An Assessment of Digital Library Functions and Services in Nigerian Academic Libraries

This chapter critically assess digital library functions and services in Nigeria academic libraries. It highlighted the roles of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) that brought about digital libraries. It is a collection of digital contents that is housed electronically and made available to users. The advantages of digital library were also discussed such as improved access, improved information preservation, it improved information sharing, it enhances library functions and services. Nigerian academic libraries has benefited from the enormous benefits of digital library. The chapter stressed that effort should be improved consortium building so as to improve the services Nigerian libraries render to their patrons. The chapter concludes that Digital library has come a long way in Nigeria, and 21st century libraries cannot afford to render services to users without digital contents added to the prints resources. Therefore, Nigeria libraries and information centres must cooperate in a formal consortia building; this will go a long way to reduce the burden of all participating libraries.

This paper provides an overview of a case study research that investigated the use of Digital Library (DL) resources in two undergraduate classes and explored faculty and students' perceptions of educational digital libraries. This study found that students and faculty use academic DLs primarily for textual resources, but turn to the open Web for visual and multimedia resources. The study participants did not perceive academic libraries as a useful source of digital images and used search engines when searching for visual resources. The limited use of digital library resources for teaching and learning is associated with perceptions of usefulness and ease of use, especially if considered in a broader information landscape, in conjunction with other library information systems, and in the context of Web resources. The limited use of digital libraries is related to the following perceptions: 1) Library systems are not viewed as user-friendly, which in turn discourages potential users from trying DLs provided by academic libraries; 2) Academic libraries are perceived as places of primarily textual resources; perceptions of usefulness, especially in regard to relevance of content, coverage, and currency, seem to have a negative effect on user intention to use DLs, especially when searching for visual materials.

The principal concern of this article is to provide researchers and practitioners in information science and technology with legal references on the concepts, issues, trends, and frameworks of intellectual property protection regarding multimedia digital library in engineering manner. Digital library is the global information infrastructure in the networked society (Borgman, 2003). A digital library, as an information system, consists of digital contents in databases and retrieval mechanisms. The right protection of digital library is a critical issue in the digital library community that demands frameworks for recouping their investment in database design and system implementation. Intellectual property law gives incentive to advance appropriate investment in database design and implementation with two types of intellectual property protection: copyright and patent (Jakes & Yoches, 1989; Junghans & Levy, 2006). Multimedia digital contents take a variety of forms including text, images, photos, and video streams, which often commingle in multimedia digital libraries. Nevertheless, present legal studies are not satisfactory as the source of technical interpretation of the intellectual properties regarding multimedia digital libraries. The intellectual property protection of the multimedia digital libraries demands clear and concise frameworks.

Preservation of digital resources in the 21st century has been a great challenge for library and information professionals. Digital libraries have been built all over the world. Libraries are engaged in creating and maintaining digital libraries. One of the main challenges in maintaining digital libraries is the digital preservation aspect. The aim of digital preservation is to ensure that digital records are filed and are made available through time. Digital information preservation is always the thinking of library and information society. Preservation of digital documents has now become more obvious and necessary because of the fragility of digital data and software and hardware platforms becoming obsolete. The present chapter focuses on the digital preservation, strategies, policies, functions, current activities, and guideline of digital preservation of information.

The ethics backbone for information and communications technologies (ICT) guides the evolution of the socio-technical spaces and technologies on the WWW and Internet. This backbone directs the ways people harness information for education and social betterment; how they create virtual communities, and what digital contents they share. There are numerous stakeholders to transformative e-learning throughout the world, both now and in the future. To achieve the realities of transformative e-learning that leads to social equality, it helps to first understand the guiding ethical values underpinning these technologies; in addition, it will be important to engage these ethics and to shape them in ways that would optimize e-learning as a force for the greater good. In an information society, e-learning educators need a solid grasp of ICT-based ethical reasoning and practice.

The 21st century shifted the world communities to an “electronic” stage of evolution. Drastic changes can be visualized in literature, linguistics and other humanitarian sciences. The greatest attention is paid to the promotion of linguistic researches, which are oriented towards electronic documenting of the language as well as on the intensive usage of digital methodologies and modern technologies. The reliance on these “technics” enables contemporary Georgian scientists to achieve principally new results and verify different models or hypotheses. Despite these circumstances, a lot must be done in the sphere of Kartvelology. The paper presents the university projects, which are oriented towards: involvement of students in researching activities dealing with the corpus-building;promotion of the development of digital Kartvelology; facilitation of creation of Georgian and foreign  scholars’ digital library and  text-corpus;development of Georgian scientific meta-language, etc. Therefore, promotion of digitalization, development of scientific meta-language, facilitation of the preservation of well-known scholars’ works, creation of digital libraries and establishment of modern methods crucial for the promotion of up-to-date teaching processes  – these are the main issues of our paper and  integral problems of today’s educational world. The methodology of research includes observation, analysis and evaluation of ongoing projects and their already-achieved/future outcomes. Certain prospects are visualised.

Information sharing has become prevalent due to the expansion of social networking in this 21st century. However, electronic devices are vulnerable to various kinds of attacks. Information might be disclosed, modified and accessed by an unauthorised third party which consequently leads to the breach of confidentiality, integrity and availability of the information. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to employ the technology of cryptography and steganography to protect information assets. Cryptography and steganography have weaknesses when they are working alone. Therefore, crypto-steganography, the combination of cryptography and steganography are introduced to overcome the weaknesses in order to provide a double layer of security and protection. This paper provides a general overview of steganography and cryptography as well as a comparison analysis of different crypto-steganographic schemes. A secure crypto-steganographic system for healthcare is then developed with the implementation and integration of the secure crypto-steganographic scheme proposed by Juneja and Sandhu. This healthcare system enables users to store and deliver message in a more secure way while achieving the main goals of both cryptography and steganography.
