A series of small emergent coral reefs and shallow, submerged coralliferous banks are scattered along the western edge of Campeche Bank (southwest Gulf of Mexico), 150–200 km offshore from the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico. Here a reasonably comprehensive, annotated checklist of reef-associated fishes for one reef, Cayo Arcas (expanded from 162 to 209 species) is presented, with preliminary checklists of such fishes from three other emergent reefs (Cayo Arenas, Triángulo Oeste, Triángulo Este) and four submerged bank reefs (Banco Obispo Norte, Banco Obispo Sur, Banco Nuevo and Banco Pera). During 2017–18 a total of 260 species was observed or collected from those reefs, and previous studies and georeferenced museum records in the global aggregator Fishnet2 added another 101 shallow-living species recorded on or adjacent to those reefs. Some coral-reef fishes are thought to be strongly dependent on seagrass and mangrove areas as nursery habitats for maintenance of their local populations on reefs near to those habitats. The abundance of a number of such “nursery” species on these Campeche reefs indicates otherwise, as there are no seagrass- or mangrove habitats for reef fishes within ~ 150 km of the study reefs. Other isolated Caribbean-area reefs that lack mangroves and, in some cases, seagrasses, also support many such nursery species of reef-fishes.

Until now, 127 species of marine sponges have been recorded in the southern Gulf of Mexico (SGoM). In this study, we describe the sponge fauna recorded on 16 coral reefs of the SGoM, defined as the Mexican waters of the Gulf of Mexico (GoM), during a period from 2005 to 2019. We report 80 sponge species, including 34 first geographic records for the southern GoM region. The latter are fully described and illustrated, taking into account 24 that represent new records for the GoM: Agelas conifera, Agelas sventres, Agelas wiedenmayeri, Prosuberites carriebowensis, Desmanthus meandroides, Cliona aprica, Cliona dioryssa, Placospongia ruetzleri, Haliclona (Gellius) megasclera, Haliclona (Reniera) aff. portroyalensis, Neopetrosia proxima, Xestospongia arenosa, Calyx podatypa, Shiphonodictyon xamaycaense, Acarnus innominatus, Iotrochota arenosa, Polymastia tenax, Svenzea cristinae, Svenzea flava, Svenzea tubulosa, Svenzea zeai, Timea stenosclera, Stellettinopsis megastylifera, Suberea flavolivescens. The present work highlights the understimated and remarkable diversity of reef-associated sponges within the Campeche Bank Coral reef systems. Present work data was compiled with existing published information to produce an updated list of 161 known sponges in the southern GoM.

Healthy reefs provide a habitat for an immense number of fish that come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colours. No other natural habitat in the ocean shows this diversity and abundance. About a quarter of all marine species may be found on coral reefs even though this habitat occupies only one or two per cent of the area of the earth. ‘Reef fish and other major predators’ describes the diverse feeding ecology of reef fishes; coral reef predators such as the colourful crown of thorns starfish, Acanthaster plancii; symbiotic relationships between different species of fish or with different invertebrates; and the dangers of overfishing in reef communities.

Seagrass beds and coral reefs are both considered critical habitats for reef fishes, and in tropical coastal regions, they often grow together to form “mosaic” habitats. Although reef fishes clearly inhabit such structurally complex environments, there is little known about their habitat usage in seagrass-coral mosaic habitats. The goal of this study was to examine potential factors that drive habitat usage pattern by juvenile reef fishes. We quantified (1) prey availability, (2) potential competitors, and 3) predators across a gradient of mosaic habitats (n = 4 habitat types) for four dominant carnivorous fishes (lethrinids and lutjanids) in the main recruitment season at Dongsha Island, South China Sea. We found that the coral-dominated habitats had not only a higher availability of large crustacean prey but also a higher abundance of competitors and predators of juvenile fishes. Food availability was the most important factor underlying the habitat usage pattern by lethrinids and lutjanids through ontogeny. The predation pressure exhibited a strong impact on small juvenile lethrinids but not on larger juveniles and lutjanids. The four juvenile fishes showed distinct habitat usage patterns through ontogeny. Collectively, mosaic habitats in the back reef system may be linked to key ontogenetic shifts in the early life histories of reef fishes between seagrass beds and coral reefs.

Ekosistem terumbu karang merupakan kekayaan sumberdaya laut yang memiliki peranan penting dalam mendukung kehidupan berbagai organisme perairan. Salah satu organisme yang memiliki ketergantungan hidup pada terumbu karang adalah ikan karang. Hal ini dikarenakan ikan karang melalui fase hidup sebagian atau seluruhnya di terumbu karang, sehingga terumbu karang menjadi tempat tinggal, tempat mencari makan, tempat berlindung dan tempat berkembang biak.  Penelitian dilaksanakan pada bulan Mei 2017, dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui persentase tutupan karang hidup dan kelimpahan ikan. Serta hubungan persentase tutupan karang dengan kelimpahan ikan karang pada sisi Barat dan Timur Pulau Menjangan Kecil kedalaman 1 dan 3 meter. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode observasi lapangan, dengan metode sampling menggunakan transek garis (line transect) pada data karang dan visual census untuk data ikan sepanjang 25m. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Persentase rata-rata tutupan karang yang diperoleh pada kedalaman 1 meter sisi Barat adalah 73,39%, sedangkan pada kedalaman 3 meter adalah 85,97%. Persentase tutupan karang pada kedalaman 1 meter sisi Timur adalah 63,73%, sedangkan pada kedalaman 3 meter adalah 77,61%. Secara keseluruhan kondisi terumbu karang masih tergolong baik. Kelimpahan rata-rata ikan pada sisi Barat kedalaman 1 meter adalah 70 individu/125 m2, sedangkan pada kedalaman 3 meter adalah 232 individu/125 m2. Kelimpahan ikan sisi Timur kedalaman 1 dan 3 meter masing-masing adalah 49 dan 138 individu/125 m2. Hasil perhitungan indeks korelasi secara keseluruhan menghasilkan nilai 0,8415 dengan koefesien determinasi sebesar 0,7081. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa pola hubungan persentase tutupan karang dengan kelimpahan ikan karang kuat (signifikan) dan positif (searah). Coral reef ecosystem is a wealth of marine resources that have an important role in supporting the life of various aquatic organisms. One of the organisms that has a living dependence on coral reefs is reef fish. This is because coral fish through a partial or complete life phase on the coral reef, so that coral reefs become a place to live, a place to find food, shelter and breeding ground. The study was conducted in May 2017, with the objective of knowing the percentage of live coral cover and fish abundance. And the correlation of percentage of coral cover with abundance of reef fish on West and East side of Menjangan Kecil Island depth of 1 and 3 meters. The method used is field observation method, with sampling method using line transect on coral data and visual census for fish data along 25m. The results of this study indicate that the average percentage of coral cover obtained at a depth of 1 meter west side is 73.39%, while at a depth of 3 meters is 85.97%. The percentage of coral cover at depth of 1 meter East side is 63,73%, while at depth 3 meter is 77,61%. Overall the condition of coral reefs is still quite good. The average abundance of fish on the west side of 1 meter depth is 70 individuals / 125 m2, while at 3 meters depth is 232 individuals / 125 m2. The abundance of fish on Eastern side, depth of 1 and 3 meters respectively were 49 and 138 individu / 125 m2. Result of calculation of correlation index as a whole yield value 0,8415 with coefficient of determination equal to 0,7081. This shows that the pattern of correlation of percentage of coral cover with abundance of reef fish is strong (significant) and positive (unidirectional).

Coastal areas and sea have the potential biological resources large enough, because supported by three main ecosystem the ecosystem mangrove, seagrass beds and coral reefs. To maintain the existence of the ecosystem, control in coastal areas need to conducted one of them is inventory damage ecosystem especially ecosystem coral reefs. On the island of Bungkutoko lack or information on the coral reefs ecosystem is the island Barrang Lompo in addition the information and data on the ecosystem.  The purpose of this research is to get data teachers’ marital status and a condition of damage the ecosystem to coral reefs as a second the island. The research results obtained, a covering of coral reef island Bungkutoko depth 5m and 10m namely 36,47% and 41,67% category ‘being’. The island Barrang Lompo station 1 the depth of 5m and 10m namely 38,67% and 42,53% category ‘being’, station 2  covering 23,27% category ‘broken’. To scattery if coral reefs Bungkutoko island 231.31 ha, the Barrang Lompo island 127.47 ha. The level of damage/index mortalities on the island of Bungkutoko depth 5m and 10m namely 0,5593% and 0,6201% category ‘being’. The island Barrang Lompo station 1 depth 5m and 10m namely 0,6011% and 0,5504% category ‘being’, station 2 the level of damage/index mortalities 0,7326% category ‘high’.

Coral reefs is a center for biodiversity in the world with a complex architecture and has an aesthetics value. It also offers beneficial for human being in many aspects such as economics, social and culture. Research was conducted in July 2016 and aim to understand community structure and biomass of coral reef fishes in Tapanuli Tengah waters. Result from all stations in Tapanuli Tengah waters showed that 49 species from seven families of economically reef fish i.e.  Acanthuridae, Serranidae, Haemulidae, Lutjanidae, Lehtrinidae, Siganidae and Scaridae were found. Density average of those seven families was 163 individual/350 m<sup>2</sup> or 4668 individual/ha with biomass average of 1.564 ton/ha. Moreover, biomass from other target fishes from nine families was accounted as 0.56 ton/ha. On the other hand, over all coralifore fish represented by Chaetodontidae was eight species from two genus, namely <em>Chaetodon</em> and <em>Heniochus </em>with four species. The density from family Chaetodotidae varies among station between 3-28 individual/350 m<sup>2</sup>

Wilayah perairan memiliki sumberdaya pesisir yang beragam, salah satunya Echinodermata. Echinodermata (echinoderm) berasal dari Bahasa Yunani echin (berduri) derma (kulit). Secara umum Echinodermata merupakan organisme laut yang pergerakannya sangat lambat. Filum Echinodermata memiliki lima kelas diantaranya kelas Asteroidea yang mempunyai lima lengan atau lebih yang memanjang dan memiliki tubuh radikal yang berwujud bintang (stellate), serta memiliki rangka yang dapat mampu membantu dalam pergerakan. Tubuh Asteroidea memiliki dua bagian ialah bagian aboral (dorsal) dan oral (ventral).   Kelas Asteroidea memiliki genus Protoreaster yang banyak dijumpai di Pantai Salibabu. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk menganalisis pola sebaran bintang laut berduri (Protoreaster nodosus) di Pantai Salibabu. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu purposive sampling dengan menggunakan plot 1 m x 1 m. Lokasi penelitian yaitu padang lamun, batu berpasir, dan terumbu karang. Bintang laut (Protoreaster nodosus) yang didapat pada bulan Desember 2018 berjumlah 48 individu pada ketiga lokasi. Pada lokasi padang lamun (I) ditemukan 22 individu; batu berpasir (II) ditemukan 13 individu; pada terumbu karang (III) ditemukan 13 individu, sedangkan pada bulan Januari 2019 total individu berjumlah 51 individu pada padang lamun ditemukan 28 individu, batu berpasir ditemukan 14, dan terumbu karang berjumlah 9 individu. Pola sebaran bintang laut berduri pada ketiga lokasi penelitian  memiliki pola sebaran  yang mengelompok dan acak pada pengamatan sampel bulan Desember 2018 dan bulan Januari 2019The waters have diverse coastal resources, one of which is Echinoderms. Echinoderms (echinoderm) are derived from the Greek echin (thorny) derma (skin). In general, Echinoderms are marine organisms that move very slowly. Phylum Echinodermata has five classes, one of which is the Asteroidea class, which has five or more arms that are elongated and has a radical body in the form of a star (stellate), and has a frame that can be able to assist in movement. Asteroidea's body has two parts: the aboral (dorsal) and oral (ventral) parts. The Asteroidea class has the Protoreaster genus which is commonly found on Salibabu Beach. The purpose of this study was to analyze the distribution pattern of thorny starfish (Protoreaster nodosus) on Salibabu Beach. The method used in this study is purposive sampling using 1 m x 1 m quadratic plot. The research locations are seagrass beds, sandy rocks, and coral reefs. Starfish (Protoreaster nodosus) obtained in December 2018 totaled 48 individuals in all three locations. At the location of seagrass (I) 22 individuals were found; sandstone (II) found 13 individuals; on coral reef (III) 13 individuals were found, while in January 2019 a total of 51 individuals; in the seagrass found 28 individuals, sandy stones found 14, and coral reefs amounted to 9 individuals. The distribution pattern of thorny starfish in the three study sites has a regular distribution pattern on sample observations in December 2018 and January 2019.
