4) are short and stalked. In G. (G.) fossata, the eggs were laid singly; each eggis cylindrical (0.9 x 0.6 mm) and white and the chorion is shiny, translucent, and granulated; the micropylar processes (4–10) are short, stalked, and transversely constricted. The eggs of both species are similar to those of other thyreocorids,especially of other corimelaenines. The Thyreocoridae in the broadest sense (including the Parastrachiinae) is not auniform group concerning egg morphology, oviposition behavior, and maternal care. Within the Pentatomoidea, based onegg morphology, the Cydnidae is the group nearest to the Thyreocoridae. The evolution of the eggs in the Pentatomoidea should be investigated within a phylogenetic framework, including egg characters, in future cladistic analyses.

Ditaxodon taeniatus is a striped, racer-like colubrid snake inhabiting grassland savannas in southern Brazil. This species was described as Philodryas taeniatus by the then curator of the Museum für Naturkunde der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (formerly Zoologisches Museum Berlin, ZMB), Wilhelm Peters, from a single specimen collected by Reinhold Hensel in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. Peters’ description was published in a paper by Hensel (1868: 331) and, according to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN, 1999: Article 50.1, Recommendation 51E), the correct citation is Ditaxodon taeniatus (Peters in Hensel, 1868). Later, George A. Boulenger (1896: 124) transferred Philodryas taeniatus to the genus Conophis, and Alphonse R. Hoge (1958: 54) created for it the new genus Ditaxodon, which remains monotypic today.

Nigrohydnum nigrum Ryvarden is a rare polypore previously known only from two records in Brazil. During a herbarium revision at SP we have identified an old voucher specimen, extending the previously known geographic distribution to the Atlantic rain forest of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul State, Southern Brazil.

The distribution and abundance of the lesser electric ray, Narcine brasiliensis, was assessed based on bottom-trawl survey data collected off the coast of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Between 1980 and 1984 and in 2005, 416 bottom trawl hauls were carried out at depths of 10-100 m. Narcine brasiliensis occurred mainly in waters with bottom temperature between 20 and 25ºC. Density of the species was higher between the depths of 10 and 20 m, during the summer and autumn. The seasonal pattern of N. brasiliensis in the shallow coastal water of Rio Grande do Sul reflects a southward migration in summer. This is conditioned by the southward advance of warmer and high-salinity Tropical Water of the Brazil Current In winter, the return or northward migration is a response to seasonal cooling of the coastal waters and to the northward advance of cold Coastal Water of lower salinity. The latitudinal gradient in density of N. brasiliensis was related to the latitudinal gradient in salinity of the bottom waters. This was caused by the freshwater runoff from the Patos Lagoon establishing a physical barrier to the occurrence of the species farther south than the city of Rio Grande.

Knowledge about mammals of the Atlantic Forest is still lacking, especially because some places remain poorly studied or inventoried, which makes conservation initiatives difficult. We aimed to determine the species richness and composition of medium and large sized mammals in a semideciduous forest remnant, Morro do Coco, thus contributing information about the occurrence of mammalian fauna in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, southern Brazil. The methods consisted of interviews with local inhabitants, visual records and sand plot analysis. The study took place from July 2008 to April 2009, with monthly expeditions of three days. Sixteen species of mammals were recorded, seven of which are threatened with extinction in Rio Grande do Sul and one nationally. The predominant trophic group was the frugivorous/herbivorous. The study area is situated in a prioritized zone for the conservation of mammals in Greater Porto Alegre, since it consists of one of the last remnants where the phytophysionomies that originally occupied the edge of Guaiba Lake and granite hills of the region are represented and preserved.
