“At the early stages of its establishment the stock market is a complement rather than substitute for the banking sector. Developing the banking sector can promote stock market development as demonstrated by the experiences of many East Asian countries. However, when stock markets are sufficiently developed they tend to compete with the banking sector as shown by findings.” How does commercial banking impact investment activities in capital markets – and particularly developed capital markets? Is it true then that in certain economies, the banking sector serves as a complementary component of the financial system – up till a stage where it begins to compete with the securities sector? As well as investigating these observations, this chapter is aimed at investigating the validity of Efficient Markets Hypothesis and Efficient Capital Markets Hypothesis in emerging economies – as contrasted with advanced market economies. In so doing, it aims to contribute to the extant literature on stock market liquidity and liquidity in capital markets.

Results appear to confirm the theory that stock market liquidity impacts and influences the ability of the market to fully reflect information. The impact of the sizes and development of capital markets on users of financial information will also be considered in this chapter – as well as other factors which could have a possible impact on the value relevance of accounting information. So will the issue of Shadow Banking and recent financial regulatory reforms which embrace the Dodd Frank legislation – as well as Liikannen, Vickers, Volcker rules and reports.

This paper provides new evidence that sheds light on the influence of institutional quality on financial development using data from Middle East and North African (MENA) countries over the period of 1984-2007. To measure institutional quality we construct a yearly composite index (INST) using the International Country Risk Guide’s (ICRG). The results of both panel data and IV techniques of estimation show that the institutional quality is more relevant for banking sector than for stock market development. Examining the impact of five sub-indicators of the composite ICRG index on financial sector development, we find that some institutional aspects matter more than others do. While law and order are the most relevant determinant of banking sector development, corruption and investment profile are of secondary importance for banking sector development. We also find that, investment profile is the most relevant determinant of stock market development. It has a positive significant effect on market index and stock market liquidity.

This paper provides new evidence on the influence of macroeconomic environment and institutional quality on stock market development, using data from 14 MENA countries over the period of 1990-2007. Using both panel data and instrumental variable techniques, we found that income level, saving rate, stock market liquidity, and interest rate influence stock market development with the expected theoretical signs. Our results also showed that the banking and the stock market sectors are complementary instead of being substitutes. We found that the institutional environment as captured by a composite policy risk index does not appear to be a driving force for the stock market capitalization in the region. Our last results are robust to different specifications and empirical techniques.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the macroeconomic drivers of stock market development in Hong Kong during the period 1992Q4-2016Q3. Specifically, it investigates the impact of banking sector development, economic growth, inflation rate, exchange rate, trade openness and stock market liquidity on stock market development. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses quarterly time-series data covering the period 1992Q4-2016Q3, which have been obtained from various reliable sources. The study uses the autoregressive distributed lag bounds testing procedure to identify both the long- and short-run macroeconomic drivers of stock market development in Hong Kong. Findings We find that banking sector development and economic growth have positive impacts on stock market development, whereas the inflation rate and the exchange rate have negative impacts on stock market development both in the long and short run. In addition, the results show that trade openness has a positive long-run impact but a negative short-run impact on stock market development. Originality/value Despite the phenomenal growth of stock market in Hong Kong, there are, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, no relevant studies on the macroeconomic drivers of stock market development in Hong Kong. Therefore, this paper endeavours to enrich the literature by examining the macroeconomic drivers of stock market development in Hong Kong during the period 1992Q4-2016Q3.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between financial development, openness in financial services trade and economic growth in BRICS countries for the period 1990–2012. Design/methodology/approach An index for financial development has been constructed using principal component analysis technique by including banking sector development, stock market development, bond market development and insurance sector development. For the robustness of the result, the long-run cointegrating relationship amongst the variables has been analyzed. Findings Overall financial development has a positive and significant impact on economic growth. To take the full advantage of openness in financial services trade, countries need to put more emphasis on the development of their stock markets, bond markets and the insurance sector. The result shows that openness in financial services trade has a positive impact on economic growth when the stock market, bond market and insurance sector are included in the system. Research limitations/implications The policy implication of the findings is that policymakers should focus more on developing all four areas of finance to get the full benefit of the financial system on the process of economic growth. Originality/value The authors have constructed the better indicators of financial development in the case of BRICS economies. Most of the studies in BRICS economies have measured the development of the financial sector as either banking sector development or stock market development. However, the present study includes all four areas of finance (banking sector development, stock market development, insurance sector development and bond market development) into account.

This paper uses bank level data of 26 commercial banks for the period 2001–2010 to explore determinants of net interest margins of commercial banks of Pakistan. Based on results of this study, past net interest margins, bank soundness, operating cost, industry concentration, relative market share, inflation, real depreciation and industrial growth have statistically significant and positive impact while diversification, change in bank size, lagged liquidity, stock market development have dampening effects on net interest margins. However, impact of ownership, GDP and credit market development is statistically insignificant. Our regression results suggest that stock market development as means of alternative source of finance contributes to reduction in net interest margins while the impact of banking sector development on breaking banking cartels and bringing net interest margins down had been insignificant. Exchange rate adjustments, rate of inflation and growth of the industry also cannot be ignored in management of net interest margins. Incentives for bank executives and managers to ensure efficiency in operating costs, reduction in the premium charged for bank soundness, diversification of bank activities and passing on the scale efficiencies to both depositors and borrowers can also play role to bring interest margins down to accelerate investment and growth in the country.

The newly elected government of the Pakistan considered corruption as a main hurdle in long-term development of the country on one hand. On the other hand, it is put emphasis on enhancing remittances to maintain Marco-economic stability in Pakistan. Therefore, the aim of this study is to highlight the effects of remittance, quality of governance and financial development in Pakistan for the time 2000 to 2016 using Ordinary Least Square Method (OLS). The aftermaths of the study has shown the positive influence of remittance, quality of governance and financial development on economic development in Pakistan. Conversely, as expected the sign of inflation is negative with in-significant effect. Furthermore, the present study has categorized financial development into banking sector and stock market development to explore their effects separately. For this purpose, two indicators have chosen for banking sector and two for stock market development. Lastly, this paper uses various diagnostic tests to check the various econometric issues in the given models. The results of the diagnostic tests have showed that residual is normally distributed, homoscedastic and absence of serial correlation in all the given models. Moreover, descriptive statistics also shows that variables of present study are normally distributed. In sum, based on the findings this research recommends that by improving the quality of the governance and by increasing the remittances long-term economic growth is possible in Pakistan. In addition, financial development is also an important determinant of growth in Pakistan. Therefore, government focus on eradicating corruption and increasing remittances are the right policies for economy of Pakistan in the long run.

This paper examined the relationship between economic growth, inflation, stock market development, and banking sector development for a panel of sixteen high-income countries for the period from 2001 to 2016, by using the mechanism impulse response functions and Granger causality tests derived from a panel vector autoregressive model. The evidence of bidirectional causality between all variables in the model was found. Overall, feedback and supply-leading theories have been confirmed in the literature. A plus sign in the relationship between the development of the banking sector and the stock market with economic growth was found. Therefore, stock market development and banking sector development stimulate the economy.

Development of non-oil sector of Azerbaijan was always one of the main priorities of the government. Oil sector of the economy was well developed since Azerbaijan got its independence, but in order to use the oil source more effectively it was determined to diversify the funds into non-oil sector of the economy, which in the end gave huge boost to most industries of the economy and led to increase of foreign direct investment. However, another source of the foreign direct investment and investor attraction – stock markets, were not developed and organized properly up until 1998, which was mainly due to outdated procedures left from USSR, absence of principles, methodology and understanding of how stock market can play huge role in expansion of economy and attraction of foreign investment. Nowadays, Azerbaijan has all possibilities to widen the stock market, enable easy way of increasing number of small businesses, startups and open the doors for them to global economy and lead to speedy expansion of the businesses. This research analyses the possible relationship between stock market development and economic growth, in order to predict possibility of positive impact of stock market on economic growth, overall social economic welfare of the country and business environment. For the purposes of the research, statistical figures of the country`s main economic indexes were collected: gross domestic product value, foreign direct investment value, stock market liquidity and turnover values, which were then analyzed and tested on various levels of cointegration test, Granger Causality test, vector error correction model and etc. All the analysis were done on statistical software Stata 11 based on figures of 1998-2016. The outcome of the Johansen-Julius shows existence of cointegration and by that VECM test proves relationship between stock market and economic growth in long run, while Wald Test confirms correction of this growth in short term by given explanatory variables. Hence, Granger causality test is conducted further, which determines bidirectional relationship between 3 variables: foreign direct investment, GDP and LIQ (stock market liquidity level). Based on the outcome of the analysis, study concludes that expansion of stock market and increase in foreign direct investment will have chain effect which leads to economic growth and social welfare in Azerbaijan.
