Introduced reverse engineering technology and working principle. Researched reverse design process of the complex curved surface "spider". The data were collected by means of multiple scanning measuring with laser scanner. Used Geomagic Studio software for date point cloud processed of complex curved surface. Used UG software for surface reconstruction designed. Product reduction and improvement of the design were finished rapidly and high quality. Model of spider was printed with rapid prototyping technology. Compared with physical, the model’s reliability and accuracy were verified by reverse engineering design.Keywords: complex surface; reverse engineering technology; UG; Geomagic Studio software

The complex surface is modeled by triangular surface, B-spline or non-uniform rational B-spline first and then the planing of the cutter is followed in reverse engineering. But this require CAD/CAM software and operator’s experiene. Because of this,the research on direct NC cutter generation from point cloud have become the focus of research in reverse engineering. The normal,curvature,surface vary et al parameters are calculated by principle component analysis method and so on, which define the local feature of the surface hidden in the point cloud. Then,based on local feature,point cloud is simplified. It is proved that two points with minimal orientation-distance on a pair of smooth surfaces are conjugate points. Thus the conjugate problem between the tool surface and the part surface is converted into optimization process of orientation-distance function. The cutter trace and the cutter interference are achieved by local and global optization of the orientation-distance function.

The integration of multi-view data in the acquisition of complex surface is researched by using the CMM (coordinate measuring machine) and the laser tracking scanning system. A multi-view data integration method based on the auxiliary reference plane is presented. With the precise auxiliary reference plane, the data measured by the different measuring devices and measuring views are aligned and the accuracy is analyzed. If the error is controlled in a certain range, this method can satisfy the demands of the model and assembly. The problems of low-efficient and low-accuracy in the data fusion of complex surface during the reverse engineering are solved. Meanwhile, the advantages of the different measuring devices and measuring methods are developed. This method has been applied to the reverse engineering development for a motorcycle cover model. The practical result shows that this new method is feasible and efficient.

In the current work, a new error evaluation methodology is introduced based on error analysis in ship production with reverse engineering data. The aim is to determine the errors and prevent or reduce the occurrence in other projects. First step is to compose a database of the errors; then, group the similar errors and calculate the Error Priority Number (EPN) by the evaluation of the predetermined criteria. The radar diagrams, which are suitable for representing a number of parameters having the same variables, were used to present the error groups in a simple way. The error groups were created on the diagram with the scores taken from the specific criteria. With the aid of the radar diagram, valuable information is given by presenting similarities and dissimilarities of these errors with other error groups. After examining the radar diagrams and evaluating the results, the cause and effect diagrams were prepared for these error groups from the field experts. Thus, the methodology should be customized for the shipyard to ensure maximum efficiency.

A software package for the reverse engineering of surface forms commonly found in manufactured objects is presented. An object's surface is digitized using a three-dimensional, laser-based scanner that produces accurate and copious data files. Complex surface forms are reconstructed by interactively segmenting the multiple-surface patches, invoking the appropriate surface modelling routine and transferring the resulting surfaces to a CAD package via a standard IGES entity. Examples of the accuracy of the laser scanner data, and software algorithms for modelling planes, cylinders, cones and spheres, are presented by performing comparisons with results generated by a coordinate measuring machine. The paper concentrates on the novel software process to model the principal quadric forms; however, the program's capabilities do extend to free-form surfaces.

According to the combined application of the reverse technology and the rapid prototyping , which is necessary for the complex design and the concept design of part surface, the text firstly introduce the method of gathering reverse data by ATOS measuring system and the technology of blending triangular Bezier surface . Second, it analyses the optimized disposition of method of reverse data which is related to the technology of rapid prototyping . Third, the trial has been done about the interface files generated and linked the device of rapid prototyping and model processing trial.
