The study examined the household's decision-making role in small scale goat production in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria. Data for the study were collected from 74 households through the use of interview schedule. Frequency distributions and percentages were used in the data analysis. The findings showed that production of manure for replenishing the lost soil fertility under continuous land use was the most valuable reason for rearing goats in the area. The husbands played a larger decision-making role than their wives for certain aspects (such as goat raising initiation; health care; herd-size; planning for organizing for breedings; and grass cutting) of goat production. Implications of the findings for extension practice were presented.

Benchmarking techniques are useful and simple tools to analyze the performance of the collective irrigation in the Water User Associations (WUAs) towards an increase in service sustainability. Several benchmarking techniques have been proposed to process and predict performance indicators. Instead, some meaningful statistical techniques based on the distance of data samples, which overcome the limitations of the traditional benchmarking techniques, have never been applied to the collective irrigation sector. This study applies Permutational Multivariate Analysis of Variance (PERMANOVA), Multidimensional Scale Models (MDS), and Distance-Based Linear Models (DISTLM) as benchmarking techniques to evaluate the technical and financial performances of 10 WUAs in Calabria (Southern Italy). These benchmarking techniques revealed that the significant differences in the irrigated areas and financial self-sufficiency of the WUAs, shown by PERMANOVA, depend on the large variability of the remaining performance indicators. Both the MDS and DISTLM demonstrated that a higher number of associated users and larger irrigation service coverage allows an increase in the irrigated areas; this enlargement is facilitated if the water price and the size of the personnel staff decrease. The WUAs’ self-sufficiency is mainly influenced by the number of workers and the maintenance, organization, and management costs, while the impacts of the due service fees and water price are more limited; it is also convenient to increase the number of the associated farmers since this increases the economy of scale and the gross revenues of the irrigation service. Overall, from the analysis carried out for the regional case study, these benchmarking techniques seem to be powerful and easy tools to identify the problems of the irrigation service and help in planning the most suitable policies to improve the sustainability of the collective irrigation at the regional scale.

Quality is considered the most indispensable means to compete in the marketplace for all food companies. Apart from the objective quality concerning the physical – chemical – microbiological characteristics, which links to the concept of food security; the subjective quality concerning the quality as perceived by consumers is utmost important since it links to the concept of consumer demand [1]. This paper proposed a new methodology which aimed to assess the subjective quality as follows: (1) to examine whether consumers could perceive and/or understand the quality criteria used by experts to assess the product quality, and (2) in case consumers could do, to investigate whether these expert criteria related to the consumer-perceived quality. This methodology is based on the traditional conjoint analysis combining with an add-on, the sorting task. Consumers are asked to sort 9 pictures of bananas, and then to rate the pictures according to their perception of the perceived quality presenting on the pictures. The methodology will be illustrated through a case study performed on Vietnamese consumers. The results showed that: (1) consumers could perceive the experts’ quality criteria such as bruise, shape, and color; and (2) the consumer-perceived quality related to these expert quality criteria. In addition, the results also showed that bruise was the most important attribute affect consumer appreciation of quality. For practical application, we expected that this methodology could provide useful information about the subjective quality for those researchers who want to improve the quality based on consumer demand.
