Introduced reverse engineering technology and working principle. Researched reverse design process of the complex curved surface "spider". The data were collected by means of multiple scanning measuring with laser scanner. Used Geomagic Studio software for date point cloud processed of complex curved surface. Used UG software for surface reconstruction designed. Product reduction and improvement of the design were finished rapidly and high quality. Model of spider was printed with rapid prototyping technology. Compared with physical, the model’s reliability and accuracy were verified by reverse engineering design.Keywords: complex surface; reverse engineering technology; UG; Geomagic Studio software

The concept, processes and research status of reverse engineering are introduced. The application of reverse engineering technology on food packaging is illustrated by introducing the process of rebuilding a model for a biscuit box, including acquiring point cloud data of the biscuit box, processing data and materializing model. The results show that a high quality model of sample can be rebuild by reverser engineering. It is a effective method in innovation design on food packaging by reverser engineering technology.

The processes and methods of reverse engineering are presented in detail through a practical case in this paper. Point cloud acquisition, data processing and model reconstruction are the key techniques in reverse engineering. The sample’s point cloud acquired by laser scanner is processed in Geomagic, and the boundary and characteristic line are extracted simultaneity. Finally, the surfaces are constructed and modified, and the CAD model is reconstructed in NX. The research indicates that the reconstruction data by reverse engineering is an effective technique, which can bring about high quality model and improve efficiency.

The complex surface is modeled by triangular surface, B-spline or non-uniform rational B-spline first and then the planing of the cutter is followed in reverse engineering. But this require CAD/CAM software and operator’s experiene. Because of this,the research on direct NC cutter generation from point cloud have become the focus of research in reverse engineering. The normal,curvature,surface vary et al parameters are calculated by principle component analysis method and so on, which define the local feature of the surface hidden in the point cloud. Then,based on local feature,point cloud is simplified. It is proved that two points with minimal orientation-distance on a pair of smooth surfaces are conjugate points. Thus the conjugate problem between the tool surface and the part surface is converted into optimization process of orientation-distance function. The cutter trace and the cutter interference are achieved by local and global optization of the orientation-distance function.

Reverse engineering technology has been widely used in engineering design field. This paper proposed a CATIA-modeling-based reverse engineering technology for vehicle rear axle design. The general process for reverse engineering includes the pretreatment of the point cloud data, the establishment of the grid, the surface reconstruction of parts, the analysis of curved surface, and so on. Finally, the paper puted forward practical and feasible solution to the problem.

National handcrafts are well-known at home and Abroad for their fine ingredients, exquisite blending of colors, and excellent skilled shaping and painting. What is more, they have great value and are deeply popular with people around the world. National handcrafts, as a cultural crystallization, must be protected. In order to better realize the protection, we try to apply the technology of reverse engineering to the protection. This article mainly takes a handcraft, Yan Zi YU (meaning “swallow fish”), as an example to expound and demonstrate the process of reverse engineering technology. During this process, by using scanning technology of reverse engineering, the collection and splicing of the point cloud data, the theoretical analysis of the NURBS surface in the reconstruction phase, and other practical operations in other stages, reverse engineering can be used to regenerate 3D modal data of the swallow fish and to inspect and analyse the errors in it through Geomagic Quality to ensure that the new model meets the precision requirements. Therefore, the reverse engineering technology can be completely applied to the protection of national handcrafts so that they can fully demonstrate their own value and function. If the precision of reverse engineering detection can reach nanometric level, a breakthrough will promote the protection of cultural relics.

Reverse Engineering (RE) and Rapid Prototyping (RP) were used for manufacturing cream bottle. Points cloud data of cream bottle was accessed by handheld laser scanner firstly. Then, points cloud data was handed by Imageware software and the three-dimensional model was formed by Solidworks software. Finally, the entity model was manufacturing by RP machine. In the research, rapid prototyping was combined with reverse engineering technology, manufacturing cycle was shorten, production requirements, improve efficiency and other advantages were met.

This paper introduces the basic conception of the reverse engineering, process of digital measurement and 3-D modeling method based RE technology: one is based on point-curve-curved surface reconstruction, and the other is based on point-curved surface fitting directly. According to the first method, the processes of data gathering, cloud data processing and 3-D model rebuilding are introduced through reconstructing the 3-D models of the gauge board and left board in Imageware and UGNX. Using the reverse engineering technology in product design will shorten the period of developing a new product and accelerate it’s response to the market.

This paper analyzes the structure of molding tool for composite component, and proposes a method of surface design of molding tool based on reverse engineering. By using handy laser scanner, the point cloud data is obtained from the composite component, which is processed in Geomagic Studio. Then the processed data is imported into CATIA for Surface fitting. The surface of molding tool for composite component is rapidly and accurately designed by analyzing 3D error and comparing cross-sectional data.

3D laser scanning is one of the key technologies of reverse engineering. Digital point cloud is produced by the rapid scanning technology. Some technology about reverse engineering is introduced in this thesis. The curved surface can be generated by the point cloud processing, when the point cloud can be processed by the software called Geomagic Studio.
